Why are people so shocked about this? Elves and half-elves are known for their longevity, the young looking elf who’s at level 15 with 4 multiclasses is kind of a running gag at this point.
I think part of it is because we see the characters in relation to each other. S'Heart looks younger than Astarion but he was turned at 39, and he's a high elf, not a half elf, so theoretically he should have aged slower than her. I know it could be a combination of factors that make the difference but yeah I think that's part of it. Lae'zel on the other hand, I think people get shocked by her age a lot
I don't know what's worse - people who don't know how elves work or dumb children who react to someone just being 40 years old is if it's some sort of horrible disease

@Shear666 Even full elves don't necessarily. Among their own kind, yes, adulthood takes much longer to reach, but they reach maturity at the same rate as humans do, and in human-dominated societies it's not uncommon for an elf in their 30s to be treated like they're a human of the same age.

According to 5E Half-Elves live for about 180 years and considering that Shadowheart was young child when she was taken maybe around 10 her age is probably around the 50’s still on the younger side for Half-Elves.

Humans - 60-90, gale is in his 30's - But there are wizards who prolong life due to the weave, Volo is another good example who is prolonging life by the weave - easy 150+ from his books Dwarfs - 200 to 350 - considered full adults at 50+, they scorn the young. Comparing elf maturity to human-equivalent maturity isn't how it works. Biological maturity and social maturity are entirely different. Half elves, live about twice as long on average as humans. Meanwhile a 300 year elf looks MAYBE 30 at most. (Though they don't map onto human age linearly normally, they look like young adults for longer and cover the 50-70 range in one century not two.)
I know that at least four different people have pointed this out, but this really shouldn't be a surprise when Jaheira (another half-elf) is somewhere between a hundred and 140 while Minthara and Halsin are in their early 200s and 350s respectively.

No, Halsin is a full elf, he says he's 350 yo. Jaheira is half elf, if she was in her 30s in bg2, she should be around 150 in bg3. Half elves live around 180 years.

I mean Jaheira is either very close to 200 years old or is VERY young for her race in BG1 going by the timelines. And I would probably compare her physically to idk 60-70? If that. Hard to tell with someone who has been fighting their whole life and has remained fit and active. I'd probably say closer to a fit 60 year old.
I think Jaheira is supposedly somewhere around 150 years old. Baldur's Gate 1 was set roughly 100 years prior to BG3, and Jaheira was a young adult (Shadowheart's age) in that game.
She's a Half Elf, so by those standards she's pretty young. She'll probably live way past 100 up to maybe 180 to 200 years old depending on how life goes for her.

I'm pretty sure Astarion is older than Jaheira. Astarion mentions not seeing the Sun for 200 years - while Jaheira is somewhere around 150. Also, Astarion is an Elf, so there's no telling how old he was before he became a vampire (though he mentions he was a magistrate, so at the least an adult with a job).
I think it is shocking because she ACTS like a young adult in her 20s. I thought that artifact mission is her first real mission, first adventure in the big world. She is a naive maximalist, not doubting her goddess until Tav starts asking simple questions. It would be okay if she had spent her childhood and teen years with Shar (up to 15 years), but in my opinion 30 years would make her a real cultist. And I don't think it would be that easy for us to cut through the brainwashing in that case

I'm gonna do some math for other characters with vague age including Astarion (~400), Minthara (~200), and Viconia (300+): Considering Viconia was in previous BG games which would make her 180+ years old (adulthood at 80, 100 year gap) but judging by appearance more likely 300+ years old since Drow live to be 500-900 years old, raising shadowheart for 40 years was a blink of her lifespan.. extrapolating this information we can assume Minthara is about 200 years old based on both being Lolth-sworn Drow and Minthara appearing significantly younger but still quite mature emotionally. Astarion, going by the age of maturation in high elves (100), the cannonical description of his appearance by age (30 human years), their lifespan (750) and the duration of his enthrallment (200 years) during which time he, as a vampire, would not have aged physically; we can assume he is around 400 years old or a bit older than Halsin (350 cannonically), making Astarion both the most childish and eldest of companions.
Astarion's tombstone says he was 39 when he died, which is quite young for an elf. Going by how long he was enslaved, we can assume he's younger than 250.

