I'm a club player but my coach has gotten my racquet strung at 30 lbs. Now I understand why I don't get that 'feel' of the racket anymore + the frequent mishits ( more than when I was using 26 lbs) . Thanks a lot you guys! :)
A good way of testing if your tension is correct is clearance shots. If the tension is too high the shuttle will drop short and your feel liek you need to put more effort in than you should, same with too short where you feel you having to rain the effort in. Ive tested this with multiple people on a court with the same string and its a good indicator. The rest is feel, but its a great place to start and tweak instead of guessing.
I’ve been playing competitive, coaching and stringing racquets for over a decade now. And I think this is the only video where everything this man said was accurate. I kinda slightly have different ranges for beginner, intermediate and advanced player tensions tho. Also I 100% agree the higher tension thing amongst guys is a superiority complex I’ve seen players who mishit all the time ask for 28 or higher tension and I’m like if that’s what you want I’ll do it but I don’t recommend it.
Thank you very much for your kind words! What ranges would you suggest? As mentioned in the video it was only a rough guide and everyone has different opinions on whether they are 'beginner, intermediate or advanced"! Sounds like you're also on the same mission to get people to reduce their tension who don't need it as high 🤣 A lot of stringers will happily say nothing or even recommend higher tension as it will break quicker and they will get more business! I've just had a racket in from an intermediate player who knew nothing about string and they had aerosonic in their racket at 28lbs - they said that's what the stringer recommended! I'm putting a 0.70mm gauge in at 24lbs!
Badminton Insight I think it’s because we have different perceptions of what advanced players are. I think your definition of advanced is players who play nationals or higher level tournaments. My definition of advanced is anyone who trains and competes in tournaments. So my ranges are beginning 23lbs or less, intermediate 23-26lbs, advanced 27lbs+ which is roughly the same as yours. Also the part where you talked about higher tension smaller sweet spot I’ve been saying for years and almost no one says that. Most videos just say lower tension more power and higher tension more control which isn’t the full truth.
Yes completely agree with you! Those ranges are probably more accurate if you lower the standard of an ‘advanced player’ yes! That’s the main reason we made this video, because so many people don’t explain it well or are actually saying false information!
I agree, I've seen my friend who use 28+ lbs even though they are not play that well just because the stringer told them to. I'd say the standard tension would be 24lbs, and I recommend for beginner to use 24lbs if they are still in 20's of age. So their muscle and skills can develop, rather than the string tension follow the human skill and power. I myself after 14 years of absent and start playing again using 24lbs and after 5 years, now I gradually move to 27lbs.
@@hobikidalbadminton i had a friend who said higher string tension = harder smash lol. He rarely even hit the smash through to the other side of the court(and if he did, it sometimes would be an out).
BG66um (Black) mains 30lbs x Aerosonic crosses 33lbs is sweet :) stringing for 20 years now and best I’ve ever found for me :) try everything until you find your fit
And what if there is restriction of 28lbs on the racket. Still can we use 30lbs and 33lbs? I'm state champion and hard hitter. I'm going to buy Astrox 88 S Pro but still confused should i go for Astrox 88 S Pro or Z force 2
@@karnailsingh3005 although your racket wouldn’t be covered warranty wise if the frame was damaged due to higher than recommended tensions the frame will take the tension (unless it’s a basic racket!). Both the Astrox and Z Force will take that tension comfortably. Most Yonex rackets for example have 28lbs as the highest recommended however almost every player on the professional circuit will have exceeded this limit. As for which racket to go for, that’s all preference in terms of what balance and frame stiffness you like, if you have a chance to hit with them first that always helps.
I have seen advance club players who use the highest end racquets with thin strings strung at 30 lbs while hitting plastic shuttles. They don't seem to understand why they are snapping strings every few weeks & have tennis elbow. I suspect they are hitting the shuttle harder to try to make the shuttle travel farther & faster. My beginner friend tried 28 lbs while playing with an extra stiff racquet to hit feather shuttles; he hurt his shoulder.
At the clubs i play at, we all use bg 65 ti, I think its partly because we all use the same stringer, but personallly i think bg 65 ti is a really good training string as it lasts a long time, gives good power and great comtrol.
Thank you so much! We actually mention about grips in this video here - ruclips.net/video/F_-0pHH8mSI/видео.html The grommets is more for 'how to string a racket' which we'll definitely consider doing in the future 😊
I thought harder feeling strings control better than softer which repulse better. I had BG66 Ultimax 25lbs on my 3U LD Force. It feels slow, bouncy, soft and the shuttle "flies everywhere". Once I changed to BG80 30lbs, I felt much more control and shots are solid. I could do very good drops with it since.
