Rail Departure Times Created With Lasers

- Aldrington station - down on the south coast near Brighton - has got looong paths from the street entrance up to platforms where the Dot Matrix Indicators are. Wouldn't it be handy to have some down at street level? Yes it would, which is why I teamed up with Laserist Seb Lee-Delisle to create a Rail Depature Board ... with lasers!

How does he have so much original content, always new and amazing 👏
Because few others do it.
I cycle through that tunnel every day on my way to work at the local hospital. Great to hear the story behind the bricks and the NHS rainbow
Trains + Laser Geek + Raspberry Pi + Street Artist = Once of the coolest videos ever. 🤩
Blown away by this video, one of the most surprising items that I have ever seen on RUclips. 3 wonderful inspiring people collaborating on something creative and imaginative, thank you and well done guys. I had a discouraging and somewhat scary day yesterday dealing with individuals who have been traumatized by recent events, watching this film restored my hope and confidence for the future of the community.
thanks Elizabeth, keep going! there is plenty of good in the world with fun & creativity to be had. :-D
@@geofftech2 Your kindness is much appreciated. This week has turned out to be the toughest week so far in the pandemic crisis for me personally. Don't underestimate how much your channel is helping people to navigate a very turbulent 2020, both in the practical travel sense, but also in the caring community sense.
you're very kind, thank you! plenty of good wholesome educational and fun and informative content on RUclips to digest ... just watch those channels, and all is good in the world!!
@@geofftech2 I have been very grateful for RUclips during lockdown, it has been a valuable resource that made life easier than it would have been otherwise. But tonight RUclips will have competition, Crystal Palace are back in action (at Bournemouth) lol ! There is an item that I wanted to mention to you about train services, if you're looking for ideas for content this summer. I got an email from Thameslink referring to a Selhurst triangle bottleneck inquiry, which I have been told by a fellow Crystal Palace fan is something to do with a railway bridge. Rather confused by this, perhaps you know more detail about it? If you're wondering why I am fascinated by trains, it comes from my childhood roots, both my grandfathers were engine drivers on what is now ECML, back in the days of steam, they used to wear those dark blue caps with the British Rail logo on the front. Their home depot was Whitemoor near March.
@@ann_onn Thank you for this detailed information, I had no idea that this project was so big. I am interested in this because although I'm not a London resident, I visit Selhurst and East Croydon stations several times a year because of football matches and meeting family members.
Hi Geoff. Being a Train's and Laser nerd my self this and Seb's video of this collaboration was so entertaining to watch.
Seb has done some awesome things with lasers. He has also had a go of playing a few tune's on my laser harp at the annual UK laser enthusiast group meeting in South Lincolnshire a couple of year's ago.
I get strong "Hove, actually" vibes from that guy lol
How about Portslade unfortunately
Awesome. also, so cool that the local artist was there. Don't you love the way the Universe sometimes aligns?
araneus1 YES! ⬆️👍
Geoff just called him.
@@dickmartino9933 ha ha - someone clearly didn't watch Seb's version of the video! :-D
The passion you have for this is so delightful. Thank you from Australia
Anytime I watch one of the 'complimentary videos' from the 'secondary YT participant' it always reveals so much cool BEHIND THE SCENES footage that dosent make Geoff's "refined"/pro-cut.
Makes me think: "GEOFF!? WHERES YOUR '2ND CHANNEL?!?"
A lot of prominent YTers have one, and your personality is PRIME for it, "MORE GEOFF MARSHALL" with EXTRA [ROUGH CUT] scenes, even HODGE-PODGED would be such a DELIGHT.
You have the extra footage stock anyways!! Little effort, but would be a great treat/pet project and oh so JUICY for us GeoffTech nerdophiles/extra-thusiasts.
ALWAYS A GENIUS TIME MAN!
🤓😎🧐👨💻🚉😻🇨🇦💞🏴💯
ah, thank you. you're very kind! sometimes i consider doing a Patreon, and having "behind the scenes" and longer rough cuts on there. but i am never sure if people would want that or not.
1:17 I even like the opening titles ! Well done Geoff
OMG I love Seb, he’s so talented.
So you're asking us to... Seb-scribe?
