this battle is so poetic for so many reasons. another parallel between this battle and the one in the phantom menace is that maul lost due to his arrogance and underestimating obi-wan. when obi-wan was stuck hanging from the edge of the pit, maul became arrogant thinking that he would be the first to have killed two jedi, but then obi wan surprise attacked him and caught him off guard by jumping up, ultimately leading to his victory
Possibly the best duel in all of Star Wars. Most people just like to see flashy choreography, but the best choreography is the type that tells the story for you. This duel is just perfectly crafted in every way.
@@reallymakesyouthinkyeah but Disney are selfish they could have given us the duel with Vader then ended it with the duel against maul signifying obi wan’s transformation into wise old man but no we don’t get treats from Disney just bullshit stories written by 2 different directors who never even spoke to each other lol
Quick duels can work because it shows how a great warrior like Obi-Wan can easily take advantage of an opening a cocky opponent can make quickly ending the fight and killing the opponent. The duels between Rey and Kylo Ren in the sequels should have been the same quick duel with Rey easily being killed by Kylo but Rey had plot armor
"Why you are here ? Are you protecting something...No Someone" (i think this was what Maul said xD and i think this scene in Rebels is one of the Sad ones, i literally had Tears in my eyes when he died there because it felt like a (in German it is called "Freindschaft" a Fuse of the Word "Freundschaft" = "Friendship" and "Feindschaft" = "Enmity") ended right here and it was a very good one)
It also made sense that it would be a quick fight because Obi-Wan went for the kill. He normally fought defensively and Maul would not expect this level of aggression. When Maul figured out Luke was there Obi-Wan decided to end him because the stakes were so high. You could see his regret that Maul never grew beyond his feverish hatred and it cost him his life.
I remember watching youtuber reactions to the duel, and one youtuber being such a star wars nerd, he realised the significance on Obi changing stance in real time.
Maul lost and Obi-wan won because of two reasons: the first is because he wouldn't let go of his grudge against Obi-wan (whereas the latter, despite how Maul killed Satine, resisted the possible urge to hate and instead honored his master who tutored him in how to become a Force Ghost upon death); the second is how Maul looked at Obi-wan as an object and didn't account for how other sapients can use their brains in creative ways, leaving himself open the moment he first lunged. What both of these weaknesses have in common is how they correspond to goal-orientation and its narrow-mindedness. Maul could have let go of his hate for Obi-wan, but blinded himself to all paths but revenge, and said revenge blinded him to how smart his opponent would be. Maul could have also decided this was not a good path to take and instead *created* a newer Force-sensitive organization, either dark, gray, or light, but chose to *destroy* someone he intensely disliked, resulting in his own destruction.
This is my contender for the best lightsaber duel in all of Star Wars. Anakin vs Obi-Wan is flashy and high stakes and you can feel the weight behind each swing, and Duel of the Fates is always gonna be the most important duel in the series because it dictated the rest of Anakin's journey, but in these three simple movements Obi-Wan not only brings a multiple decade long feud to a swift end, but paraphrasing Sam from the interview mentioned here, in the end Maul finally puts the pieces together and the moment he gets hit with the lightsaber he realizes "Oh shit, this is a Jedi Master, and if he's this good then this is the most important guard post in the galaxy".
Watching this scene I always wondered how Obi-Wan "beat" Maul... You see him cut his saber in half. But I watched the scene about 200 times and couldn't figure out once, how or where he wounded or hit him with his light saber. And only by getting his light saber cut in half, Maul would never go down and die
Further proved how arrogant Maul was to the end and how genius Obi-Wan has become over the years The true Jedi who gave peace to the fallen Sith-apprentice
Sith may be smart masterminds, but in the end they always underestimate their foes. Like Maul with padawan Kenobi and blind Kanan. Even the Emperor underestimated the danger coming from his enemies during Endor after 2 decades of being a winner.
I don't think I'm the only one who got it but he was done at this point and he just wanted an honorable death. A way out of the madness! Probably the only one he respected Obi-Wan.😔
The reason why he died is because he has no more force alive hatred which can keep a sith alive once maul relize he was wrong about his revenge and long possess force alive hatred which was keeping him alove so when was in obi wans lap he actually was bleeding out and finally dies
What i don't see is how the HECK Maul died. I mean, Disney characters are getting a stab through vital organs, yet acting all fine. Yet Maul gets...what...a slice down the chest and he dies?? It's lazy writing
I always wondered how that was supposed to make sense, but what I think is..in that moment, he let go of his hate, which is what kept him alive all this time, so because he let go of it for a second, he slowly began to die.
I thik is very meaninfull, and I think he lost because he no longer had the power of the dark side of the force very deep inside him, he was tired of it, of the pain it caused him, he just used it because it was the only thing he knew
I love this scene. But I still don't get how Obi-Wan killed Maul, as much as we can see all he did was cut his lightsaber in half but that's it, theres no scorch mark on his robes or him, his face isnt cut, so what did Obi-Wan do?
I was, and still am. Confused as to how he died after obi wan cut his lightsaber in half did he run out of breath mid fight or something lol bro said "aight imma die now"
I can't get free from the feeling that Maul understood before the duel all about Obi-Van and himself. And as he felt himself unable either to replace Obi-Van or help him in his mission. He felt himself useless and decided himself to pass away. He nearly made Kenobi kill him...
Actually Darth Maul was right about him. Rat in a desert, and he also acted like rat. Same shit he did with Anakin in Mustafar in high ground. On purpose telling him “don’t try it” so he can manipulate his decision. Fuck he’s worse than Palpatine. He also turned his wife against him, WTF?! He trained his son and eventually turned his own son against him and also killed him with Luke’s heands. What the hell is wrong with this guy???
Maul sought his end like an old tiger I believe in my black sith heart that maul wanted a clean death a warriors death and went to obi wan to finish what he started decades earlier on naboo
He underestimated the Padawan. And many decades later, he underestimated the Master. Young fool. Only now at the end do you see.
I wouldn’t call him a fool. Simply someone dealt a bad hand.
@@Fayrinn_09Well, I believe he's just quoting Palpatine in ROTJ when Palpatine starts to use Force lightning on Luke.

