Very nice video Fred! I very interested on the Loop antenna that came by in the video, on topic: I've got the firmware on a Quansheng uv-5r plus (latest model) that has a nice blue display, work exactly the same, all these boards are the same, allthoug the Q uv-5r plus does not have a usb C port, 73 Geurt, PD4GB /19CT032
Just purchased one of these radios during the Prime Days sale event in the states. Have been bing watching your videos to learn about it and the various mods, it's been very helpful. So far, I've been successfully flashing the different firmwares available (Egzumer, IJV, and F4HWN) back and forth to make a decision on which one to choose, and finally made a decision to go with the F4HWN improved variant of Egzummer.
I tried egzumer on the Quansheng version of your Retevis handheld. V0.21 kept locking up the radio after 1 minute of it being turned on, so installed the stable V0.19. Works a treat. Very happy with the £12 cost of the radio plus £3 for the lead.
If you try 0.21 again, try this. Go in-to the extra, hidden menu section, by holding both PTT + Function button 1 at the same time, while switching the radio on. It'll say 'releases keys' let go, It will take you right into the menu, press A up arrow once, you should see menu 69.69 Reset VFO choose All & M(a) key to say yes to reset. Then once the radio re-boots it should behave correctly. 19 has a lot of the UN-fixed bugs, one of witch is garbage data is written to the eeprom, no agc, am fix either on v19
Thank you for this Fred! The quick “tutorial” on how to flash will push me to do my Quansheng UV-K6. I’ve been watching you for years from Chicago. Keep up the great work. I really enjoy your content.
For the price point, I bought 2 and have been experimenting with different software/firmware. Just wanted to raise the point that I had a lot of trouble getting my laptop to communicate. If anyone else has this problem, it turned out to be the drivers for the USB port on the laptop. Nice one yet again "old" fred!! 👍👍
Great wee radios i flashed the v02.1 on to the UV-K5 and used the 27mhz usb receive on it to check the frequency coverage on an old vintage ham international concorde 2 all you have on they old radios is a display of 73 and 81 etc 10kc jump switch and you realy have to work the kc shift and clarafier to get on the zeros .Then listned to some 2 meter repeaters and planes landing defo alot of bang for ure buck .
Once you are in Spectrum, squelch bar goes down press F, and goes Up press “scan” (the two buttons below and above the 0). Then, if a super strong frequency in Spectrum capitalizes the frequencies, preventing other signals to show up - press the tiny button below the PTT (the 1st, not the one below it], it will mute the frequency at hand that pierces the squelch. You can mute up to 8 parasite frequencies. If you like the frequency you hear on the spectrum and don’t want it to be replaced by another frequency that hits the squelch, then press PTT - it will send you to another screen with only this frequency where you can choose a few options such as signal strength, modulation, etc. In this mode and in spectrum mode - press 0 to toggle all modulation modes. Press “exit”(or was it escape) to go back to previous screen. In this screen you can also press 5 to choose another frequency. When on the normal screen you can press the tiny button under the PTT to open squelch, then it’s fun to hold the up or down buttons and Lear “analogue -like” sliding through the frequencies when in a small step setting, can detect weaker signals like this. Do not forget for clear aviation radio sound to go to menu and choose “fix AM”. It’s advisable to go to menu and assign handy functions when “long press” the M button, the up and down buttons, the exit button, the two buttons by the PTT. For example I’ve chosen to use long press on the M button to toggle the three modulation modes without going to menu. I have the lower function button long press to “scan”. It’s very advisable when you make your lists of memory channels/scan lists (2 lists), to choose from the menu “display name (alpha tag) and frequency beneath it, it’s like on a high end radio! Hope I haven’t forgotten other nice options if yes I’ll add them. Have fun!!😀 R
That’s strange, tried mine and it works, the only difference is that it’s the metal frame screen version of the same radio (but I doubt this matters). did the other answers fix this?
After watching a lot of vids from different channels I have bought one of these, not arrived yet. So no first hand knowledge. I did watch a side by side comparison of usb receive between egzumer and ijv and the latter was a clear winner. In fact egzumer was not receiving anything when ijv was. The test was done with the same antenna and both firmware on both radios, against a beacon. Seems like each has it's own strength's and weaknesses.
Thanks for the video Fred, on my version I think you push either F5 o F6 together to access the scope, mine sounds pretty good on SSB, that sounds pretty shocking to me , plus the double Sideband is on the other programme Edzumer only has Upper Sideband and as everybody and their Dog says (as you did) don't TX on 27MHz
Thanks. Yes F & 5 reduces the freq display to the top of the screen but does not add the scope at the bottom. I will have to try F & 6. SSB receive has been good over the weekend with just a bit of bleed over between close freqs. Video up this sunday.
That's great, on my Quansheng UV K5 I'm sure it was F and 6 together I enter the scope I did a video last Christmas with me using it, TBH for a tenner pretty decent IMO🙂 Cheers Dave @@CB-RADIO-UK
Yep. With an adapted USB cable so you can hear it and use the pc to control it. I wonder what else the boffins will come up with now pc's are involved.
Cb works great I've got a clip of some scousers talking on my 'channel' The thing works well, really well. It seems to compare with my at5555 but those locals were using 40w or more and less than 5 miles away.
I wanted to ask you, scince you tinker a lot with firmwares for the Quansheng, - which one of them are best for AM-airband? 73- Levi from Sweden (and a subscriber)
I would keep it off whilst flicking through channels and when on keep it as low as possible when you have it on as you might miss distant stations calling out.
Thanks Fred it's a awesome radio even with the small rubber duck ariel. I bought it for the car no drilling holes or making a mess of the dash. Thank you fred
If you are receiving CB only, then the antenna really can be flexible. The CB signals do not know or care what antenna you use. They are still transmitting and ending up in the area you are listening and will hit the antenna you are using. You could use a speaker wire and get good listening results. Don't know if you are a licensed ham but if you do have one or if you get licensed, you could get your DMR ID and you can communicate clearly around the world and not rely on skip on CB.
One question, I am just a rookie at all this, I was under the impression that Wide band was just for the FM & SW broadcast bands and all other transmissions like CB, HAM etc are narrow band. Also is that Wide/ Narrow setting for Rx only or both Rx & Tx as well ? So essentially when should I change it to Narrow in the menu settings, I'm just using my radio for Rx only btw. No Tx.
I have one question. Where do you guys get the USB windows driver from? Is it on a CD with the programming cable? Or did you guys install the Baofeng driver? Or does Windows recognize the device without installing a driver? I have seen so much video's. But no one talks about installing the USB driver software.
It prob would transmit as it seems it can be forced to transmit on any freq but i doubt it would be very effective and no idea where the harmonics would end up.
@@CB-RADIO-UK I already did. I unlocked all the frequencies, but on the 224Mhz frequency it won't let me broadcast. In fact, if I try to pair another walki on that frequency, it detects it as 449Mhz With the previous firmware, that didn't happen. Any solution?

No not really. You may pick up some very strong skip on a piece of wire but 27 MHz 11 meters needs a tuned antenna.
Sideband sounds aewful on all the mods on youtube, is it that bad in person?
No not at all. Ive got it coming in strong and clear today on the RA-79. The radio seems to suffer a little bleed over though.
