Hey man, I really appreciate your tests. This convinced me to stay away from the 2280 upgrade. Sure, the temps aren't past the NVMe limits but over time? I don't want to fry one and re-set up everything. It takes forever when you're a detailed tech nerd 🧐

Doesn't work - Says that it's not compatible with the installed driver but it's the one from the steam deck page...

I just got a thinner nvme and it went in without modding the steamdeck at all. A full size 2280 and the deck closed, no modifications.

Steam deck windows 11 home install . Amd driver from steam resources gives me error 205. Anyone know how to fix this ?

These drives draw more power from the Ally. On device with less than an hour of battery life its not a good idea. Just stick to a 2230 drive. Trust me youre not going to play all of those games at once.

Tbh i think im fine with my 2tb 2230 ssd. Id rather not risk problems. Love the ally with all my heart, but i know it isnt perfect. If not for the battery, sd card slot, and 2230 size ssd limit then i think the ally would be perfect for my use case.

I don't get why a company hasn't made a Steam Deck back cover that has an expanded slot with a cover to install a 2280 SSD that runs an extension from the back side of the cover into the M.2 slot. You would think it would be the perfect way to eliminate heat issues with this type of mod and it would give you tons of options for storage. I mean, this WORKS, but the thermals and power draw may be an issue long-term. I really don't get why a company hasn't made a back shell/cover with an M.2 slot and extension for this exact mod.

Thank you for this update! Pretty much the only video I've seen actually testing the temps with one of these adapters in game. Just as a tip, it would probably be better to minimize the game while testing temps instead of closing it. You ran the test quickly after closing the games so it probably wouldnt have affected things much but keeping them open would be more accurate/representitive.

Just so that you know the hottest part of ssd drive is Controller chip. It is always near the connector. It means you wont damage your charging cable from heat. What you may damage with this mod is your wifi that is on the right from stock SSD. It is a very hot piece so covering it with ssd may result in it burning out. That is not a spoof. Wifi chips do burn on a chinese android TV boxes because they have no cooling there at all. So it is a real possibility. Be aware

My OCD is creeping up. The notch in the heat sink is for the screw hole on the drive. Not sure why you are putting it on upside down. Also, it would have been good to give the OEM SSD temps under the same loads as a baseline.