So basically he underestimated Obi-Wans knowledge of the high ground
And then used a banned lightsaber move to cut maul in half
"is it him? Is he the chosen one?"
"He is"
"Then he will avenge us."

Agreed. It was perfect, well thought out and executed
Still think should have been a long fight with this being the final move
Obi-wan humbled 2 Sith(1 of them twice) by recognizing their arrogance and using it to beat them.
He humbled both Sith twice.
I wish this final fight would have came out in the Obi-Wan series
I was hoping they put it in aswell. It would have worked at the end of the last episode and gave a massive twist.

The fact that obi one talked to him as he died is a true show of character and respect

I tear up evry time i see this scene, its just so beutifull and poetic and i cant help it
This is why it's one of my favorite lightsaber duels.
As you explained it, I realized what maul tried to do when he raised his lightsaber like that
Thank you for everything Vader! You help me so much with understanding Star Wars better!
Of course!

Tbh this was the greatest animated duel that put an end to Maul’s misery once and for all.
Him holding Maul at the end gives me chills.
I remember watching youtuber reactions to the duel, and one youtuber being such a star wars nerd, he realised the significance on Obi changing stance in real time.
The dual from the phantom menace played a huge role in Darth Mauls and Darth Vader defeat by the hands of obi-wan.
Sam's line here ("Obi-Wan isn't fighter anymore but he *will* end a conflict") really resonate.
Actually they were on a slight incline, Obi-Wan was a half inch higher than Maul.
“ He will avenge us “
This is one of my favorite duels just because of how much meaning it has behind it
So much detail packed into such a short duel. Makes this one of my favorite duels
my least favourite cause maul dies

obi-wan has now cut maul in half both horizontally and vertically
Rest well old foe You were right all along
This one moment made the whole episode the best in all of Rebels.
So powerful, I loved this duel despite how short it was
This scene was so amazing.
Probably one if the best duels in the series.
a legit DEFENSE Master.
he remembers when arrogants (Anakin and Maul) are about to use a specific move done before.