It's no surprise that changing from 25lbs to 30lbs will have made a huge difference as this is a big change in tension! If you use BG66 Ultimax at 30lbs you will notice a huge difference and should feel slightly more control the BG80 at 30lbs. Of course this would be less durable! Again it is personal preference and what works for you 😊
This was really great guys!! Very informative :) I learned some new things about badminton strings including how often to get them restrung since before now I've just got them restrung whenever they break!
Quite interesting! Thank you for the video. A question for anyone...does temperature affect string tension? I played with my racquet yesterday (warm temperature ) and it felt great! I played with the same racquet this evening (cold temperature) and it felt like I was playing with a sledgehammer (really heavy and not as responsive)
You're very welcome 😃 Temperature can have a slightly impact on the strings yes! Maybe not so much the string tension, especially in a day. Strings often break when it is colder!

Great video! A question for you: with string choice, would you recommend biasing towards a player's strengths to enhance them or biasing towards their weaknesses to compensate for them? For example, if a player has good power but lacks feel around the net, would it be better to emphasise the power or lean more towards control to balance out their game?
Great question Max! We mentioned this a little in our 'how to choose a racket video' it really depends on your personal preference! We feel a lot of players like to hone in on their strengths and having a set up that suits them gives them more confidence!
Awesome video and answered pretty much everything I had in my mind, going up the strings from BG65 at 9.5kg(~21lbs) to Nanogy 99 at 10.5-11kg (~24 lbs). One question though: If I do break a string with a higher tension like this, how should I cut the strings off to release tension? I read a few things like cutting some crosses first, then mains then crosses and mains. Should I cut the racket in a particular spot on the racket like from the middle to the outer area, or something similar?
Thanks Jussi :) Don't worry too much about releasing the tension at 24lbs - the racket will be able to copy with this quite easily. Usually we would recommend starting from the middle and working outwards. We actually did a short 30 second video on our channel of a quick way to cut your strings out! Hope that helps. Good video and thank you. There are also VBS 69 nano and VBS 70 Power on the Victor range. Perhaps they are not available in Europe. It would be good to do a video on stringing pattern. For example Gosen, Yonex, Victor, Adidas etc so that players can verify if their rackets are strung correctly. 1 or 2 string patter, knot positions and how the knots should be tied to minimize tension loss. I have seen strings with knots buried in the grommet, twisted on the sides and not straightened to finish. Also perhaps do some reviews on the different types of shuttles (plastic, air, duck, goose, hybrid), differences between flight, trajectory, durability, when to use different speed (hot/cold climate, humidity, air thickness, sea level) and how to store feather shuttles.
Yonex Bg 65 Ti at 30 lbs and Yonex Bg 66 Ultimax at 26 main and 28 cross. I will try Yonex BG 80 or VBS 68 next time. Do you recommend specific tension for this 0.68 mm string gauge?
Hey guys, my name is Bennet and I am from Germany.😃👋 In the last year alone I broke two rackets and each time it was after hitting the shuttle and not a clash, hitting the ground or any collision of that sort. And before the breaking, my strings were always shifting while playing, deviating from a straight line more into the shape of a curve. Now I wonder wether it's just my bad technique, like slicing to much or something else, or wether my rackets might have been strung badly (wrong tention and/or gauge of the strings) for my level. They looked exactly like the broken racket Greg showed in the video. I never used to break rackets in the past and only did so after moving and having my rackets strung by a new shop. I would be extremely thankful if you guys could give me any tips as to why my rackets keep breaking and my strings aren't staying in place. Thank you and please keep up the amazing content you guys provide!👍
A common question I'm sure you get asked all the time but when someone asks you for a certain tension, how do you differentiate between mains/cross tensions? E.g. if a player asks for 25lbs do you do that racquet a) 25lbs mains and cross, b) 25 mains/27 cross (allowing for +2/10% on crosses), c) mains 23/crosses 25, d) mains 24/crosses 26? I realise that this now sounds like a quiz question haha!
