Sad that the new owners do not fully appreciate the important history of this iconic establishment, but thankfully they have retained the name; Great post, as this History is vital.
Happy days. Chris Morris and I took a chance and travelled down to London from Birkenhead in summer 1959. Chris sang, and I played guitar in the resident band. Chris was "discovered" and became Lance Fortune. Another name to add to the list, Red Reece - a brilliant drummer.
What is not made clear is that there was a downstairs. A large room with a stage so packed with people when you went down, the air you breathed was wet. If one person danced everyone danced. There was a single stairway to get out, you would never get away with it today.
Please could somebody tell me who's singing the 'Soda Pop Pop' version on here, originally by Tommy Sands, please? And, is ' The Prettiest Girl in School ' the same person ? I see on this video's track listing they're missing from the running order. This is one of those occasional instances when for me the English version is far better, more rocking, and far more excitingly joyous than the American version. Longing to know the answer.
@@Geoff2446 Great. Thanks very much. I'll take it that it was the same person on both recordings. Very helpful indeed. I'll look to see if it was released as a single.

My mother used to talk about this place all the time. I was given some photos of her there which I cherish
All that is left is a plaque on the building where it used to be..
