Just wish Doctors would admit that athletes and older people do have higher BP than normal. At 61 I do not eat sugar or any processed foods nor alcohol or cigarettes, and I workout 7 hours a week and regular sauna and my BP is 143/83 and am told that is hypertension.

I had stage 2 hypertension just 6 months ago with my bp usually around 158/95. M 5'11 weighed 265lbs 35 years old. I read that the DASH diet was proven to be just as effective as bp medicine. I started it with exercise. Within 2 months my bp went back to normal and now I'm always 120/80 or less. Now after 6 months I weigh 200lbs and it's still falling off. So happy and I feel soooo much better. Have been losing about 10lbs a month.

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, and I noticed that the gluten free foods were really bad. So I checked the American Heart association for minimum sodium levels, and combined a Dash/Celiac/ No added sugar diet and what I noticed is that you can't eat processed foods and be on the diet. So I cut them out with few exceptions. I don't count calories, and only limit certain foods (veggies that grow below ground) and have a lot of foods where I eat as much as I want. I allow myself a loaf of gluten free bread about every three or four months. With that, the good stuff just happens by itself.

Well done. I'd kill for regular 120/80 readings and I know how hard it can be to lose weight. 10lbs a month is excellent, not too quick to be counter-productive but enough to keep you motivated. But as long as it's going down even slowly, keep at it. Another 20lbs or so (maybe 2 months) and you'll be in the healthy BMI category, a good indicator for overall health.

Salt itself is NOT the problem. It's the balance between sodium and potassium. Most people have a potassium deficiency which throws the balance off. I exercise regularly and kept my weight down, but couldn't get my BP down from 140-145/80-85. Four years ago I started to add 1/2 teaspoon of "NoSalt" (potassium chloride) to my meals. Within a couple of months I was down to 100-120/60-65. I've been in that range now for almost four years. (I'm 74 years old, continue to exercise regularly doing 11 miles five days a week on the recumbent bike and some upper body weight training.)

It's not just that. Whenever you have elevated insulin levels, you will retain more salt that you would normally.
So, normally, salt would be regularly entering and exiting your body resulting in balanced salt levels.
However, people who live in ways that result in chronic elevated insulin will create chronic salt retention which is an imbalance.
This is just another way to strengthen your point that salt consumption isn't the issue.

Yes, correct. Not enough potassium to balance the sodium.
Google "sodium mortality curve". The curve shows that reducing and reducing sodium is NOT the answer.
Table salt is 40 weight% sodium, 60 weight % chloride.
5-8 grams table salt per day is perfectly fine, but get it from natural, unprocessed salt. Redmond, Himalaya or ("Keltic") sea salt.
Not bleached, no additives that keep it dry or flee flowing.
Processed food is like junk food, it has the wrong table salt. loads of sugars, refined carbs, sweeteners, vegetable oils (an entire subject in itself!), emulgators, colorants and God knows what more chemicals)..

I felt compelled to share that a key part of the original DASH diet by Appel et al in 1997 included nearly 3 servings of dairy foods, specifically milk, cheese, and yogurt daily. There were 3 arms to the study and the true "DASH" arm which showed the greatest reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure was the diet that included not only 8-9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, but also an average of 3 servings of dairy foods per day. Proper nutrition is amazing for the human body! Thanks for all your work!

a few years back when i went back to drinking coffee in the morning exercising later in the day my blood pressure stopped spiking like crazy. i workout and exercise at least 2 hours a day, trying not to overeat. i think my main problem was NOT eating enough salt and sugar to replenish after my workouts. i've learned to intake a lot of water, salt, and sugar after exercise/sweating to replenish. just because it's cold outside doesn't mean you aren't sweating outdoors and we lose a lot of salt from sweat. i've learned through the years anxiety attacks can be cured with a pinch of salt. i replaced side dishes such as mac n cheese, french fries, tater tots, with things like cereal. eat less and less as the day comes to an end. the later it is eat the fewer things i eat with carbs. more fruits and veggies. i think it's a pretty good balance.

At 29 I was put on lisinopril 10 mg than by 35 it was 20 mg twice a day by 2020 (Aged 40) I was told to try a more stronger blood pressure medication but managed through diet changes to get it down to 20mg a day again. Than in Dec 2023 (6-1, 172, 43 to give perspective on my body built) I decided to look into adding EVOO into everything I make, ironically only because of IBS not because of blood pressure. " I even take one tablespoon by mouth every morning as well, did that the last 365 plus days". I have not touched my blood pressure medication since Fed 2024. My most recent (Dec 24) VA doctors (6-1, 179, 44) visit was the 20th of this month and it was 112 over 74. My doctor said my medication was working well, until I told her I stopped taking it over 10 months ago. She was shocked and I have been as well. I cant say 100% it was the EVOO but its the only major diet change I have done. My total Cholesterol dropped from 165 (Tested Dec 2023) to 146 (Tested 12th Dec 24)// My HDL went up from 46 (Dec 23) to 57 (Dec 24)// My LDL direct went from 75 to 65. Than my Triglycerides went from 239 (Dec 2023) to 139 (Dec 2024). Lowering of my bad Cholesterol seems to be the other shocker, which EVOO is known to do. EVOO replaces bad cholesterol with good. So maybe that is my link to not having to take my blood pressure medication anymore. They always say the Mediterranean diet is healthy but maybe its just EVOO. Than again everyone is different but this is what helps me, apparently.

