That program will still leave a LOT of junk all around macOS in places like /Library/Application Support/ and various cache folders that don't necessarily get removed after a reboot. Apple not actually showing or telling you that a program actually puts stuff all over your machine, does NOT mean that it actually doesn't. If you wanna ACTUALLY get rid of a program, I'd recommend AppCleaner (yes it sounds like a piece of sketchy software, I know. Just make sure you find the one with a "brown paper bag with recycling symbol on it" for it's icon.

I remember that Steam bug but it didn't affect any of my installations back then. Don't even think I was lucky, just never had any situation going on that could curse Steam at that time to mess up my installation.

The uninstaller looked for the original place you installed Steam but when it couldn't find the folder it would default to “/“ (root directory). So still a scary bug, but only affected a small number of user, 1 because it was only a Linux bug, and 2 you need to move the folder after installation.

In those cases, it was a good thing that games would come out later in Europe than the US (if the game itself isn't European). By the time Myth 2 and Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor were released here, the respective bugs were already fixed and we didn't have such issues. Nowadays, if something like that were to happen, we wouldn't get away so easily...

That bug also existed in an update to OS X (maybe it was Snow Leoprad?). If you had guest accounts turned on, all profiles would be wiped - not only the guest one. Happened to me
"windows gives a lot of freedom". As someone who has gotten viruses from trying to change my cursor, or the look of my UI back when, and nowadays is keenly aware of Linux, I can confidently say that windows is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to freedom, as well as security.

Adding things to the root directory is not the problem. I install games to my root directory all the time. The problem is a program being able to DELETE the root directory!
Even deleting everything in your root folder doesn't "destroy" your computer. You just need to reinstall or restore from a backup. It is still a bad thing, but not "unrecoverably destroyed."

It can detect and quarantine infected systems before they ever have the opportunity to get onto the network, which is of extremely high value to businesses.

in linux some flavors give you the with great power quotes and it makes me think of this, but also you need to be prompted with a password prompt if you want to do anything root wise in linux so i guess its a better warning system than how windows currently does it nowadays.
Windows can mimic this behavior, by the way. The problem is that it would require the user to first administer a “root” account with their own password, and only then create the common user that will be used. Of course, Windows wasn't designed for this and the implementation sucks, but it works.
The main problem with Windows of that era is that many programs for it required sysadmin privileges to run. In MacOS or Linux programs are made to run under an ordinary user account and as such they can't mess up the OS even when they contain faulty code.
If Bungie did this now, they'd tell you on their blog and that it'll be fixed next Tuesday but not notify folks that are in game with a notification and then because the game had a bad launch, madness happens, because they failed to notify the majority of the player base

I thought I was in one folder, turns out I was in my windows folder. I ended up trying to move my entire windows folder, thus breaking my machine and needing to reinstall windows again. Then there is the time when the FEAR demo came out, and I had a crap video card. It ran it, but barely. And I ended up destroying that video card because I pushed it too hard. Live and learn I guess.

Actually, on Macs, files were in 2 places. Data Fork & Resource Fork. Delete the Resource Fork & the Data Fork was unusuable.

The same problem was with a software called "Sierra Utilities" back then when Half-Life (the first) was distributed on CD before Steam.
