I was advised to diversify my portfolio among several assets such as stocks and bonds since this can protect my inherited portfolio of about $2.5m. I’m used to just buying and holding assets which doesn’t seem applicable to the current rollercoaster market plus inflation is catching up with my portfolio. I’m really worried about survival after retirement.
True, I mostly just buy and hold stocks, but my portfolio has been mostly in the red for quite awhile now. Unfortunately to be able to make good gains, you’ll need to be consistent and restructure your portfolio frequently.
In my opinion, it was much easier investing back in the 60s but it’s a lot trickier now, those making consistent profit in these times are professionals reason I’ve been using an advisor for the past 5 years to consistently build my portfolio in preparations for retirement.
My partner’s been considering going the same route, could you share more info please on the advisor that guides you?
Well, there are a few out there who know what they are doing. I tried a few in the past years, but I’ve been with Melissa Terri Swayne for the last five years or so, and her returns have been pretty much amazing.

I have a 3 fund portfolio consisting of 33% S&P, 33% Total stock, and 33% international. I feel a need to focus on complete growth so I went 100% stocks, but does the SP500 and TSM overlap too much to make sense holding both? However I’ve been in the red for a month now. I work hard for my money, so investing is making me a nervous sad wreck. I don’t know if I should sell everything, sit and just wait but watching my portfolio dwindle away is such an eye -sore.

My 2 tips are always remember to diversify. Never put all your eggs in one basket no matter how good it looks. Finally, You must either understand the market/the particular place you want to put your money into before doing so. If you can't use a fin. adviser, gambling your funds does not make you a better investor.
Apt... I've been using an FA since covid and I'm stunned that most people don't use this but prefer "gambling" and complaining they lost their money... I've made close to a hundred grand this year only after years of throwing my money in the wind... If only I could make up for the lost time.

I use to be more of a swing trader, but have changed my ways to an investor and starting to listen to you in October of last year had a big influence on that decision. I was up 3x with SMCI and I thought about selling, but owned it less than a year and decided selling was not a good decision. I have come a long way. lol. Great advise. My only counterpoint, which I think is important to say, is that during the crash of 2008/2009 even the most diversified portfolios were crushed. When the pain is everywhere in the market (outside of insurance on credit default), everyone suffers. The primary hedge to such a situation is to stay long if able.
One thing you didn’t touch on is re-balancing your portfolio. After META grew so much and so big in your portfolio, will you sell some and buy the smaller positions to diversify risk of META crashing?