I only do hiking and biking, often in mountains. My BP is often 10+ points lower after a 1 or 2 hour workout. But like salt this seems to be transient. Have to do it every day to sustain the good numbers. A couple days off and my BP gets into stage 1 and stays there. Luckily I just retired and in last month I did 35 hours of cardio, a level I have not achieved in 7 years due to work. Cardio doc wants me on beta blocker, which sucks, motivates me to work out more.

Sodium is one of the most precisely regulated electrolytes in the body, second only to potassium. Interestingly, glucose-a highly osmotic molecule-competes with sodium and other electrolytes. Limiting sodium intake can inadvertently restrict other vital electrolytes like potassium, magnesium, iodine, copper, zinc, and selenium. Your approach essentially prioritizes accommodating high carbohydrate consumption over natural physiological balance. Instead, reducing unnatural carbohydrate intake allows the body to regulate electrolytes as it has done since the dawn of time, often leading to a spectacular drop in blood pressure.

My personal recommendation when people have high blood pressure is to have a blood panel done to make sure that their sodium levels are actually elevated. The first time a doctor gave me blood pressure medication, I started having severe memory problems within a few days because I don't really consume that much sodium to begin with.
The main reason to cut back on sodium is that if you look at the foods with the most sodium in standard American diet, they're all crammed full of salt, fat, sugar, and a bunch of other stuff that's generally bad for the cardiovascular system.
That being said, there's nothing inherently wrong with cutting back a bit on the salt to see if it has an impact. But, I think the assumption that everybody is consuming dangerous amounts of salt when there's all these other dietary factors that are known to be related to cardiovascular disease and found in the same dishes is kind of a stretch. For some people sodium does seem to be a problem, but it's overstated.

Another thing to add to the list is breathing exercises like 4-7-8. I can get my blood pressure to drop 20 points or more if it is up due to stress. Also anyone diagnosed by a doctor with high BP should be checking at home multiple times per day with a quality monitor. Many people have "white coat" syndrome with high BP in the doctor's office but acceptable at home when relaxed.

'Insulin resistance ' causes hypertension . High carb diets increase blood glucose that 'hyperinsulinemia' then normalises .....IR ,then , results . Weaning off non-essential carbs (especially processed carbs) lowers blood glucose and elevated insulin levels .Normal insulin levels means less Insulin Resistance , which allows blood vessel elasticity (and blood pressure) to return . Note ; medication for BP should be adjusted accordingly when going low carb for high bp.

Restaurant food and “take-out” tend to be higher in sodium. Still, you can choose carefully, put away the salt shaker, and eat fruits and vegetables to increase potassium.

As far as I understand, there is no need to drastically reduce table salt, if you are making food by yourself from real and fresh ingredients. Not having salt might be even bad for you. The most important is to have enough potassium and magnesium, so that the balance of Na/K/Mg is kept optimal. Avoiding sugars and sweetened drinks would do the rest. Concerning exercises - during physical stress, your blood pressure goes up, so if you suffer from arterial hypertension, be careful to choose - what kind of exercises you are starting.

You only need 400 to 500 mg of sodium/day to survive. Most people are consuming way over the suggested DASH diet of 1500 mg to 2,000/ a day. She's talking about excessive salt. I am off blood pressure medicine for the first time in 8 years after watching a video on Chef AJ's channel with a leading blood pressure specialist... Who promotes the DASH diet. I lowered my blood pressure from 170/101 to 120/80 in 5 weeks by lowering my sodium. The days I have high sodium my blood pressure goes right back up. Most people have no idea how much sodium they're consuming.

If you reduce your fructose intake you may see a large drop in blood pressure, especially if you link it to a reduction in sodium intake. The results are complicated but everyone should see a benefit and some people could see a huge benefit.
Keeping well hydrated also leads to a reduction in blood pressure.

A low carb diet is better than the dash diet when it comes to lowering blood pressure. This is because a low carb diet lowers insulin. Lowering insulin lowers sodium retention. (From memory I think this has something to do with the renin-angiotensin system). Conversely if you lower salt intake the body will raise insulin (to increase salt retention). Low carb diets have issues such as lowering testosterone and may not be good for thyroid hormones but if lowering blood pressure is the goal, low carb is the best way to go.
