Yes today was tough, trust me I tried to be “not human” so I could tell you all how much I wanted to quit, or thought I should, but prevailed. My legs, and head just didn’t have it today. That park is beautiful and I normally canter round a lap feeling lovely, each lap felt pretty long today. I am extremely human, but I just try my best to keep pushing if I can. One more lap etc mentality.
To me, this is the perfect example: true smartness in running isn’t about pushing through every session. It’s about knowing when to adapt, when to pull back, and when to give your body the space it needs to grow stronger - even in the face of stress.
Mate, even your bad days are inspirational to us. If you can accept a bad day, we can accept bad days. It's how you overcome them that counts. Thanks for your honesty, it's such a rarity online.
Wow Lion. You’re videos are always relatable and what I needed. Currently on week 15 of your Marathon Plan but now have a head cold/fatigue/tired. Haven’t knocked out any workouts this week. Wanted to do those sessions to get body not to forget intensity. You’re right, I am not going to force it and dig a deeper hole for myself. I’m just happy this happened this week instead of race week next week. Good luck to you and to us. Im visualizing my race plan and trying to qualify for Boston. Thank you Lion.
It’s inspirational from the standpoint that we all those days. It’s helpful to amateurs like myself to see that out of you so I know the options of whether to pull back on training. It helps me to look past the bad days and trust the process. Keep up the great work!
I actually think this is way more inspirational/motivating and helpful to see, than you grinding through and getting the session done when you know you shouldn't. That's such a helpful lesson for us more amateur/hobby runners. Thank you - as ever!
The realist elite runner on social. Don't stop keeping it real cuz it's mad valuable to get this confirmation and understanding from a proper runner. A couple months ago in my TCS Toronto 1/2 block I was midway through a workout and blew up. Heart didn't feel right and I had to call.my wife to pick me up cuz I couldn't get back 5.miles to my car safely and comfortably. Realized my fueling, load etc just wasn't right for that session. Ran strong a couple days later and had a great rest of the block that led to a PR and great race. After the race I looked backed on that day 7 weeks earlier and was thankful I knew when to fold'em.
I think this is inspiring. Can't think of something more inspiring than a pro saying it's alright to fkn not go 100% or perfect your workout everytime. Life's so messy mate, it ain't perfect. Take care of yourself.
When the body is telling you to stop, it’s hard to listen but it’s the best choice to make. It’s great to see a pro coming out with the message that it’s ok to cut a session short, if the body is telling you to
Thank you Stephen I needed to hear this tbf and at this point in time too. I'm deffo exhausted from training with lots of stress at the moment. When your ready were all here to listen to yours. Keep the content coming as this is about not just being a runner but being a human.
Had an awful run in Week 11 of my first marathon block yesterday, quads sore on every step. This video made me realize we all go through it! Keep it up Scully, legend.
Sculli, honest to GOD, this was my exact session and problem today. Thanks for the honesty and humbleness to share, as I was quite disappointed with my run. Great Info!
Very honest with yourself , your human like us all, glad to know even someone as talented as yourself feels the stress and pressures of life , wishing you health and happiness 💪👌
I needed to hear this. I've been pushing myself hard for roughly 7-8months now. Currently I'm on a 4day rest bc my right knee feels slightly over used. I had some light swelling which I used the RICE method to address. But you're right, the body doesn't absorb the training when it's super stressed. Thanks for all you do mate!
I have to disagree! SOOO much inspiration in this video Scully!!! Sometimes the grind is not worth grinding thru. I’ve recently learned this lesson the hard way. Sending a ton of positive vibes your way❤
Always refreshing to hear that. Not like others that only show the super duper stuff and how they knock out ridiculous paces and enjoy it. Keep it up - good content good runner good guy. Cheers
As someone who is currently injured (calf), I respect and admire you stopping that session. Much, much better to undertrain than to overtrain, because that only ends one way. Also, I hope a brand comes in for you soon, you certainly deserve it and a brand getting behind you and truly supporting how you do things would be amazing. Keep doing what you do.
Great video, just shows everyone can have off days no matter how good a runner u are and shows its OK to pull d plug on a session rather than flog urself to finish a session 👍
This rings very true based on my experience. Just pushing through could possibly increase mental toughness, but I don’t think it necessarily always does; and it can definitely decrease fitness. I spent most of my life just pushing through things and I just over all got less and less healthy physically and mentally. It wasn’t until I started paying close attention to, and prioritizing, my recovery and my general well-being that I started seeing an overall prolonged increase in my mental and physical health. I think some people can get away with neglecting this more than others; and those people tend to throw stones at those that can’t and assume it all comes down to grit when they’re actually just lucky to have a more resilient genetic make up. Things that have turned my health around include meditation, Wim Hof Method, naps, sleep hygiene, saunas, consistent easy short runs and bikes, yoga nidra, Lectio Divina, hydration, massage, walking, writing/journaling, prayer, non-processed food, multivitamin, Rhodiola, and vitamin D. It’s inspiring to see you listening to your body and doing it the right way. Ty so much and blessings to you🙏❤️💪 🏃
The best change I made in training was knowing when to cut days completely. As soon as I checked the ego dropped the mileage I have ran nothing but PB'S
Out of contract is stupid, I literally bought from them last month because "If he's happy with it" knowing that I don't always have a good experience with them, but stuck with them to get some of their better stuff. If it weren't for you I'd have just jumped to another brand. GG
Funny I have been running for a couple of years now and all of a sudden the passion is gone and it was just to heavy to keep grinding away, especially in the cold. It seems like you are at a similar crosspoint. Maybe it is time to focus on something different like making you stronger or so. It is different for you I guess because you are a pro. But maybe it is good to shift your focus for a while.
One significant thing that I really respect about you Stephen is the way you show how human you are, even how elite you are.

