    There's generally a potato quartet:
    Cepelinai (potato dumplings)
    Bulviniai blynai (potato pancakes)
    Vėdarai (potato sausages)
    Kugelis (potato loaf)
You've tried the first two, so if you ever come to Lihtuania again, check the other two out as well (the restaurant you were at serves those dishes and they're great!)
You said that cepelinai dough is made from half boiled, half raw potato. I'm pretty sure that this varies region to region, since where I'm from, boiled potatoes in the dough is a no no - only raw(but again, Vilnius might have it different). Believe it or not, the texture and taste gets affected quite a bit.
Btw, tinginys (lazy man) or šakotis (tree cake) are usually not served as a part of a meal - they're on the table for guests to help themselves and DEFINITELY not served with nuts, chocolate or anything else traditionally - the restaurant tweaked it a bit (but the desert itself still looked great).

    • @algkep

Native Lithuanian here. I wouldn't say that mushroom soup in a bread pot is a traditional way of eating mushroom soup. That bread pot is a recent invention for using in restaurants and impressing the eaters. We would eat mushroom soup with a slice of bread or bread bits in the soup but not a soup in a bread :) Salmon is a recent addition to potato pancakes. As wild salmon was available in Lithuania it was quite difficult to catch it and that's why it's not a traditional food. We would eat lots of other fish (herring, pike and carp are the most popular ones) but a smoked or cured salmon is not one of them. Also I have no idea why that particular restaurant puts pea sprouts on cepelinai. We sometimes add them to salad but otherwise they are not a common food to eat and definitely not on cepelinai. A tree cake is called šakotis in Lithuanian and that can be translated as a branched-cake because of those spikes. But it's a local variant of German baumkuchen (literally a tree-cake) which is called so because of the rings you see in cross sections of the cake which are formed because the cake is baked in layers on a spit over an open fire. It's usually eaten just with a cup of tea, coffee or milk and without powdered sugar, chocolate sauce or other fancy things.
Other tradiltional Lithuanian food that you can try is lašiniai, skilandis, vėdarai, kugelis, karka, virtiniai, varškėčiai and obuolių sūris. Lašiniai is a smoked pork belly, really good with dark rye bread, pickled cucumbers and sliced onion or chives. Skilandis is a type of traditional smoked sausage. Vėdarai is potato sausage made by stuffing potato dough into pig intestines and baking them in an oven (preferably a traditional open fire oven). They're eaten with sour cream and bacon sauce of course. Kugelis is a potato casserole eaten, once again, with sour cream and bacon sauce. Karka is a smoked and baked or boiled and then baked pork knuckle eaten with potato mash/hot potatoes, sauerkraut and horse radish. Virtiniai are different kinds of dumplings with many different types of fillings, can be even sweet ones. Varškėčiai are either boiled curd cheese dough dumplings, which look a lot like gnocchi, or curd cheese dough pancakes. Both are eaten with some sweet sauce or sour cream and sugar. Obuolių sūris is a "cheese" made of apples. It's a dessert and tastes nothing like cheese, just looks like one :)

If you do that, don't be too lazy to prepare some circles of minced meat to add inside them. Half-burger thickness was my approach i guess.
I personally pre-fry them before adding to the pancakes to play it safe so that no meat is raw in there, plus pre-frying removes the moisture from the meat and it doesn't prevent the potatos to cook around it inside. The circles should initially be larger in diameter compared to planned pancake size because they shrink while being fried. Plus, the pancakes shouldn't be like oreos where meat is visible between the layers of potato. If potato dough doesn't overlap the meat in both sides and stick to each other, you may have problems flipping the pancakes.
They are refferred as Kėdainių blynai here, opposed to Žemaičių blynai which are made similarly but boiled potatoes are used instead of grated ones.

My husband and I were there about 5 yrs ago, we loved it! We had very little Lithuanian food though. We were on an economy tour, just the 2 of us with a driver and our English speaking guide. They were with us for 90% of our vacation, with them we had ceppalinai, and I had a mushroom soup, another day we had pink soup and I had the best mushroom turnover. We had a different guide in. Vilnius who brought us to a Chinese restaurant, Warning, do not go to a Chinese food in Lithuania! The next 2 days left we had Indian food, amazing. We did eat Lithuanian breakfasts and loved those, the coffee throughout Lithuania was incredibly good.

Hi, Loved your videos and your positive reactions to Your impressions in Vilnius! I am from Kaunas, and my favourite LT dish is Troškinti Kopūstai, which is stew of pickled cabage usually with smoked pork sausages or other pieces of meat in it. And Balandėliai - balls of minced meat mixed with rice wrapped in cabage leaves and stewed with carrots and onions, served with boiled potatoes and sour-cream. Also would recommend Tartar and Jewish cuisine, which is a part of Lithuanian heritage too as these nations lived here since ages: Kibin - pies with meat, vegetables or curd, traditionally with chopped sheep meat or pickled or fresh cabage, and Šimtalapis cake, which is kind of bahlava with thick poppy filling. Of fish dishes, of course, herring is the most popular, especially marinated, and Gefil-de-fish stuffed fish! No fiest goes on without a salad or hundreds of variaties of salads, which we simply call Mišrainė! Hope you come back for your next fiest (in summer ;)!!!

