      @@cyberboy2749 look closely at the ssd screw in the video. You should remove it. Then you can close it about 95% and then with screws it becomes normal. If its not clear let me know.

    On my Steam Deck I installed the 2280 nvme on the outside. I bought an nvme extension from China. I tried on the inside, almost as you did, but the back cover woldnt fit, and the back buttons wouldnt work. Besides, the 2280 nvme gets very hot. Installing on the outside helped reducing internal temps. The downside is that I had to cut a small hole on the back for the extension to pass. But everything is working great.

    Just so that you know the hottest part of ssd drive is Controller chip. It is always near the connector. It means you wont damage your charging cable from heat.
    What you may damage with this mod is your wifi that is on the right from stock SSD. It is a very hot piece so covering it with ssd may result in it burning out. That is not a spoof. Wifi chips do burn on a chinese android TV boxes because they have no cooling there at all. So it is a real possibility. Be aware

  • @souleaverr
    @souleaverr Год назад +5

    Okay giving my two cents so far because ive just did this mod my self using gelid thermal pads and a samsung 980 ssd. At first glance i will admit this is not for the faint of heart and im on the fence on how i feel about this mod. First off in regards to the heat shield i bent the right portion to allow the ssd to stick out and i had to clip off the leg of the heat shield on the bottom right corner because it no longer would reach and got in the way of the case from closing more with a screw. I also clipped this as a safety aspect to keep the leg from being freely in the air to touch possibly other spots on the board. Now lets talk thermal pads on the heat shield i had to remove the the two small pieces on the bottom right side where the charging controller would be. I used some goo off to remove some kind of adhesice that had stuck to the metal shield after i removed the thermal pad. After it was cleaned i had to stack up some thermal pads on the charging controller and the chip next to it that were originally covered. I had stacked the pads high enough to be able to touch the underside of the ssd to help transfer the heat. I did not shave down the m.2 screw from looking at the incline of the ssd in the m.2 it never touched the screw if anything i moved the speaker cable around on the other side to help alleviate some of the pressure from ssd essentially resting on top of the entire plug. I placed an additional thermal pad on the bottom side of the ssd which i may remove im unsure. 1 thought was the thermal pad would help the cushion the pressure of the ssd essentially being sandwiched over the battery tray and help protect the cables that go over that battery tray lip and protect it from heat. 2nd thought is the heat transfer thought is stupid because thermal pads transfer heat and i may be better off removing that pad which would allow me a little more room but would allow rhe ssd to essentislly touch those cables thus risking the ssd possibly getting hot enough to melt them maybe im unsure this is uncharted territory. So now with all this sandwiches together and tightening screws down there is a buldge and the case did not want to close at the bottom however the screws pulled it together close not bad i might add but then again there is a buldge on the back. One thing i noticed was the steam decks display had backlight bleeding which on dark scenes there were spots in the bottom area and a spot at the top of the screen because of the pressure of the steam deck case being pulled together close with the screws. Adjusting bottom two screws near the center aka where the buldge is the darks went back to normal. Testing now on desktop ssd temp 40c . Steam deck on dock in sleep mode charging the ssd temp was around 32-35 c which isnt bad was wanting to account for the charging controller heat being put into the ssd in sleep which seems to transfer the heat wonderfully to the heat shield even though there is no thermal pad. Does seem samsungs marketing regardinf the thin metal piece that seems like a sticker on the top and the bottom do help transfer heat. K now real temp testing playing elden ring the ssd only warmed up to 44c and my cpu and GPU were normal or at least 1 or 2c cooler . Now on the charge gaming on the tv the ssd heated up to 47c and my cpu and gpu were warmer im assuming because now rhe charging controller is kicking in hot and heavy now but overall the battery temp was only 34c so it wasnt getting hot over all it seems decent. Honestly on the charge playing on the TV the temps were normal of what I'm used to seeing on my CPU and GPU so the SSD isn't adding any extra heat. The reason i chose the Samsung 980 was it has chips only on one side and the low power draw seems to almost compare to what was originally in there. So overall i now have a cheap ssd in my steam deck however there is allot of sketch going on because of rhe sandwiching the steam deck closed. The pressure on the speaker port and on the lip of the battery tray on the cables do worry along with the possibly lift pressure on the m.2 port because the end of it us being pushed down. Crazy enough and i hate to say it but i do hope the ssd ends up warping over that lip from the heat and pressure so the steam deck would close better and relieve pressure on other parts as it takes its new shape. The good side of that is it seems the main chips only reside at the very end and very front male end of the chip so the warping would occur in the large gap of the chip.
    Overall im happy and afraid of the uncharted waters i have just set sail in but so far seems good.
    Update:
    After 1 day of use pretty much played elden ring for about an hour then let it charge then after my break and it charged picked it back up and played for another hour. Mostly this was all testing. Back to more tinkering I took it back apart and removed the thermal pad I had underneath the SSD that cushioned it's pressure on the battery tray and up against the cables. I'll see how it goes from there. The only thermal pads I have are sitting over the charging controller and another chip right next to it that touch underneath the SSD. Other than that the SSD is just sitting there with good temps so the low power of the SSD is doing great. I have to admit this does look jank but Samsung does make a really good SSD and the 980 delivers in cooling it may not be as fast as a 970evo/pro counter parts but it certainly makes up in being crammed and sandwiches in a tight space. Heads up the SSD has picked up a warp however I'm not considering it a bad thing it is only bent over that middle portion where there is no chip overall its still doing good and fine. I'll keep everyone posted as I continue down this path. Overall I'm leaning more towards this is jank and it's not for the faint of heart by any means and there is certainly risk involved just to shove a cheap 40$ SSD vs 400$ system being broke possibly. I would say this mod is certainly for those that like to tinker and have some ability to repair or knows someone that can if things do go sideways. So with that I will not bash the author of this video because he did honor us with a video of what he did and it did give me an idea in my journey into the unknown however for a normal person they may would opt for just spending 100$ for a 1tb 2232 size or go with the external version of this mod.