Hi John, good question! I would usually ask if they would like 10% on the cross strings, if not (which most people would say) then I would just string 25lbs on the mains and crosses. Anything above 28lbs I would always do 10% higher on the crosses regardless if they wanted it or not. Unless they specifically said they didn't want it if that makes sense? So I would say a mixture of a and b! 😀 Hope that helps! Greg
I think thickness mainly means more resistance to abrasion whereas sticks snap from tensile strength. Shoutout to Ellis/Smith I see! Question: Does hard/soft correlate with repulsion at all? Great video- Hope to see more from you!
Strings may also snap before they wear out! Usually at a higher tension! We were mainly trying to reiterate the point with that example! Hard/Soft may correlate to repulsion yes! Usually most strings will indicate their feel and also their repulsion rating on the packaging. You can compare this to the others in their range to see what you like best! Thanks for the kind comment, we will try to keep producing videos alongside our training!
Hi greg this video was very informative and a quick question i am using bg 65 for 7 years and i never felt it lagged in control or power need some insights in it thanks a lot
Do the colour of the bg65 makes any difference ? If yes then how ? Which colour would you recommend ? I'm intermediate player . Plz suggest right tension too !!!
I love this video! I’m just wondering which string i should go with. I am looking for the most power, but i don’t want the string to be durable as well, if i could get a few options that would be amazing. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! You don't want to string to be durable? We're assuming you mean you do want the string to be durable. We would suggest either Victor VBS 68 or Yonex BG80 for you!

a beginner here (occasionaly still having hard time to timing my shots), can I use BG80 with 23lbs? or any suggestions? explaining in details (if you got the time) is welcome. Thank you in advance
Can you do a video on different miss hits? eg like when people hit the bottom of the racket near the knots and the knot comes undone for the cross because the mains broke
I had a question - if I am an intermediate player who would like to get his racquet strung to 24 lbs, does that mean I should do 25x23 (including pre-stretch), or 26x24 (including pre-stretch)? Thanks!
I'm using Apacs Z Ziggler (max tension is 38lbs) and My standard is above intermediate and I love to smash a lot. What STRING should I use and at what LBS?
I would recommend a string with a thickness greater than 0.70mm and also a tension no higher than 24lbs. Of course you can increase this if you want a better feel, however this will reduce the strings durability. As mentioned in the video, Victor VBS 70 or Yonex BG65ti would be good strings for you.
Greg and Jenny, thanks for the video, very useful and all your videos were great with full of badminton insights. is it possible to make a video to compare different tensions using the same racket and show us the difference while playing different badminton shots? (eg 22, 24, 26, 28, 30 lbs etc). saw a lot of videos and website talking about different tensions but never seen one showing what the shots like. it would be great if you could be the first to demonstrate.

Hi, I stumbled across your videos recently and have to say I am hooked. I love the way both of you present and explain your way through each video which is put together and edited brilliantly. It's not an easy skill but you have both nailed it on the production and delivery side. Quick question about string and tension advice, I would say I am an intermediate player and play 4/5 times a week with plastic shuttles (Yonex Mavic 600) and would like to ask what string you would recommend and at what tension. I am a bit of an all rounder but pretty much play at the back and would like to consistently smash with power and clear with distance both backhand and forehand - Thanks
@@BadmintonInsight Thanks would you have a racket recommendation to go with those specifics, I am currently using an Abroz Nano 9900 power strung at 25lbs?
I ordered a hybrid string called yonex aerobite boost, i just got to know that it will have a thicker and a thinner.. 1) what is the recommended tension for thicker and thinner? should i use the same tension 2) should i use thicker strings vertically and thinner strings horizontally?
There is no set recommended tension. It is common to have the cross (horizontal) strings 10% higher than the mains. Many people still have them the same tension though so don't get too hung up on that. The thicker strings should be the vertical strings as this is what usually breaks first. It should state this on the packet or reel. Hope that helps 😃
I use BG80 (yellow), interesting to hear different colours alter the feel of the string- what is the difference in how they play between the various colours?
In my experience I find the lighter colours don’t have much difference but the darker colours seem to feel more dull and thicker, but this is just my experience so I only buy white or light colours.
I'm currently using Aerobite boost, are considering should I try Bg brilliant or bg 80 power, may I know differences between three of those strings ? I'm playing on tension 28 and 29. Which would be better? Thank you very much for replying 🙏🏻

I'm a power smasher until 2010 after, I injured my shoulder for putting a lot of pressure into it.. But I can still smash a little. Anyway, my question is why isnt my string break over the years?

Thank you, very useful!