that is so true. You need to listen to your body.
Even your bad days have great tips. Thats why you're a Legend Stephen
You wear your heart on your sleeve steven, thats a strength ❤

Yes let the body heel, eat and sleep well. You can only do damage now, but that’s stressful, and sorry to hear that.
It’s inspirational from the standpoint that we all those days. It’s helpful to amateurs like myself to see that out of you so I know the options of whether to pull back on training. It helps me to look past the bad days and trust the process. Keep up the great work!
You're absolutely spot on Stephen ,it's a real life situation, running has ups and downs and we have to stop sometimes and listen to our body
I actually think this is way more inspirational/motivating and helpful to see, than you grinding through and getting the session done when you know you shouldn't. That's such a helpful lesson for us more amateur/hobby runners. Thank you - as ever!
A topic that I can really relate to. Haven't seen it covered elsewhere, or certainly not as well. Thank you and look after yourself.

Thanks, Scully. Good luck turning the page to your next chapter. I'm sure that with patience something good will come your way. All the Best!
Having the wisdom to know and listen to your body the way you describe in the video seems pretty inspiring to me.
Keep doing what you're doing 👏🏻
Great video coach! Currently in Week 4 in your Marathon training ! Feeling good !
Ahhhh thinking outside of the box with this one. Love the topic Stephen.

Well done Scully, hope things start looking up for soon re the contract. Well done for trying to see the positives even in bad situations 👊

Au contraire, this is very inspiring! You are a strong amazing athlete and fabulous human been! 💪🏃🏻
I am a 60 + year old runner. I run on a feel basis. Just try to keep it consistent. Thanks for the reality lesson.
I saw those ladies checking you out when you were turning the corner lol Thanks for your vids, i, and a lot of others, appreciate what you're doing.
Congrats for your commitment
Thanks for sharing and best of luck.
Good luck with the XC. Respect
Keep goin Scully ❤
Love to you buddy ❤

Elite runners know when they need to stop. Well done.
+for us recreational runners the risk of injury and a sloppy running form increase exponentially
No, there is definitely an inspiration.
Are you running the masters international xc in Belfast? Looking to forward to seeing you race away in the distance if you are doing it.
Yeah
My physio says you can't be a superhero every day.

Have you ever done work with a sport psychologist? And if so, would you recommend it?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I just came to say 'happy birthday ' in advance.
Ha soon
When I feel like that and continue with training I'll end up with cold
