On my motorcycle trip this year from Western Washington to Glacier National Park and down to Yellowstone and back I would see those systems all over the place and I always wondered how they worked and how hard they were to move around. Thanks for the video.
I was just traveling west on I-40 and as I was passing the great plains I wondered how they moved those giant rain birds. Now I know and appreciate the hard work that farming is. Though I would find it satisfying to see stuff grow that I had something to do with bringing it to life, Good job on this.

In southern Alberta there are tons of old pivots sitting in corners , they are cheap enough you would never move one especially if you only needed a few towers for a small parcel of land. The ones we moved 30 years ago were 10 tower machines and it took a day to unhook move and hook up and not a fun day lol thanks for showing how easy yours is to move
Brings back memories. Worked on a farm and ranch in sw KS for 8 years taking care of 21 wells and 22 center pivots we had 1 T&L towable it was !@# to move. Thanks for sharing. Wish I was back on the farm.
North Texas Hay Yes it was. Just after I left there were some financial decisions that did not work out and pretty much closed the operation.. I enjoyed my time there they where and still are great people. God Bless you and your family.
Nice, that center pivots is widely used here in South Africa, we had one very strong borehole, we had a V8 Deutz engine on the pump to feed 13 sections of that sprayer.

Hi guys, I am in the process of trying to convince a couple irrigation manufacturers, Reinke, Valley, and Neilson, to come up with a wheel system designed like a dolled wheel that can turn at different angles and lock in if need be after you are done positioning it, so that you won't have to change the wheels every time. Hmmm seeing this up close now I think I see what drives them. I always thought it was water pressure to some sort of gearbox that drove the wheels, but I see there was some sort of shore power cord that looks to be running electric drive motors. This is all fascinating to me. And for you guys to have taken the time to show us how this is done, well just a big ol thanks! :)

My neighbor has one similar but the wheels on each tower turn so you don't have to install a separate wheel. They no longer move it and have since bought another center pivot but that was definitely interesting seeing how one is moved.
You guys make it look easy. But I know otherwise. My neighbor is wanting to sell me their pivot. Maybe, I could move it like this. Well, maybe not as it does have to come down the highway. You do have a slick system tho. Thanks for sharing. And that last comment of high maintenance just means being worth it.
We have enough rain up here in Arkansas where we don't have to use that equipment to grow hay, but it looks nice. I have seen it before in areas where they didn't get much. We have received plenty of rain all last year, and it is still coming down in large quantity in all areas of Southeast Arkansas and even though I don't do any farming, those who do have plenty of water to keep their crops wet, especially the rice farmers.
We just received more rain this past week and weekend, and had two days of dry weather, but is suppose to receive more later in my area. The Southern part of the state receive more rain than the rest of the state, and the water stands around longer and floods the region so easily. I worked for the Arkansas prison system for nearly twenty six years before retiring and watched how much cotton, and soybeans they grow around the state. There is plenty of hay grown in the state, and have plenty of hay being grown, and bailed here.
Sidney Mathious with as much hay that is being grown it's tough to get the price you need to stay afloat. That is the life of a farmer, feast or famine.
You are so correct and when I see trailers of hay leaving going to Texas and New Mexico I know the farmers here are filling a need and making money by selling their product on a market where it is needed.

Curious non farmer here- and I know this is an old video. But I'm curious about something. At the very top of that thing there is a rounded object that looks a little like an upside down bucket but is more rounded. It looks a lot like satellite receivers that you see on campers. It that indeed some kind of communications device (ie it receives a signal telling it when to turn water on or off or move, etc)? If not, does anyone know what it is? Thanks.

That is a lot of work. The entire assembly appears to be 300 ft long. It must be complicated to adjust/program the rig to keep it aligned in a straight line with each set of tires having to travel at different speeds.
Hello Jerry. I whatched you video. We working in Russia for Dealer of Reinke pivots. When we started this business 10 years ago, no US factories allowed to use more 1300 feet pivots. Now they offer to us 1570 feets (8 to 9 spans). So i think you have a lot place to go and tow ! Good to be farmer.
I an wondering why you don't use the forks on the tractor to lift the drive sections, so that the transport wheels can be lowered/raised? I like Hi-Lift jacks, but it would seem the hydraulic-lift forks of the tractor would be more efficient.

My god! That's a lot of work. A good used irrigation reel would cost 10K and the gun would go 150 feet each side. With the restrictor washers out you could put down an inch of water like nothing. Nice center pivot tho.
nice level rock free hay fields, what is there to complain about. In north east Pennsylvania it rains so much that the fertilizer washes away, crops become moldy with blights mildew and molds. Meteorologists say sunny for the next 7 days and in 2 days it is raining. Try to sell yellow moldy rained on hay.
a simple wrap no chain required( no offense to those that suggested) just a pull back straight, pulling like that screws up the elbow....over time or right now, think longevity.
WOW, not a bad move! but I snapped an elbow once doing that! always gotta chain that first pivot at the base to the second one so you dont break that first elbow!
You don’t necessarily have to change the oil in them you just have to check the level of the oil and you also check if there is water at the bottom of gearboxes and drain it if there is
Suggestion. Could you use the forks on the tractor to turn the removable wheels over, instead of jacking each one? If there are two people doing the move.
Richard Macleod I've tried it and it didn't work at all. You have to put into context I do this alone most of the time, and the jack is the best way to not cause damage to the pivot. If I welded a lifting point on the end I could possibly do it but it's just easier with the jack.

I would have added two wheels on the center too, and program the rest of the wheels to move at the same speed, and instead going on a circle will just go sideways. Obviously a portable power source would be required, so quite a hassle to set it up, but less work on the long run.

I never could figure what powers the structure, (electric? ) seems like it would be hard to synchronize them all to keep them aligned. Each set of wheels driven separately?
Lee Steele it's driven by 90 volt D.C. Motors. Each tower has a micro switch and a metal arm that trips the switch as it rolls keeping them all in line. It's really a pretty simple.

I know money is tight but couldn't you find some old wrecked semi trailers and take the landing gear off and center one leg and jack them supports up and down faster and without much effort? just a thought.
I like to tinker and try to make things better, faster and easier. I was just putting my two cents in. I have had 3 back surgery's and if I can help save another persons back I will try.
bwtupper unless I weld a pick up slot for the forks there is not a good place to pick it up from, the jack is the safest way to do it by yourself. In these bigger tractors you can't see where you are sticking the forks

Boehm Farm never broken anything moving it which is amazing, and the new holland has been a rock solid tractor for 9 years

Rightsideofthegrass axles for the drive wheels are to close to the cross beam to get my forks in.

Hell of a strain on the pivot elbow, I would have put a chain from the pivot to the first axle to take the load off of it.

You don’t necessarily have to change the oil in them you just have to check the level of the oil and you also check if there is water at the bottom of gearboxes and drain it if there is

You should use the tractor to to change the tires instead of a jack. It would a LOT less time.
bwtupper unless I weld a pick up slot for the forks there is not a good place to pick it up from, the jack is the safest way to do it by yourself. In these bigger tractors you can't see where you are sticking the forks