Glad it was helpful! 😄
Thanks for replying to every comment
We try our best! 😄
thanks for detailed description
Great Info. Please let me know, which strings and of what tension should I pair with Yonex Nanoray 70 ? it's 30lbs
Maybe try a few out to suit your playing style and ability and see how you get on!
What string and tension do you guys use in your rackets? Will you be making any changes after watching the video?
I use ashaway 66 fire but i might need to change to a slightly thicker string as i break loads!
I might try to increase my tension to get more control! Thanks for the very informative video 😀
@@harrypeters1341 Good idea! Let us know how it goes 💪🏼
@@fabricew3972 Thank you 😊
Yonex Bg 65 Ti at 30 lbs and Yonex Bg 66 Ultimax at 26 main and 28 cross.
Greg
can i ask..26 suitable for beginners? and string saiz which one? i hope you reply 😊
this helped me very much , thanks
Great to hear! ☺️
I using Yonex Aerobite boost with 28 pounds tension.. it gives me great feel & control.. durability is ok.. And great video as always..👍
Great choice 💪🏼 And thank you so much!
Love your channel so much
Thank you so much!
Great guide video Greg on strings and string tension🏸👌
Thanks! Keep going with it then unless you have the urge to try something else out 👍🏻
Do the colour of the bg65 makes any difference ? If yes then how ? Which colour would you recommend ? I'm intermediate player . Plz suggest right tension too !!!
Should I increase or decrease the tensions of i use plastic shuttles?
I love this video! I’m just wondering which string i should go with. I am looking for the most power, but i don’t want the string to be durable as well, if i could get a few options that would be amazing. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! You don't want to string to be durable? We're assuming you mean you do want the string to be durable. We would suggest either Victor VBS 68 or Yonex BG80 for you!
Badminton Insight Ah thanks. I did mean i wanted it durable, little typo there ahaha. I’ll go with the BG80. Thanks
I love BG80, but I break it after 1 or 2 training sessions even at 27 lbs. So, I'm using BG65.
Still a good choice of string :)
Please tell me that which string and which lbs tension should i equip on my Yonex Voltric 25i Raquet pls
Do string colors make a difference in their durability and why aren't any pros using black? More gear videos please :D
Very informative, thanks man!
Glad you enjoyed it & found it helpful! 👊🏼

Great information
I use BG80 power
Thank you! :)

Awesome video .. very informative 👍🏻👍🏻

Zymax 62fire, aerosonic, @ 22lbs or Li ning #1 and bg80 at 24lbs harbito style on any racket and hit the court happy
Lots of variety there! 😂 Do you have several different rackets with different strings, or do you just switch it up each time you break a string?
@@BadmintonInsight those are the common strings and average tension for my clients. 66Ultimax is also part of my top 5.
I currently using zymax 62 1st gen at 25lbs and sometimes Aerosonic at 26lbs. Usually I don't break strings but end up cutting them after a month since they feel dull.
I wish ashaway release the Rogue duo as separate strings because the cross strings are basically a modified zymax 62.
Hello there, What string do manufacturers normally use for carlton badminton rackets? I prefer thick string
Tq... Ive never heard about bg3
No problem! Yes it is not something you would every really request to have!
apacs Counter Attack (73G, 35LBS) White, Blue
Which string is the best and how much I want to keep the tension???
a beginner here (occasionaly still having hard time to timing my shots), can I use BG80 with 23lbs? or any suggestions? explaining in details (if you got the time) is welcome. Thank you in advance
In my country beginner as well as advance player use bg 65
A good string!
Can you do a video on different miss hits? eg like when people hit the bottom of the racket near the knots and the knot comes undone for the cross because the mains broke
Hello don't you think nano 98 is the best because it has more repulsion durability and control than most strings
well explained! Thank you!
best explaination so far 🏸🏸. can you recommend for intermediate player what string and tension should use for longer period. i play 1 time a week
Thank you 😃I would recommend around 24lbs with a gauge of 0.70mm so either Victor VBS-70 or Yonex BG65Ti. Hope that helps. All the best, Greg
@@BadmintonInsight thanks dude.
Amazing video you always explain stuff really well are you a professional badminton player
Thank you very much! I am yes 😄
Will you be competing in the next Olympics for England
Good information on the string.
Is it true that the darker colour in string weakens it?
Great content!
Thank you! :)
I had a question - if I am an intermediate player who would like to get his racquet strung to 24 lbs, does that mean I should do 25x23 (including pre-stretch), or 26x24 (including pre-stretch)? Thanks!
