Thank you for showing the persephones. I made these a few years ago when I was starting to sew my own clothes and they failed. I have a hip 3 sizes smaller than my waist so the opposite challenge to you. I made shorts first which turned out great so when the trousers failed I was soooo dissapointed and thew them away. Now I'm a few years on, you've inspired me to get the pattern out again and have another go.
You will figure out the pants pattern- you have such awesome sewing skills that I really admire. I think your dress looks great. Once you style it, I bet you will like it better. Thanks for sharing your day with us. ❤❤❤❤
Aw Rachel it's not a fail ,it's a learning curve - in every sense of the word! 😂
I have every faith that you'll smash the pattern 💪
I have so much enjoyed watching you opening Ruan and Tamlyn’s calendar this year. Lovely earrings today. How lucky are you to have such great sewing friends. I also think your dress is fabulous ❤️
I’ve just watched a Cornelius Quiring’s vlog called ‘my secret to sewing better pants’ and thought of this vlog of yours … I love his channel, (and yours) … he’s concise, quirky and very knowledgeable …. Thought it might be of some use, he’s certainly helped me!
Oh I’ll take a look I’ve not heard of him thank you
You could add into the side seams of your trousers and cover that “add in” with a contrasting trim to look like tuxedo pants. You’ve probably seen the men’s tuxedo pants with the satin stripe down the outside of each leg! You’ve probably seen could dress that pair of trousers with a fancier top for an evening out without going overboard!
I like the idea that you don’t let things beat you. I love the cobra corsage dress on you. It is really pretty.
Ahhh i feel yr pain... chin up and just keep going... the cobra dress is beautiful ❤ yr hubby is a pet!
Oh, I just watched the rest of the vlog and you said you had a little cry! Oh, don't be too hard on yourself. I myself have had SO many fails recently, so I know how you feel. Once you get the fit right, you will love those pants.
Don't despair Rachel. You will solve the problem of those trousers!! I have flat thighs and hips and have real problems trying to get trousers that don't look too baggy on my thighs . We all have our body quirks 😂 ! xx
Love the dress, I hope you will enjoy wearing it, I loved the first one too. The pants will be great once you have the adjustments. Try not to be to hard on yourself, Rachel you are beautiful in and out. The calendar from your beautiful Northern Sewl Sister is great. So good to have such great friends as Ruan and Tamlyn.
The dress looks lovely on you, Rachel. The trousers shape is quite lovely and such a shame you are disappointed. I have the same attitude as you, don't let things beat you and no giving up. ❤😂🎉 🇦🇺
Love the dress and the style really suits you. You are absolutely right about the Raj dress not being empire. The colour and pattern is lovely though, maybe you might enjoy wearing it in the autumn.
As for the trousers you would certainly turn some heads in them, especially with your small waist. Love the fabric though.
Love the Ziggy Stardust earrings, very David Bowie. I was hoping you would have made the sequinned Coco dress.
I don't know how you do so many things so near to Christmas
Rachel its so weird watching hubby drinking his bear out of a box living in Australia would never happen lol always ice cold haha
Sorry beer not bear!
I did order the Raj pattern and I will add to the bodice too . I really like how it looked on you it was very flattering. Tall girl too with a lot no torso. Always love Vlogmas! Thanks for doing it every year
The dress looks great and Shane about the trousers. I have the opposite problem and need to grade out for the waist. I haven’t figured out how that will look yet🤪
Im looking forward to seeing your toile version of these trousers! It's an adventure being so creative!
I think the cobra corsage fabric looks stunning on you Rachel, maybe you’ll feel differently on another day with a bit of lippy, spay of your favourite perfume. I’m interested in the adjustments to the Persephone pants, I’m sure you’ll make that pattern work for you. They are my most comfy jeans 🥰
As a girl with curvy hips, I totally understand your frustration. I tend to stay away from pants altogether because of my big hips.
I have all the same problems with pants. Pant shopping is so depressing, nothing fits. You‘ll get there I’m sure
Oh, so sorry about your trouser fail. That is so annoying! I have a similar body shape, and I had the exact same problem on another trouser pattern. I kind of "saved" my wearable toile by just cutting side seams, inserting a strip in the side. Not at all the trousers I had in mind, but at least I could wear them :) You are a great sewist, and I'm sure you'll be able to sort the next pair out. Loving your vlogmas, btw.
Rachel, have you ever looked at the 'Top down, Center out' method for making trousers? I've heard good things about it. 😊
Oh.. I absolutely love your dress Rachel... You look fabulous in it 👌🥰. Hope you can get the fit right on the trousers 🙏💖😘
I do love the first dress better. I think the pattern suits you better, as well as the empire line.
Hi, trousers are so difficult aren't they! Here's a thought for you. So you could wear the green trousers, you could add a panel down the side seam area . You could use ribbon, braid or some fabric. Hope you can save them and good luck altering the pattern for next time. xxx
I feel your frustration.
I decided to take mostly sundresses on my winter vacation to Mexico because I find them cooler than shorts and tshirts.
I made a pair of paper bag shorts which would have been suitable for tromping through the jungles and climbing pyramids.
