    Who are these idiot trolls on here talking like this isn't good? This is brilliant! God forbid a comedian tell a joke that isn't a one-liner or full of cussing (don't get me wrong, I love George Carlin and Kat Williams, too), this is sophisticated comedy. I guess the short-attention span that's developed over the decades in our nation misses the comedic irony of the tale. Woody Allen always has been a genious. And he is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, even if the fools don't see it.

    • @betacall9634
      @betacall9634 6 лет назад +5

      Dracopol lol you got the punchline completely wrong. It’s “there’s a law in New York State against driving with two Jewish people on your fender, Tuesday’s, Thursday’s and ESPECIALLY Saturday.” It’s genius because Religious Jews are not allowed to drive on Saturday. That’s why you see the Orthodox walking on Saturday. You’re probably gentile (not Jewish) so no worries for not truly getting the genius behind the punchline. But there would be no law (Jewish Law or other against tying someone to a fender. But it would be morally wrong lol:)))

    • @garydryfoos7275
      @garydryfoos7275 6 лет назад +1

      That's really the high point of the story. Was he afraid that the English wouldn't know enough Jews to get the "Saturday"?

    • @betacall9634
      @betacall9634 6 лет назад +6

      Exactly Gary. I’m too tired to watch this video now but if my memory is correct at the end of the bit he changes it from the original “and the joke is on them, cuz it’s restricted” to “and the joke is on them, cuz they don’t allow Jews”. Because this was England, Woody was afraid they wouldn’t get what “restricted” meant in reference to being a member of the NY Athletic Club. So he literally had to spell it out to the audience that they don’t allow Jews, and not just say it was “restricted”. But most everyone in the 1960’s in America knew what restricted meant as it related to Jews not being allowed to join certain country clubs. That’s why the Catskills was created. A place for Jews to play golf, dine, and use the country club pool like the rich Wasps of that era.
      Update: just watched video. He even changed that line from NY Athletic Club to NY Golf Course since he didn’t need to reference it as a private club anymore since he didn’t use the word restricted and simply said they don’t allow Jews.
      p.s. if you just RUclips the moose woody Allen and listen to the original (audio only) version of this bit it’s so much funnier. He even says the moose mingled (at the party). Did very well. Scored. He says it differently here after going to the buffet table. It’s way scaled down to make sure they got his style of humor.

    • @Mr.Monta77
      @Mr.Monta77 2 года назад

      @@pappy374 It depends om your definition. Your description of Allen as the ‘greatest’ is purely subjective and unimaginative. Undoubtfully Allem was and is a very talented comic writer and performer. But your use of ‘genius’ in this context shows a very cavalier attitude. If Allen is a genius, what are Bergmann, Tarkovsky, Chaplin, and all the other remarkably talented performers in the history of stage and screen? And what about Mozart, Shakespeare, Ibsen, Sophocles, Moliere and all the other incredibly gifted men from history? What about Margot Fonteyn, Maria Callas, Mitsuko Uchida? These are all artist overflowing with profound depth and range. Do you really understand what these artist represent? I would personally not use the term so casually, and convinced that Allen himself would revolt against the label ‘genius’. He is a great comedian and a very productive writer, actor and director. Isn’t that enough?

    • @pappy374
      @pappy374 2 года назад

      @@Mr.Monta77 I neither described him as "the greatest" nor as a "genius". As for the people that you listed, have any of them been considered amongst the very best in four distinct fields of work, as Allen has? A genius is simply someone who displays exceptional skill in a given field, which wholly applies to Allen, and in fact applies in four distinct fields.
      You are aware that genius is not a finite resource, correct? That is to say that because the people you listed are geniuses that another person cannot be one also. There are many, many geniuses out there and I do not use the term flippantly.

    • @Mr.Monta77
      @Mr.Monta77 2 года назад

      @@pappy374 My 96-year old aunt says Woody Allen is a genius jazz musician, and a genius VW Beetle driver and a genius whatever, and therefore he is Universal Genius! That people make such claims flippantly (as you indeed do), is not a verification. It simply means that the term genius has lost much of it’s traditional strength due to inflation, just like your argument demonstrates.
      I have always enjoyed Woody Allen’s performances over the years, and clearly the man is an excellent generalist, and indeed a very hard worker. He deserves the praise as a great artist. Is he a genius? If you think so, please do. I suspect Allen would think you are rather ignorant but that’s another story.

Meanwhile they tell him that they're going to pick up the GRAND DRAGON, and he figures, "okay, deep South, white sheets, grand dragon...only one conclusion...they're picking some guy dressed as a dragon..."