My racquet broke cuz it was a basic frame. It was strung at 26.Now I have to convince my parents to buy me a new racquet.
Haha Indian
Which string and tension should I choose I play daily and my racquet is YONEX ASTROX LIGHT 27i . Please Reply ✨
Another great video.
Thanks Tom! 😄
Where is nanogy 98? Can you have a brief on this string? And for an intermediate player, what tension should I go for? I'm trying on this string type
I'm using Apacs Z Ziggler (max tension is 38lbs) and My standard is above intermediate and I love to smash a lot. What STRING should I use and at what LBS?
Yonex BG 80 POWER with 28 lbs
Hi Jenny,
what kind of strings and the string tension do you use?
Thank You 😊
I use VBS-68 strung at 29lbs 😊
Thank you @@BadmintonInsight very helpful and stay healty 😊
I mostly play with plastic shuttlecock, so which string and tension would you reccomend .
Hello,
Thank you so much for the detailed explanations!
Does a higher tension string increase the power of the smash?
Yes only if you hit the sweetspot and you have a fast swing speed
Greg and Jenny, thanks for the video, very useful and all your videos were great with full of badminton insights. is it possible to make a video to compare different tensions using the same racket and show us the difference while playing different badminton shots? (eg 22, 24, 26, 28, 30 lbs etc). saw a lot of videos and website talking about different tensions but never seen one showing what the shots like. it would be great if you could be the first to demonstrate.
What should be the main and cross string tensions for hybrid strings?
Helpful video. Now i know how properly choose strings n tension... sort of..
Hi , i am a club player , playing 6 days in a week , my game style is attacking , i am currently playing with lining no.5 at 28lbs , i also used to play with lining no.1 but brakes lot specially in winter , as now in india it is cold , i am not satisfied 100% , should yonex strings are better , plz suggest me for much improvement to my game , which string I should use , what tension, same tension or main & cross different , and is any need to change string tension as we play with plastic shuttles ? i hope you will understand what I trying to say , main thing i want to tell you we are playing with plastic shuttles yonex mavis 350 , thanks 😊 waiting for reply bro ,
Try lowering the tension if you’re playing with plastic shuttles. We don’t really know that changing your string will benefit you too much
Some people insist that string colour makes a difference within the same model. What do you make of it?
Thanks a lot for your kind comment! We would recommend 20/22lbs and a durable string like victor vbs 70 or Yonex 65ti!
@@BadmintonInsight Thanks would you have a racket recommendation to go with those specifics, I am currently using an Abroz Nano 9900 power strung at 25lbs?
After all these years it's still BG80 for me.
Gotta be yellow though!
(I knew the colour difference wasn't just in my head!)
Hahaha!!
I ordered a hybrid string called yonex aerobite boost, i just got to know that it will have a thicker and a thinner..
1) what is the recommended tension for thicker and thinner? should i use the same tension
2) should i use thicker strings vertically and thinner strings horizontally?
There is no set recommended tension. It is common to have the cross (horizontal) strings 10% higher than the mains. Many people still have them the same tension though so don't get too hung up on that.
The thicker strings should be the vertical strings as this is what usually breaks first. It should state this on the packet or reel.
Hope that helps 😃
Insightful video
Thank you! 😁
I use BG80 (yellow), interesting to hear different colours alter the feel of the string- what is the difference in how they play between the various colours?
The BG80 yellow is a little rougher than the white which gives a little more 'bite'!
Sir I am a beginner and sir I am thinking to use Li Ning no.7. Is it good for me?
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥very helpful 👍👍👍
Glad you think so!
Do the colour of the bg65 makes any difference ? If yes then how ? Which colour would you recommend ? I'm intermediate player . Plz suggest right tension too !!!
Hay Greg have you ever tried to string a racquet with fishing line as they are much cheaper and have a wide range of diameters. Should I try it out?
Have u ever use Nanogy 99 and nanogy 98?
I'm struggling choosing between the two. Comparison between nanogy series with the legend string like bg66 ultimax might also be helpful. Thank you in advance!
Which type of gutting is better
2 knot gutting or
Four knot gutting
Please tell
I got my racket way back 2005 until now I haven't changed my string. I'm playing once a week for 6hrs. My racket tension is 28, but I forgot what string I'm using. I'm a power smasher until 2010 after, I injured my shoulder for putting a lot of pressure into it.. But I can still smash a little. Anyway, my question is why isnt my string break over the years?
Wow! You must have a very durable string at a low tension!!