Wow 4am morning job! Respect to this guy doing the artwork. Makes a very dingey looking station brighten up absolute repsect :D
Very clever lazers! And the art is so vibrant, just lovely. x
Loved the tunnel looks great. The laser information was interesting and so simple to follow! Guess it's only useful when it's dark. Seb is doing some very interesting lasering.
All very complicated, but still a very enjoyable watch
Amazing content as usual. I am blown away by Seb and his magic... but the painter stole the show in the end. Awesome video.
Brilliant idea with this laser.
Awesome stuff G and S !!! Loved the smoke addition and especially the bonus artist who painted the tunnel etc... brilliant!
LASER TRAIN TIMES wow what a name your a genius geoff 😁
briitish rail should try it.
@@SamSitar Well, err, yes, if Seb could go back in time about 30 years.
That just blew my mind. Amazing and very clever.
I love the coast, the seaside...the crashing of the waves on the seashore...!!! 🌊🙂
Hey anton!
This is fantastic. I love all of it. And BTW, the train operators could be interested in that laser signage system for temporary solutions and whatnot. It needs to be brought to their attention.
@@ann_onn Ad-hoc situations happen at night.
This is genius...I'm not gonna pretend I understand all of it...but it's bloody genius!
A very cool collaboration! I love it when channels cross over and merge content! Thank you both for your hard work, Seb and Geoff!
Brilliant! You sure meet some interesting people.
That would be cool to put at stations. That was super interesting to watch and learn about. Lasers and trains 😁
Seb featured on a BBC Click episode a few weeks ago, talking about his project letting the public take control of his lasers (gulp!). Also talked about having to get CAA permits etc, for his Brighton display.
Geoff has great people skills with the folks he always collaborates with. I’ve often passed that station en route to Worthing, but never alighted. Cool video as per normal Geoff.
This is absolutely gorgeous. Great idea. Also the artwort: wonderful! Big thumbs up for that (too).
Post-Lockdown this will bring hordes of tourists. How to turn a negative space into something so positive. Geoff, you've done it again.
This is amazing. My biological father did laser shows back in the early 70s. He did a big one as a part of a team for the opening of the 72 Olympics. They were supposed to do one for the closing as well, but obvs that didn't happen.
Isobella Brett cool! I was writing code to draw text by laser about that same time (1973). I used it to produce my PhD dissertation, which was probably one of the first laser-printed books.
Seb has my sub, his way of talking and explaining is so relaxing
Seb’s laser stuff was incredible!
2 nerds talking about trains, codes and lazers. My kind of quality content 👌
Cool to see you both guys meeting. I'm a long time subscriber to Seb's channel, being myself a laser buff too... fell in the "Wicked Lasers" - an high power laser brand - rabbit hole quite a long time ago. It fits perfectly with my electronic music and synths projects...
This is absolutely amazing! A brilliant but complicated job by Seb the Lazer Guy! This needs to be done somewhere like Shippea Hill or Coombe Junction Halt, in the middle of nowhere, now that would be cool! Who agrees?
Now that is pretty cool. All stations should do this.
Two thumbs up, one for the laser and another for the street art!
That was brilliant!
That was sooooo awesome, it’s a shame not many station users would be able to see it :(
I'm sorry, WHAT? I can't deal with how cool this is!
When you see the destination on the DMI is your hometown (where I grew-up!)
Littlehampton? I live here now 😂
Mine kept getting cut out xD
Burgess Hill *just* slipped in
AbsoluteTV you are joking I’m literally about to change there 😂😂😂
I remember (!!) Genesis & Led Zeppelin experimenting with lasers at concerts in the mid 70s...... Especially with the smoke towards the end, boy did it bring back memories!!
Mind you, back then, a generator or two for power, no computers.... tech has come a long way!!!
Tx - enjoyed that!!!!
Saw ELO use them in 1978.
@@Elitist20 Yup - but Genesis, Zep & the Who were the first & the prime movers
@@ann_onn Ah - I have to confess that I didn't get Floyd back then (since corrected!), so am not qualified to comment,, but it certainly would be logical!!! I'll remember in future.....
@@ann_onn I shall go seek - tx for that!!!
Wow! That tunnel/underpass is amazing. Credit to the bloke. I didn't catch his name but it makes a refreshing change from the usual graffiti vandals. Give that man a medal :-)
Very cool/nerdy using a Raspberry Pi and pulling data via phone. Using good old C++ Well done
This is amazing
Ladies and Gentleman: Laser-Seb!
brilliant nerdy stuff - I really enjoyed that.
