- "You'd marry Mary Ann, you'd date Ginger. You'd have to buy her a martini and take her out to dinner. Mary Ann would raise your children and help you on the farm." Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann on 'Gilligan's Island,' reflects on the age-old question: Ginger or Mary Ann?
"I know I wasn't going commando, or whatever it is!" That was the cutest thing! I'd still marry this woman, if she'd have me. I spent many afternoons after school watching this show and I always wondered if Gilligan secretly sabotaged every solution to leave the island because he was in love with Mary Ann.
I have heard that Dawn Wells DID and does receive residuals.
As the story goes, she was one of the last ones hired when the show was going in to production. Her husband at the time was an agent. As a gimme, he asked for residuals to be included in the contract-- and no one ever thought that it would amount to anything.
So she received residuals all those years-- and kept it secret because she knew it would cause issues with the other cast members if they knew.
"It was silly. Trite, perhaps. Nothing to think about."
Sometimes, those are the best shows, because that is what you need.
"But it made you HAPPY." That is what people want after real life troubles, to be entertained not preached to or reminded of their own troubles.
I'm here after learning of Dawn Wells' passing. RIP Dawn. We'll miss you and you'll always be Marry Ann to me!

As it turned out "and the rest" became and still are two of the most loved characters from the show. "The Professor and Mary Ann". But yeah we love them all, a big source of light-hearted joy for all of us kids growing up in the 60s.
Beauty is not everything by any means... but young or old, she is BEAUTUFUL! In heart & spirit as well as looks :)
Of ALL the Characters on this show, the one that amazed me the most was the Professor. That guy could fix almost anything.. anything except for a hole in a boat :D

I saw a photo of Mary Ann at 80 years of age on the "Then and Now" video. I am 56 years old and I would still chase her like she was the last lady on the planet. She is just incredible. Who would think you would say an 80 year old that she is HOT but she is!!!
You can't help but love this lady! So fun, positive, and aware of the impact this show has had on pop culture.
I bought the entire season's episodes on DVD and I watch them to escape reality. They still make me laugh just as they did when I watched the series on television as a teenager during the 1970s. It is the first time I have seen it in colour too.
I just watched the entire run of episodes on DVD, too (over a period of three months, I might add!).
They're witty, intelligent, sharply written, brilliantly directed and acted, and often surprisingly deep.
I have it too! I think GI and Columbo .. are the only series on disc I ever binged watched.
Down to earth and gorgeous! What a combination!

While I've always had a crus h on Get Smart's Barbara Fel don, I'd have to admit if I did n't, I'd choose Mary Ann. Bet ween her & Ginger I always f elt Mary Ann was sweet & a- s cute as a button. I don't kn ow how it got past the cens- or or the film crew, but in the one clip of Mary Ann & Ging- er exercising, you can see M ary Ann's belly button. Oops.

Always loved Dawn Wells. Have to say she's aged pretty well. Still quite lovely and charming. As far as the Ginger vs. Mary Ann question, it's no contest. Mary Ann all the way. Sweet, cute figure, and she would make you a coconut cream pie. What more could you ask for? Ginger was too high maintenance.

"The show became a 'modest hit' " WHAT? The show was wildly successful with viewers, and even to this day. It was the critics and execs who couldn't stand it.
And from that 'fateful' day forward.. the show has never gone off the air. Not bad for a 'modest hit'.

At 3.06 Dawn hit the nail on the head "it made you happy" it was a fun happy trivial laugh out loud show and i loved it i was 10 when it finished and we got reruns for a long time here in OZ and i still watched it for years later tv was fun and entertaining as there were so many great shows we got from overseas at that time.

when i would come home from high school i would watch this show even if i was older i loved gilligans island it was funny and really showed how people that had different ways of doing things and thinking got along and really loved each other and i am sure that they are all in heavan still having fun doing what they love thank you alane jim natalie dawn , russell and bob and tina for all the great fun you gave me and everyone you will all live on in our hearts and minds

Like many others in the 60's I was about ten years old when Gilligan first aired and I had a instant crush on Mary Ann. When I look back now at age 62, I still have a crush on her but my wife does not know that ;-)
Loved the show...used to get home after school and watch gilligans island...the Munsters..all those great shows back then

She was really good in all the tv acting she did. Many of those programs are in reruns today. Gilligan was at the top of the ratings when it was in its final year. It should have stayed on. It was childish but harmless and funny.

I met Dawn Wells after "What Would Mary Anne Do?" came out. She signed my copy of the book. But now I'm regretting not bringing my DVDs of the first 3 seasons. It's too bad Tina Louise didn't want anything to do with the show after it ended.
Dawn Wells was a Miss America contestant - Nevada 1959. Of course she's beautiful, poised, intelligent, adorable etc. Most of us are punching way over our weight. (:

I was lucky to meet her in 2003 and Alan Hale Jr. in 1986. I grew up wanting to meet all of them,but I'm not going to complain either.

There's a part of me that died as each cast member died. Now that there's only "Tina Louise" left, it's not the same?????
With the recent passing of "Johnny Crawford, from " The Rifleman" series, there's only been one actor that I was willing to join him in the after life. That's "Robin Williams" and when he committed suicide, I cried for two weeks. I can't watch anything of his without crying and wishing he was still here!!!!!!!
I'm getting all teared up right now.......... I miss you all, "Robin, Dawn and Johnny!"
