The Unseen Drawing Issue That Messes Up Your Proportions

- You will wonder how you could have been so ignorant of this for so long! If you have trouble with proportions when you draw, this may be your entire problem -- or at least a part you can easily change. I've never seen this talked about in any video on another channel, but awareness of it has been a large part of controlling my own proportions when I draw.. Don't miss the easy method I show at the end of checking whether this is a problem for you or not.

Indeed, the line width creep is never mentioned anywhere, and your suggestion to use not the outer edge but the center of the line to match the edge of what is to be drawn is very useful. Thank you!
Nicely demonstrated. Working from periphery to the inner details might help beginners to retain the proportion and scale. I was looking forward to seeing how you approach the tricky part of sketching glass with its unique properties - reflection, transparency, shade and shadows. Perhaps we could get to see that in some other video.
Yes that would help this problem, but if you’re drawing directly in ink you have to get those larger proportions correct first go or else the details won’t fit in having their correct proportions. I often do a series of dot’s moving outward to indicate wider reference points to help with it all if they’re wrong, they’re mostly covered happily by the drawing.
@stephentraversart That's a good tip. Thank you!
A revelation! Thank you.
I believe I am getting lessons on drawing in your videos and that’s a good thing because I want to learn to draw more accurately. I am still very confused in this video about the line width effecting proportions??? I am hearing what you are saying, BUT not seeing what you are saying. That is because your measuring before you make the vertical and horizontal lines is going sooooo fast I don’t see that measuring happen or how you are measuring. I hope I have articulated what I mean because I think this was an important element to teach and you are trying to get us to incorporate this in our drawing practice to help us draw more accurately. I would love to see what you are saying in a demo that is not a complete drawing but examples of various parts, let’s say, of this drawing that demonstrate what you mean by: width of the line, corners, where edges meet and how you figure out where to put those dots (how you measure). PLEASE consider doing one of those for us❤
You can slow down RUclips videos to half speed if you want which on some videos would even make it slower than real time. Perhaps I’ll make another one though Thanks for the feedback 😀