I make saltibarsciai several times a month (the pink soup)! For years I've had gut issues, and this soup has healed me.
The bacon sauce is made with traditional smoked pork fat called Lašiniai. (Sounds like lesh-shan-ay). It's a combination of sauteed onions, sour cream and Lašiniai. I have madle Cepelinai before! Not as easy to make as it would seem!

@Garfield JV salmon and curd is a pretty common side for potato pancakes over here, and tastes very good. Is it a traditional way - of course not. Neither is bacon (to be fair it's first time I've seen it served like that). What is the worst is all the greens over cepelinai - well it's NEVER like that. And you don't take kastinys with cepelinai either. But to be fair, other than those, this actually looked like a pretty decent rep of the traditional meals over here. Lot's of others missed too, though :)

    Hello!
Great video, but some fixes: With cepelinai you received sour cream with bacon cracklings in one cup. It was meant to be mixed together and then poured on cepelinai. Same goes for potato pancakes with bacon. It's what we usually do as it tastes the best (sour cream mixed with bacon cracklings) but it's not for everyone, some like to keep it separate and eat just with sour cream or so.
And you missed some of the main traditional dishes. But I believe it's probably too much to try it all in one go... Almost impossible 😂
Anyway great video 👍 keep it up!

  • @UtamagUta
    @UtamagUta 4 года назад +12

I'd suggest to try out other Cepelinai next time around! The ones with curd (curd and fresh herbs - magic) filling is my favorite. Also, Balandėliai - much easier on a stomach. Then again, it's a variant of galubcy of all slavic countries, just ours are wrapped in a cabbage leaf.
If you feel adventurous while locked down at home, try making not only the lazy man, but the most traditional desert - take a fresh cucumber (short ones, with spikes) and dip it in honey. If Push comes to shove - to sugar. 👌 I was once watching a show of Victorian time cooking (English Heritage youtube channel) - and was appalled by cucumber ice cream never realizing that it was pretty much same thing i used to do at grandma's 😂

Lithuanian myself, but in my humble 18 years (abroad 13 years and counting) I have never tried kastinys.I got to next time visiting home. Loved the positivity and respectful approach.
''When someone is showing or sharing their local foods , they are showing you their culture'' - being respectful was really lovely to see , as often Americans have very exaggerated reactions.

Tinginys is basically just a kind of chocolate sausage with cookies crumbs. It's simple but one of my favorite desserts. While šakotis or shakotis for English speakers (which literal translation is closer to branch/branchy something like that instead of tree cake but i guess it doesn't matter) is usually big and you use hands to break "Branches" off to eat it.
Cepelinai vary from place to place, some people use boiled potatoes some raw and others mix two together, and to be fair i prefer raw or at least mixed ones to the boiled potatoes one.
Other than what you already ate in the video i would've loved to see you try Vėdarai and kugelis. Both are potato-based dishes but IMHO they are great and were worth ha try.

We used to have cepelinai only at church or a special event as it was quite a production to make them (think grating 100 potatoes and squeezing the starch out of them). One thing my family had a lot of was Kugelis. Of course, the sour cream and bacon was a staple side for all potato dishes.

  • @eagleowl9912
    @eagleowl9912 4 года назад

From the desserts I would mention famous "Grybukai" - bisquits with brown top and white bottom, which really look like mushrooms. They could be made of 2 types of dough. We, Grybukai lovers, know the best places to buy them 😃 it goes also for Šakotis - the more natural ingredients are used, the better Šakotis is.
Also, very typical dessert in Lithuania/Latvia is sweet curd with chocolate layer on top. You can by them in the grocery stores.
I think that our cakes (tortai) are good too. In grocery shops you can find many different, but the most famous probably are Medaus tortas (honey cake), Napoleonas, Dainava and so on.
As a Lithuanian living abroad, i think we have good variety of soups, I really miss them!
Herring is popular, "balta mišrainė" is an attribute of each family gathering at home - also made of simple ingredients. I love balandėliai (meat+rice rolled in cabbage) too.
Thanks for your wonderful videos and positive vibes! 🙂

Much on here is fancy stuff, I grew up with homestyle fare, guess my mom wasn’t that fancy, a lot of these things I have not tried during my life. But I saw simple things when I was in Kaunas 24 years ago.. My cold beet soup is much different, made the same as other Lithuanians I know here in America. Made with cucumber, scallions, chopped hard-boiled eggs, dill, of course the chopped up beets, and the beet liquid. Made a little sour with butter milk, yogurt, etc. Potato pancakes of course, kugelis. A salad made with boiled potatoes beets hard boiled egg pickles beans. Mixed with sour cream and mayo. That’s another big favorite. But the rest is all just too fancy for me being the child of Lithuanian immigrants back in the 50s. Other members of my family and friends do like a lot of other things that I don’t care for. Was never a big meat lover, and I’m meatless now. But of course pork is a very big thing.