Where they fitted in 2018-2019 when GTR put all those black boards at the stations
This is so awesome.
Wicked stuff, well done to all.......
Great video Geoff, that was really interesting, I really enjoy it.
I bet this laser would make an epic proposal.
I hope I gave someone an idea. If you do that, please film it!
When I visited Britain I thought that far too many house facades, office building facades, railways station walls, hospital walls parks walls and bridges have far too many dark bricks, never painted or coloured, probably for tradition and habit, which gloom the general atmosphere of many streets and urban public spaces.
The Gentleman at 8:34 has the potential to start an urban design revolution in British cities.
Interesting video, it also looked really cool.
So cool
I don't know if you follow Techmoan, but you should watch his 'Abandoned Railway Carts ' ;)

What a great application of laser technology and the feed from UK Departure Boards, and the need is clearly there. Railtrack *(IS it* still Railtrack? I moved from Britain back in '99...) plus the train operators should be pounding on Seb's door trying to push scads of cash at him. So, just how long *was* the video up before they started with the 'Cease & Desist' letters from their legal departments, I wonder?!
You two should go to someone at the main office and demonstrate this. Would have many applications besides the one shown here.
Ha ha - those lasers are way cool! 👍🏻
*in bill nye opening voice* Seb ly the laser guy
Love the colorful tunnel! Could the laser departure board be a thing of the future for railway stations?
Fantastic!
Excellent.......Said in a Mr Burns voice.
That was awesome. Next time when there is big trouble on the trains at Brighton put the detail on that tall building!!!
Just gonna leave this here... ruclips.net/video/ijuQTgCIPfU/видео.html
Hey, I think that station entrance might be the perfect place for Russell to put one of his rail departure boards.
Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop in Manchester is similarly long! If you realise that your tram is the one you're seeing as you climb the stairs, you've missed it!
Having a bad day? Just watch Geoff’s videos. They’re nerdy, factual and wholesome af.
Classic Geoff always sitting on the floor :-)
wow i would love the sun being up until 10 pm in the summer, only until 830 max or so where i live in the US.
Great video Geoff and very interesting.
Its like tech stuff to launch a space rocket...fantastic
So good
That was awesome well done to u and seb
I didn't understand a word but enjoyed it anyway!
wow he coded it in C++ . that was the first language i used back when i first went into programming when i wast in my early teens
That is so cool
Great video again it must take ages so many angels and walk past camera real pro....
That was so COOL. I hope they are looking at that. The railway company that is. How cheap if put up high less vandleproof. My be.
This is so cool 👍
Superb! Fun video! 👍
Weird to see my old home town of Goring-by-sea in laser. Oh I miss eccentric Britain sometimes.
This lasers are very interesing and amazing
Oh neat! I go under that tunnel all of the time.
Amazing as usual
Excellent! Clever clogs :-)
Amazing Geoff
Very cool
Hella Nerdy. Excellent.
Seriously I live near Barnham, and currently I commute all the way up to st albans station and I’m still yet to see Geoff 😩😩
Perhaps Geoff is just a holographic laser image?
Very nice Geoff
Would this be cheaper than a dot-matrix? They could permanently install one on the lamp post there, if it's cheaper it could be used in loads of places.
I had an idea, once, a long time ago, for something similar on the Subway, though it was projecting the information across to the far side of the tracks (far wall for underground island platforms, a metal plate for underground side platforms, the express track sides of island platforms and all above ground platforms.
Awesome video
I would like to see a version of this at the train doors onto the platform surface when the doors are open. Sometimes it is so difficult to spot the platform display/monitor/carriage display near the door you want to board at. Some platforms host trains to multiple locations and when you often have to board to hear or see where it’s going you risk going to wrong place/in wrong direction or missing it because you’re waiting for the info to scroll along the platform displays. Some stations are the worst for every single destination board simultaneously displaying trivial information about weather or engineering works when you’re desperate to know if the train at the platform is going your way! It would be great to see the destination(s) underneath the open doors at the edge of the platform as the train sits there. In general we’ve to stay behind the yellow line so there is a space to project onto. Can someone like Geoff pick this up and run with it? Seems feasible to project from step area and possible after watching this video about using laser projection.
Can we have sharks with the lasers?