He realised that before he attacks, he literally does a whole speech about it which causes Obi-Wan to ignite his lightsaber in the first place
and even then, i will still stand by that darth maul was one of if not the most badass star wars characters
Watching this scene I always wondered how Obi-Wan "beat" Maul... You see him cut his saber in half. But I watched the scene about 200 times and couldn't figure out once, how or where he wounded or hit him with his light saber. This duel reminded me of a short dueling scene in Akira Kurosawa"s Seven Samurai. In that one the overconfident fighter also died.
*gets killed*
*falls to obi wan's arms*
"*Coughs* o-obi wan *coughs again* I was lagging........."

The true Jedi who gave peace to the fallen Sith-apprentice
Darth Maul actually committed suicide... He knew he wouldn't win
BRO, HE UNDERSTIMATED HIM AGAIN?! HE DOESN'T LEARN FROM HIS MISTAKES.
Because Disney didn’t want Maul to be the bad guy in the sequels.
somehow darth maul returned
Somehow Maul patched himself up once again
Bro underestimated the jedi who literally slised him in half. Recklessly, huh?
Sith may be smart masterminds, but in the end they always underestimate their foes. Like Maul with padawan Kenobi and blind Kanan. Even the Emperor underestimated the danger coming from his enemies during Endor after 2 decades of being a winner.
And this obi-wan is that same old obi-wan from a new hope these last events of Rebels take place a few months before star wars movie four
He lost to Obi-Wan because Obi-Wan won.
I mean, the old stance trick. Works with someone who overlooked a lightsaber near a jedi he didnt secure yet
Maul always comes back. Would t be surprised to see him as a force ghost
Obi wan was worse than Palpitine and tried to trick Luke to kill his own father because he was jealous over a women still
Tssss bro after all the shid you went through in clone wars. You didn’t see that coming 🤦🏾♂️ cmon maul
Obi-Wan Kenobi🙌🏽
He lost because he also lost to Obi Wan, in The Phantom Menace.
And nowadays anyone who has plot armor can be literally stabbed by a lightsaber and be fine

Before first half was released in June, 1, did you have seen first two episodes of Dragon Rising in May, 22 on German?
Bro died because his lightsaber broke💀💀

How did he actuallly kill him bc I never saw a lightsaber go in mail
Darth Maul lost because he wasn't in the original trilogy. 😂
It would have been better to see Maul abandon the dark side and exile himself
His story run it's course
This scene makes me so sad because Maul is my favorite. I hate Obi-Wan because of this scene and because of the scene in the Phantom Menace
It was great. Just what is wrong with those lightsabers though they look like toothpicks.
I wonder why did Obi wan help him up when he was stabbed by him
damn. obi wan still respects maul by holding him when he falled to the ground.
I thik is very meaninfull, and I think he lost because he no longer had the power of the dark side of the force very deep inside him, he was tired of it, of the pain it caused him, he just used it because it was the only thing he knew
I still don’t see where obi wan’s lightsaber connected it just looks like maul just gave up on living after that loss like he died from embarrassment
He let go of his hate and anger, which is what kept him alive all this time.
Thats obi wan! Mind F ing everyone
why did rebels have such skinny lightsabers?

This audio ain’t half as good as he explained it
I can't get free from the feeling that Maul understood before the duel all about Obi-Van and himself. And as he felt himself unable either to replace Obi-Van or help him in his mission. He felt himself useless and decided himself to pass away. He nearly made Kenobi kill him...
Did obi-wan even hit him?
"Why did darth maul lose to obi wan in rebels"
Cuz he got sliced and died… no need for all this extra lore lol
That is not very specific way of saying on what made the duel short before Darth Maul died.
I don’t care how maul lost to Obi Wan I’m rebels I’m just confused on how he died i mean there was no damage on him so how did he die
In reality: the writers hated maul and didn’t want him to outlive obi-wan.
They gave Maul a bunch of character development in the Clone Wars, then in Rebels they clicked the 'undo' button.
GGs!!!
Why did maul lose to obi wan?
Um because hes lost every fight against obi wan