Astarion is around 239 years old, he’s the oldest origin but not companions (either Halsin or Jaheira). Wyll is the youngest I think, if i’m not mistaken he become warlock at 17 years old and for 14 years

Shart is 20+ year old while Jaheira would probably in her early 70 - 80. Astarion is a vampire but before that he was an elf. So... He probably had been around for more than 200+ year for the look of it. He has appearance of 30+ before he got turned by Cazador. Elf mature at 200 year of their lifespan which means their 20+ but Astarion is 30+ that means before he turned he was 300+ year old after turning into a vampire and live for 200 year he would be around 500 years old today. Viconia are in her 30 during bg1 and 2 meaning she was around 40-50 in bg3 but she looks incredibly old for some weird reasons.
But Astarion is an elf and was turned when he was 30, so that would make him 18 years old when he became a Vampire. A Vampire can't 'grow up' or age, thus even though Astarion became a Vampire 200 years ago, he has the mind and emotion of an 18 years old who went sexual and physical abuse during his enslavement.

No, Halsin is a full elf, he says he's 350 yo. Jaheira is half elf, if she was in her 30s in bg2, she should be around 150 in bg3. Half elves live around 180 years.

I mean Jaheira is either very close to 200 years old or is VERY young for her race in BG1 going by the timelines. And I would probably compare her physically to idk 60-70? If that. Hard to tell with someone who has been fighting their whole life and has remained fit and active. I'd probably say closer to a fit 60 year old.
I think Jaheira is supposedly somewhere around 150 years old. Baldur's Gate 1 was set roughly 100 years prior to BG3, and Jaheira was a young adult (Shadowheart's age) in that game.

I'm pretty sure Astarion is older than Jaheira. Astarion mentions not seeing the Sun for 200 years - while Jaheira is somewhere around 150.
Also, Astarion is an Elf, so there's no telling how old he was before he became a vampire (though he mentions he was a magistrate, so at the least an adult with a job).

I think it is shocking because she ACTS like a young adult in her 20s. I thought that artifact mission is her first real mission, first adventure in the big world. She is a naive maximalist, not doubting her goddess until Tav starts asking simple questions. It would be okay if she had spent her childhood and teen years with Shar (up to 15 years), but in my opinion 30 years would make her a real cultist. And I don't think it would be that easy for us to cut through the brainwashing in that case

I'm gonna do some math for other characters with vague age including Astarion (~400), Minthara (~200), and Viconia (300+):
Considering Viconia was in previous BG games which would make her 180+ years old (adulthood at 80, 100 year gap) but judging by appearance more likely 300+ years old since Drow live to be 500-900 years old, raising shadowheart for 40 years was a blink of her lifespan..
extrapolating this information we can assume Minthara is about 200 years old based on both being Lolth-sworn Drow and Minthara appearing significantly younger but still quite mature emotionally.
Astarion, going by the age of maturation in high elves (100), the cannonical description of his appearance by age (30 human years), their lifespan (750) and the duration of his enthrallment (200 years) during which time he, as a vampire, would not have aged physically; we can assume he is around 400 years old or a bit older than Halsin (350 cannonically), making Astarion both the most childish and eldest of companions.
Astarion's tombstone says he was 39 when he died, which is quite young for an elf. Going by how long he was enslaved, we can assume he's younger than 250.

Astarion is around 239 years old, he’s the oldest origin but not companions (either Halsin or Jaheira). Wyll is the youngest I think, if i’m not mistaken he become warlock at 17 years old and for 14 years

Shart is 20+ year old while Jaheira would probably in her early 70 - 80.
Astarion is a vampire but before that he was an elf. So... He probably had been around for more than 200+ year for the look of it. He has appearance of 30+ before he got turned by Cazador. Elf mature at 200 year of their lifespan which means their 20+ but Astarion is 30+ that means before he turned he was 300+ year old after turning into a vampire and live for 200 year he would be around 500 years old today.
Viconia are in her 30 during bg1 and 2 meaning she was around 40-50 in bg3 but she looks incredibly old for some weird reasons.
But Astarion is an elf and was turned when he was 30, so that would make him 18 years old when he became a Vampire. A Vampire can't 'grow up' or age, thus even though Astarion became a Vampire 200 years ago, he has the mind and emotion of an 18 years old who went sexual and physical abuse during his enslavement.
