  • Recommendations Aquarium Size
When keeping discus fish, you should choose one of the following four options:
    1. Breeding Discuses (Discus Pair)
To breed discus fish, we recommend using an aquarium with a capacity of
    150 litres/40 US gallons
    (60 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm) (24” x 20” x 20”)
Juvenile fish should be separated from the parent fishes when they are 12 - 14
days old. At this age they start seeking out food on the floor of the aquarium and
    could ingest pathogens or germs.
    2. Discus Pair with Companion Fish in an Aquarium with Plant Life
You will need an aquarium with a capacity of at least
    180 litres/50 US gallons
    (100 cm x 40 cm x 45 cm) (40” x 16” x 18”)
We recommend an aquarium size of
    250 litres / 65 gallons
    (100 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm) ( 40” x 20” x 20”)
When keeping a pair of discus fish, the two fish should be at least 14 cm in
size, because two smaller fish, kept as a pair, will not grow well in size, as
“competitive feeding” does not take place.
    3. Rearing Discus Fish, Keeping a Discus Group
To rear a discus group (of at least 10 fish) an aquarium with as small a capacity
as180 litres / 50 US gallon is sufficient
    (100 cm x 40 cm x 45 cm) (40” x 16” x 18”)
However, for 10 fully-grown fish we recommend using an aquarium with a
capacity of at least 300 litres/ 80 gallons.
    4. Discus Group with Companion Fish in Aquarium with Plant Life
For 10 fully-grown discus fish with additional companion fish and plant life
we recommend using an aquarium with a capacity of at least
    400 litres / 105 US gallons.
    (160 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm) (63” x 20” x 20”)

Discuses have no particular environment other than the tank itself. Where they are located is adaptable to your situation. Discus can adapt to almost any environment as long as that environment has consistent elements of traffic, noise and your interaction with your fish. Maintenance, Water changes and feeding are all important activities that build trust. If you are netting your fish and scaring them more than necessary, each time you approach the tank your fish will be suspect about why. If you make the experience a good one you build trust. Plan long term for your fish so that they can continue throughout their life cycle to experience the same environment and not disrupt their life experiences and patterns. This is True with all Tropical fish but some more than others. Discus fish are in that category where great care in planning a safe and stable environment yields the best results. They are not that fragile, they just need your trust. Good Luck!

Why you guys are always saying the maximum size required for a full grown fishes. Anyone can start with a smaller tank with some Juveniles. If they are grown then you can upgrade it. I had 4 medium sized discus and two neon rainbow in my 20 gallon tank. They are comfortable and once they got big I upgraded to 40 gallon tank. Which is more than enough for 4-6 full grown discus. I have been in discus hobby for 10 years. People like you just making the hobbyist afraid.

Agreed, it is a wrong informative video to scare the people who wants to keep discus by telling them that keeping discus is complicated. Wrong, just wrong.

Really depends on what sort of Discus you're keeping. Disucs try to blend into their background. Darker strains will work better on black or red and lighter strains on light blue or white backgrounds. Hope this helps.

    • @AquaFishHobbyist
      @AquaFishHobbyist  7 лет назад +1

NO! Not only are discus TROPICAL fish, they need exceptionally warm water. I'm talking over 80 degrees. Furthermore, they need extremely clean water. There is no way you can keep them with goldfish.
and for shark fish There is a chance that the bigger fish will harrass the discus.
so i prefer only angel fishes with discus

    • @Lost-Orbz
      @Lost-Orbz 7 лет назад

Goldfish like the fancy ones can tolerate high temperature unlike what you guys think. In Philippines (tropical country) were fancy goldfish are a norm since the Chinese introduced them long time ago, breeders are breeding them in backyard setups with no fancy coolers and stuff and they are just fine. The potential problem you will have with goldfish and discus in one tank is that goldfish can out compete with discus when it comes to feeding especially if you have shy ones. Your discus might starve to death if you don't make sure they get their share.

I recommend only discus and cleaning fishes like corydoras and otocinclos. I keep many medium size shrimps as well to eat the algae and the food remains (I have many plants in my tank).
Gold fish and even Angel fish eat faster than the discus. I decided to remove my Angel fish from my Discus tank because of that.
Gold fish make a lot of poo and you have to change the water often but both are friendly fishes if you don’t have a problem with that.
Shark fish gets big and once it reaches a big size, it starts to get very aggressive. I don’t recommend any kind of aggressive fish with Discus.
You can try small fishes like neon fish since they are not too small or the Discus will eat them.