      @souleaverr Год назад +2

      Update 2
      Been playing a bunch of elden ring on my TV docked so I could collect a good amount of data for thermals. Playing on everything high except shadows, effects and lighting are on medium.docked at full screen 1280x720; handheld is Windowed at 1152x648 ; same settings for both with FSR on and FSR sharpness at 3 through the steam deck performance menu. I also locked the fps to 30 which yielded a overall smoother game vs letting it bob so much and it also helps the thermals allot. Before unlocked fps my temps would try to creep to 90 but mostly stayed at the 87 unless I ran around allot in the open grassy areas it would teter close to 90 but still hold fast at 87. Overall the nvme hottest it got was 47c while docked and gaming on the TV wanted to see how much that charging controller was going to affect it because the thermal pads are touching the underside of the SSD however no I'll effects and overall I'm happy with this mod. It doesn't look pretty but hey I can't beat the results 40$ for a Samsung 980 and we are honestly doing really good. I'm happy and thank you for the mod also over time the case has came more closed better and less buldge because the SSD is warping to a bend. That sounds bad and rough but honestly at this point it is what I kind of want to happen. Less stress on the m.2 port and less over the items it's being suplexed over because it is no longer trying to fight back to stay straight. Overall I'm happy but do this mod at your own discretion. This is also with a regular stock backplate and just a grip case on my steamdeck no special jsaux stuff at all.

      I wonder why your SSD is bending. Did you not remove screw holder top

    • @souleaverr
      @souleaverr Год назад +1

      @@hte_tech wasn't anything really to remove unsure if my steamdeck is slightly different or not but my SSD never touched it. Near the battery is like a plastic tray that the battery is sitting in and the SSD is so long it is laying over the top of it. there is a ribbon cable that is going over the plastic tray lip as well so the SSD is laying over the top of it. However the SSD isn't touching the screw holder I promise on that but the sheer pressure from the case being closed just puts pressure on the SSD essentially pushing it over that battery tray lip causing it to bend but the buldge you were describing on the back of the case was going away over time as well I just associated the ssd bending over that lip causing it to take on a new shape was the reason it was going away. Over all the mod is still good
      I do remember a picture I believe some where in the comment section showing like the top of the screw mount had been shaved away couldn't seem to find that picture but for me the SSD never touched it. So I didn't mess with it also the Samsung 980 doesn't have any type of chips on the underside so there is space like you can see through the underside of the SSD as it's laying across. It only has two chips on the top one near the front and one all the way on the end. The middle area that's over the battery tray lip has nothing on that area thankfully so I don't see it doing any harm.

    I don't get why a company hasn't made a Steam Deck back cover that has an expanded slot with a cover to install a 2280 SSD that runs an extension from the back side of the cover into the M.2 slot. You would think it would be the perfect way to eliminate heat issues with this type of mod and it would give you tons of options for storage.
    I mean, this WORKS, but the thermals and power draw may be an issue long-term. I really don't get why a company hasn't made a back shell/cover with an M.2 slot and extension for this exact mod.