I finished them the day before we were leaving. When I tried them on I couldn’t do them up. My “bread dough” stomach made them too tight.
You could slice your trousers open where the side seam would be and insert a strip of fabric. Maybe even a plaid and have a Bay City Roller flashback. LOL!n
The trousers are a good shape on you so I would persevere. Don’t think you are alone. I always need at least one toile to fit trousers and even then I still think I need to do this and that once I’ve made my final pair. I have to steel myself to fit trousers.
I think on Anne Allen’s blog she has a post about grading these specific pants for a several size difference between waist and hips… you might check that out to help with fitting them
Hi Rachel, With regards to the trousers, could you not rescue them with a side stripe insert in either a contrasting colour or contrasting fabric but in the same colour (like a dark green satin or velvet)? You could perhaps taper in at the top of the stripe so it didn't add to the volume in the waist. I think that might look quite nice as a feature, too 😊
I really like the dress. I'm not a cobra corsage fan at all, snakes being a no for me, but the dress looks lovely. The other did as well.
I like the dress Rachel and the pants. A great color for the holidays
If anyone can make the trousers work you can. I would make the size for my hips and add a few darts to shrink the waist? I have the opposite problem and have to grade to make waist bigger which is tricky sometimes getting facings and waistbands to fit exactly. We all have our unique body shapes but I understand it is not always easy to love what we have- my nemesis is my tummy. Hope you felt better after having a little cry- sometimes that is what it needs. I am sure Martin cheered you up- he is so lovely ☺️. Lynne
Oh and had a real giggle at Ruan feeling a bit delicate 🤣😂
I really do understand the frustrations around your shape and fit being difficult, but you do have a fabulous shape! x
I'd be tempted to add a side seam in!!! Edited to add....you've just said the same! 🤣 I like your dress even though you're unsure, try it with a wide obi/corset style belt maybe??
I wonder if a different style of pattern would make fitting easier. I’m thinking of the current barrel leg trend such as the Friday Pattern Co’s Sera pants.
Hi Rachel, the dress looked lovely. The trousers shape on your body looks really flattering. I remember Ruan having a similar issue with trousers and she mentioned that she sized up on the side seams and decreased in the crotch area. Where I think for your pattern you will need to increase slightly on both areas. I think you are very close because you have managed to fit into them. All the best x
💙💙
I find it extremely difficult sewing pants as I am a pear shape too!!! I've made pants 3-4 times and have passed on every pair!!!!!
👋🏾 Columbia, MD! ❤️ Your Vlogmas shows!
How about creating side seams and a strip of the same fabric with machine embroidery (tuxedo style) , giving you more width for the waistband and fly application.
I think adding a wide belt would define your waist in the new dress, which is gorgeous. Put the trousers back on and mark with chalk the area that needs more ease (at the side where the side seam would be). Add that ease at front and back seams, extending the crotch curve front and back to fit. That should work. Hope this helps. I admire you so much!
Shame about the pants, but the dress is lovely! Well done!
I was just wondering if on that trouser pattern you could do the same as for a big biseps adjustment on a sleeve? Love watching your vlogmas vlogs as well as your normal ones.
Hi Rachel. I've been enjoying you Vlogmas (and Pipermas and Beermas) very fmuch, so thank you!
Ggrrr -- I'm sorry it's been a frustrating day, but I so appreciate the fitting issues you are having; I have them too and don't know any pattern company that makes pants patterns that really fit us with pear shapes. I've been hunting for years. What works best for me is to use stretch woven fabric and significantly alter (or make my own) pattern. For fitted pants to be able to move with me and be comfortable, they have to have 30% stretch crosswise but also be able to stretch vertically in the upper back for sitting. My compromise is to use 30% stretch babywale corduroy with a yoga waistband out of athletic knit. I also gave up on trying to get single back leg pattern pieces to go out around my hips and thighs and back in for legs without creating a saggy seat, so now have curving seams down the middle of the back legs -- more space at hips and upper thighs, plus at the calves, and less below those areas without expecting the side seams to do it all.
For the Persephone Pants, if you have a green ponte or stretch corduroy fabric or can get some, you could add a strip down the sides and make it a design feature. This might make the pants move and mold to your unique and amazing body even though the main part of them is a non-stretch woven fabric. Best of luck in finding a great solution, Antonia
I found your butt adjustment video very helpful. I think that was the first video of yours that I watched because I was trying to solve that issue. Cobra corsage fabric. Love/hate relationship. It is a beautiful fabric print. It is not beautiful on me. I feel like I am wrapped up in my Grandmother's living room curtains, and now that is all I can think of when I see that fabric. I feel much the same about big leafy prints. Reminds me of barkcloth curtains we had in the 1960's, along with cut leaf Monstera house plants that were popular then. I still have some photos of the curtains in old family Christmas pictures. Other people can rock these prints, just not me. ( I was a little kid)
Rachel I love your dress it looks great also could you put elastic in the waist at back of your pants to bring in x
Don’t despair that a pattern doesn’t fit your body type, you’ve a lovely figure and many would kill for your long, healthy, beautiful body! You might try splitting the green trousers down the side seams and putting a strip down each side, that can look very intentional on trousers. Also no idea what you see when you try on the dress but I think it suits you and looks great. Chin up buttercup! You’re doing great.
