Don't blame yourself, Matt. You're right that any company advertising certification under obsolete criteria needs to make that fact extremely clear. In any case, the previous data is still useful. Also, nice to hear the RPK mentioned, and yes, they do exist, even in the US civilian market, although they're all either kit builds or rare and collectable (e.g. FIME FM-RPK74-33). RPK-style rifles in 7.62x39 are much more common in the US, with the AES-10B being a reasonable facsimile of the Russian RPK, and much more affordable than imports like the FM-RPK47-33.
Yeah, how can a plate be "multi-hit rated" if a mere drop compromises the integrity, let alone stopping an entire round? I think there is a serious QC/inconsistency in the manufacturing, and they are trying to blame the drop test.
@ninjagold9244 You do realize these plates were originally designed before drop testing standards were implemented with the NIJ right? And the overrun plates are plates that the Ukranians ordered that were produced to those same pre drop test specs. High energy small impact is going to only compromise the area around the hit. A drop test is moderate energy impact but spread across an entire surface so it makes sense that a drop test would compromise an entire plate rather that a single hit compromising it.
@@Dark_Heart5580 So the plate material is weak enough that an impact on a fist-sized portion will propagate across the rest of the material, but a bullet strike will be contained? That doesn't make sense to me.
@@ninjagold9244 Its not a fist sized area tho. Its quite a bit larger. But either way, a larger area being struck means more areas that can have a micro crack or will have that additional stress put onto it that may weaken the material. A tiny impact from a bullet means less area that will be affected. The bullet impact effects a much smaller area than the drop onto face would. Its like if i took a screw driver and hit a wall. The screwdriver would probably go through the drywall but only put a hole in it. If I instead hit it with a sledge hammer its going to also put a hole in it but there will be noticeable cracks and damage to the surrounding wall.

If this testing tells us anything, it's that NIJ .06 and the new .07 standards should be a hard and fast rule for those purchasing armor. Compromising to a lower .04 standard just means you're giving away plate capability. These are the kinds of plates that propagate the FuddLore about ceramic armor being useless if dropped and can't take multiple hits. Another amazing informative vid for free 👍 Hey Buffman i know its probably not your area of expertise but i wanted to spread an idea i had and get different perspectives Here it is. Tungsten carbide rods can be bought online and sharpened/cut with small dimond saws and dimond files. My idea for the future is 3d printed bullet jackets (not sabots) for sharpened tungsten carbide rods (not unlike the shape from that AP incendiary), think of the 3d jackets as easter egg shells snapping together around the rods of a particular length & shape (although its more complicated then that). I've seen 3d bullets be shot out of guns a few different ways on youtube and i think they could hold together as long as they arent put through hight twist rate barrels like 8.6 blk. The tests ive seen also havent used the strongest 3d printing filiments which would increase the chance for success. If its possable people could make and reload their own AP ammo comparable to m995 & m993 along with other interesting rounds like subsonic 338 spectre or 300 blk or ap 9mm
The NIJ is much more precise and they don't put their tail between their legs when they issue a bad report. Save yourself a lot of worry and buy NIJ certified 0101.07 armor about to drop.
I feel everyone, manufacturer/retailers included, learned a lot here. Consumers should question everything before purchase and exercise caution if questions cannot be answered. Manufacturers/Retailers should be forthcoming with specific details about the products the market & sell to avoid looking shady. These specifically should have been marked on the plate and advertisements as “Not drop test rated” since so many plates are nowadays. As always, thanks Matt for the awesome work.
Oh the consumers questioned plenty. The real issue was TS claiming that; A) These plates were still currently certified, B) that these plates were the EXACT same spec as the 4SAS7s, when they aren't. TS couldn't even spell specification... Transparency is key when running a business, so sure making a note regarding Drop testing in the .04 standard would help. Primary step they could take in not looking shady would be not slapping shipping labels on every order a customer asked to return...
@@ViridianKolI agree with it you. I think TS basically took the position of “F off” to everyone about these plates. They could have even struck a middle ground and said hey we will hold the plates until the video of the retest comes out and then you can return them or take delivery.

What's the most economical and easiest rifle and round to obtain in the usa (overseas?) and defeat level 4 plates on the first shot? I'm guessing the cheapest .50 bmg rifle with ball ammo. Anyone else agree?
At what distance? Truthfully it's going to be 50 BMG. There's varying levels of construction and materials on hard armor, that make it a total roll of the dice to be able to do it on the first shot.
Probably not even ball ammo, you'd need .50 BMG AP or similar to consistently penetrate level 4 (or european equivalent) at most ranges. High quality level 4 is tough as hell.
@BuffRANGE 1 50 bmg from an m2 browning or m81 Barrett, it will defeat level 4 armor, lol. If it doesn't, which I have never seen a level 4 stop, blunt force trauma is a real thing, and you are dead either way. At $70-100+ it destroys most armor and it’s moot. I think I used it in the LAPG IV test I need to do.
It's a pretty uncommon round man. I did 8 years in the infantry with 3 combat deployments, and the only time I've ever seen them was pre 2014 in Afghanistan in belts for the M240. I never saw them for rifles at all
@@RickSanchez167 I got like almost 300 rounds of it 😅
All in boxes lol
@@BuffRANGE I don’t think you used it against the LAPG level 4 plate or atleast it wasn’t on video if you did. You used SMKH against the LAPG IV. Do you need me to send to donate you some m993 I acquired a small stockpile for SHTF when Trump got shot.
Another amazing informative vid for free 👍
Hey Buffman i know its probably not your area of expertise but i wanted to spread an idea i had and get different perspectives
Here it is.
Audio seems messed up for me
Close RUclips and open it back up! Fixed the problem for me
You're a good man doing honest testing. Progress not perfection Matt. We're all learning here.
The Ukrainians would be wearing this or steel. This is much better.
Bingo! These no question >> steel
LFG!
Nice work Matt, I trust you more than the NIJ.
The NIJ is much more precise and they don't put their tail between their legs when they issue a bad report. Save yourself a lot of worry and buy NIJ certified 0101.07 armor about to drop.
I appreciate that!
Armor manufacturers (especially reputable ones) already KNOW this. You don't give them enough credit. They are the experts in the field, not demo guys on RUclips. 🤣
It's better than nothing but get a better plate.
my deadly7 threat lvl 4 plates are multi hit capable these aren't great plates
Deadly Threat level IV Also has a foam ring, and imported from China. Also $200 a plate.
@BuffRANGE why are the Ukrainians using foam rings imported from chuna
@BuffRANGE mine are $400 a plate with made in America stickers and video from the manufacturer plant in Tennessee
@BuffRANGE I just googled it and mine are made in Tennessee there is a knockoff "deadly threat" made in China too damn gooks stealing our shit
@@odinisgod4577 deadly threat armor, or are you referring to another brand ? Those plates don’t say made in the US and their highest level IV is $200. Please let me know what model and company you’re referring too😊
What's the most economical and easiest rifle and round to obtain in the usa (overseas?) and defeat level 4 plates on the first shot?
With just ball and tracers, we shredded through a bmp within 50m to 100m in Bosnia. So I truly doubt it's even a dice roll, more like an act of G-d.
Cool a legit armor test, too bad you didn't do this one first. Hopefully everyone learned something from this experience. Thanks
Still waiting on the vendor, but CATI has some trauma foam that likely is the same thing I used here: catiarmor.com/cati-8x10-sapi-shape-trauma-pad/
Is this foam the drop protection or is it the backer that caught the 6.8?
