  • Hey Fellow Vanagon addict's
Today you'll see me tackle the seemly daunting task of removing PISTON'S from your Waterboxer Engine. I have watching countless hours on #youtube about the process and I've notice a few things. Most videos are over 8 Years old . The quality of the footage isn't great . The removal process isn't really broken down in frames or steps . One moment the piston is in the block and the next its out... This is my take are the removal and in real time !
One thing is for sure there are many ways to do this job and I feel I stumbled on the fastest way to remove your Piston's without using a torch , slide hammer, dental pick , vise grips or needle nose pliers .
    Check it out !

@@WeRoamtheUnknown Thanks, but take a bow yourself. Your production quality is light years beyond mine. Best of luck with the project. I've been tinkering with a much-rattier 1984 1.9L Vanagon for about a year now and just haven't had the time to make any progress. Mine seems to need pretty much everything except engine internals.
Can't wait to see how this revival turns out! Best of luck with the project. Count me in as a regular viewer.

Great video! I’m in the middle of a tear down and was wondering what size bolt did you use for the wrist pins?

Hey ! That’s awesome! I’m glad you like the content! I know this was probably a little outside of the box thinking but it did work! I’ll have to go back and see what kinda all thread it was , maybe 8mm ?

Thank you ! That’s the goal , owning a VW isn’t for someone that doesn’t want to get dirt underneath their nails . They break down even after all the new parts 😅 . You just need to understand how things come together and diagnose it yourself or a shop is going to charge you hundreds of dollars for a 20 dollar fix . Good luck on your adventures!

With wood as a brace its likely you did damage to the connection rod or the rod bearing. Why everyone things they are a VW mechanic is amazing....
Go screw up a chevy, but keep you hands off VW's

Personally, I’m a Ford guy so I wouldn’t “ go screw up a Chevy “ . These Waterboxers are very simple engines and I’m a former Mercedes Benz technician/ ASE Master technician. I’ve built many engines in my career. I’m documenting my experience being completely new to the VW Vanagon community. For the most part everyone has been super kind and helpful. I know I’ll get a few trolls because the internet is full of them 👀 . The Bentley calls for a similar method I just couldn’t find the factory specific tools so I made them up but more experienced VW guys use slide hammers to pull the wrist pin out . Seems a bit violent to me but it works . The wooden block keeps the connecting rod from flexing while the wrist pin is being pulled . Again this is my first waterboxer build but not my first rodeo 🤙🏻. You can keep watching to see if I did in fact screw up or not BUT thanks for the view otherwise.
