Norman's Lampeye killifish is also a great addition to Discuss tank. They are also a schooling fish, and they always stay on the top 3rd of the tank. But they are pretty small, so there's chances to get eaten by discuss. I didn't faced that. I used see they laying eggs. Some times babies too. Mostly likly discuss will eat the eggs.

    Troy,
Bleeding heart and Congo tetras are good with discus also. I think you mentioned Congo tetras. I know there are some tetras that are very fin nippy and if water is to warm can also make it hard for some tetras. Maybe even some type of danio species but those fish are crazy swimmers and not sure if the discus will get freaked out lol. Appreciate the content. I added in my 90 gal Central American tank about 10 or so Buenos Aires tetras as dither fish but those fish are crazy and eat plants and can be fin nippers.

Great video! If I had one thing that I did not agree with is the neon tetras and discus, I don't think they would do well in that 83-86 range and the might ve small enough to get eaten. But other than that good info and keep the content coming!

I have black neons, rummynose, sterbai corys, lemon blue eye bristol nose pleco and three yoyo loaches. I have a tall tank so the black neons stay more to the top area while the rummynose are more to the bottom. I had thought about angelfish but I'd rather add another discus, didn't want to take away the discus as the primary focal point of the tank. All doing fine and I keep mine btwn 84-85 degrees.

This is the first video I heard that adress Hatchet Fish, so thank you!
I dont get why they are not paired with Discus more often, since they also live pretty much in the same area.
They also are pretty chill and occupy a space of the tank that other fishes dont even consider (the only problem really is that they jump!).
I guess people dont like them, a shame. Especially for the Marble Hatchet Fish, its stunning

@joojoobean_5572 I'm guessing it's a 6 ft 125 usually no problems with mid size plecos in that size tank. I wouldn't do a pair of 12" plecos in that size tank. 2 plecos about 6" maybe 8" is possible

    • @joojoobean_5572
      @joojoobean_5572 Год назад +1

Yea makes sense since they’re midsize plecos. Have any of you paired a midsize Pleco with a few bristlenose? The tank is 5ft 100 gal so in theory it should have enough room and hiding spots when I finish scaping it.

Might be a one in a million though.

I keep black neon tetras with my discus. It's a planted tank and I find their colour really sets off with the greens of the plants and the reds and blues of the discus. I feel like cardinals/neons would be a bit too much, but that's just me. Pretty much identical tank requirements, so it's just my preference.

Wonderful Info for a successful aquarium. I have a 65 gal Juwel aquarium. You said 75 gal or more. I was thinking if I just kept a single eye popping pair of Discus, 4 to 6 angel fish, 8 Cardinal Tetras, 4 hatchet fish, 2 Bristle nose plecos, and 4 to 5 corys. I would install 2 spray bars to manage water movement, and pack my filters with lots of good bio media, and water changes of 1/3 two to three times weekly. Also I like to extend the roots of philodendron plants and spider plants into the water. I though that by just putting the roots in the water the plants could still cope with the higher water temperatures of 82 to 83 degrees. So I feel good about this. Of course my tanks stars would be my Discus pair. What do you think Cichlid Brothers of my plan. Do you think I'm pushing it? I have been keeping fish since I was 8 and I am 66 yrs young now and have good instincts with my aquariums in the past, but I have never kept Discus. I plan on spending about $300 for the Discus. I will buy them from a trusted source so my primary concerns are for the Discus first, however I feel this set up would be good for their tank mates as well. So please let me know your thoughts. I would appreciate your feedback.

When I had Discus I ran my ph at 6.3. I have to disagree with some of the tank mates you mentioned and that is because some of them will nip the Discus fins especially the Angels. I did keep corys, neons, cardnials, rasboras, and plenty of live plants. Where do you keep your ph at? Where I am from the shops here say 7.9 to 7.5. That has to be to much stress on them.

I have a Silver Arowanna, lemon oscar, pink tail, Angel's, albino thread fin acara, blue acara, blood parrot, and three species of bichir and four strains of severums they all do really well together but going to move oscar and blood parrot, maybe Arrowanna as they all get bigger. The biggest thing I've found over the years is big filtration and good water changing habits. Also having multiple tanks to relocate troublesome fish. I have a breeding pair of hybrid convicts that are absolute terrors in the South American main display that I placed in a glofish tank with angelfish, skirt tetras and they keep to themselves and breed. You never know what will work until you try......as long as one can't eat the other. Lmao

Any fish that going to outcompete the Discus in food is not good and your temperature should be 85 and Discus can be real aggressive towards there how . If the tank is not 85 are you have a aggressor are they are being outcompeted eventually your Discus will start getting sick by stop eating

    • @CichlidBros

Keeping Discus higher than 84 only increases their metabolism and shortens their life. There natural habitat is not 85° all year.