I agree trousers with a stripe are very popular at the moment could you try that. They are so nearly perfect x
You have the same body shape as me. I had made the Cashmerette Ames jeans out of stretch denim and those were the first pants that have ever fit me. Their size chart is great. I haven't tried the Meriam trousers yet. I am curious to see how your calico pair comes out.
Rachel, you’re not alone, I’ve got curvy hips and booty, sometimes I just don’t believe the size difference between the two! I have to admit to staying well clear of making trousers, unless they’re wide legged PJs!!!! 🐾🐾
I thought the dress looked lovely (and whisper it quietly I'm not a fan of that fabric) but I agree I like the empire line one more. You sew so quickly! I feel quite inadequate but then remind myself I don't have a dedicated sewing space etc etc excuses, excuses. Still as long as we get there in the end.......😁
🐯
Hi Rachel! What you have with your hips, I have with my bust. I need a size 18 for my bust, but then a size 12 for the rest. Horrible! This puts me off making coats and jackets. But well.... I have trousers and skirts galore! What if you would split the truset in the middle and add a couple of inches from there? I mean where the side seam would normally be? Toile it first. Bit ai think you might be lucky there. Have a great evening, and I look forward to seeing your vlogs! xxx
Just a thought on the trouser.....could you do a similar type of adjustment to a full bicep adjustment on a sleeve?? Also on the overlocking of the squishy fleece, i had a similar problem and i adjusted the differential feed which solved the slipping. I did find the knife got blunted quickly though.
You could spit the pattern add where you need the fullness kind of like a full bust adjustment
Anna Allen has adjustments for the pants on her website. I had the same problem as you and I got a decent fit, but I used stretch twill also.
Have you tried a wide leg Ponte trouser? I love stretch trousers. You have a perfect pin-up figure!
Yeah I’m not keen on them to be honest I prefer a woven trouser
grey top to match those green pants... white cowl scarf 😊
😂😂😂Ruan!❤❤
Can you make the best size for your hips and add darts to make waist smaller?
Have you tried the nancy zieman method for resizing patterns? It's the pivot and slide method
Could you fit the pattern to your hip measurement and put in darts for the waist?
Rachel have you had a look at the trouser fitting (top down centre out) crooked hem RUclips channel. 😊
Would love to know what type of coffee your are drinking. Looks good.
David Bowie earrings.⚡⚡
the dress looks realy lovely on you
Can you rescue your green pants by putting a dart of extra fabric on either side of the pants waist to widen the pants and two under either side your bottom or the seat of the pants???
Extending the crotch curve helps with full thighs and scooping the curve will help too. I know there is a way to modify the pattern ! There is a solution, I know it…. I wish I knew it lol 😂 but I would try reaching out to them and see if they can help you. I feel disappointed for you with the pants. I had this issue with the Winslow’s and honestly I just had to put them away for a while. I’m determined to tackle them in 2025!
Is it the colour that is putting you off? You have so many beautiful bright fabrics that look great on you, perhaps this colour isn't for you. The dress is beautiful.
I think I'd contact the pattern designer to mention the bodice, as I think maybe there is a pattern error she needs to re do
I’ve avoided making pants because my waist is larger than my hips.
Hi Rachael. I'd love to see a full but adjustment if you are able to film that.
Could you do to fit your hips and darts to get to waist size
What stunning earrings. The Raj looks great; I like the slightly high waistline and the color really suits you. Your hips aren't massive! This pattern just doesn't suit your body shape as it is. Do your adjustments and it will be fine.
💙🌈🧶🍓
Ah Rachael, nothing wrong with your hips.(we are just shapely women), the dress looked lovely.☺️x.
Trousers in a heavy ponte would be comfortable.
Amazing shape on u just raging they feel too snug. Defo try again cos I think if u get them right they will look great on your lovely shape ❤
Not keen on that colour on you loved the other one you made
Nice to know you have the odd failure size wise as I get plenty 🥴
My opinion only, the other dress colour is more stylish 🤐🤐🤐
You know human nature... if we have naturally straight hair we wish it was curly and vice versa. Girlfriend, you may not like your hips, but you've got the butt we all want. (Alas, I am a card-carrying member of the curly haired, flat butt society.)
Honestly I can’t believe people pay for butts, I’d pay to have mine deflated
Sorry the trousers made you sad. 😢 Isn’t it rubbish that we’re conditioned to feel bad about our bodies. It’s the pattern though, not you. Having no side seam means you lose the opportunity to create shape so you maybe either need to add a seam, as you suggest, or at least a dart. A pattern can never work for every body shape and you said yourself that trousers are a ‘mare to fit. ❤ Also, loved you ‘telling tales’ on Ruan! 😂
I have massive hips and fitted pants are a challenge. That cobra fabric is beautiful. You could just raise the waist and have a shorter dress. Show some leg.😂
