I was living in Auckland in 2000, when Team NZ successfully defended the cup and the whole of Auckland became yacht crazy. I used to wander around the racing village in my lunch hours and was able to go out on spectator boats for a couple of the races. That is also when I first fell in love with super yachts. It was during the last America's Cup that I discovered all the RUclips channels that allowed a glimpse of life on board these beautiful boats and I have so enjoyed this insider's view of race day on board with you today. Thanks for that.

When I was a kid, I passed the USA boat for the America's Cup ("Stars and Stripes" was the boat, circa 1985ish) heading out for a practice session. I remember it was impressive seeing the entire team going out. Just as you said. Just really cool to see. Oh, and underway just means you've weighed anchor. Making way is the boat is going somewhere by propulsion of any means.

As I said before, you are so fortunate to be right in the thick of the America's Cup action. Yes, Mr. Bertarelli, the owner of Vava and the main backer of Alinghi may not be ecstatic about his boat's performance, but the boat is reasonably fast and not out of contention at all. I am rooting for American Magic, but I am very pleased to see that at least four of the America's Cup competitors are quite even in terms of boat speed. The matches seem to be all coming down to the starts or to boat handling mistakes. I hope the owners or charterers of Espiritu Santo are thrilled by the America's Cup action. it is great, even though it seems utterly daft to be spending around $100 million on a racing campaign just for bragging rights and possession of a gracelessly ornate silver trophy.

At least one comment proves your point Tristan that all billionaires have critics. The time just hanging out on the bridge, watching the race brings back so many memories of 1980 as I previously mentioned. As more spectators show up, the trip back to port will take longer and become more and more chaotic. It's all part of the America's Cup experience. This is another great video Tristan, keep em coming. Your grandfather rocks!

A ship making way is moving through the water. If it is underway, but not moving relative to the water it is NOT making way. However, let´s say your ship is drifting, no sails or engine on, and the wind is pushing you through, emphasis on through, the water you are actually making way. Since you are moving relative to the water you can steer the vessel, it doesn´t matter that the motion is caused by wind against the hull instead of wind against sails.

A vessel making way is a vessel that is moving through the water and responding to its rudder. This can also be described as being underway, which is a nautical term that means the vessel is not anchored, aground, or berthed alongside. When a vessel is underway, there is enough water flowing past its rudder to allow it to be steered.
When a vessel is making way, it will display its stern light and side lights. If it is not making way, it will only display all-round red lights to indicate that it is not moving.

The way I think about "underway" is not attached to the ground by any means. So that would include aground, at anchor, at a mooring buoy, alongside a pontoon (which is ultimately attached to the ground) etc...
You are making way if your motion relative to the water is non zero. That is to say that you are underway and under some means of propulsion; be it under sail or engine.

A vessel is "making way" when it is moving through the water, propelled by machinery, sails, or any other means, and has enough maneuverability to take action to avoid collision. Essentially, it's not just drifting or at anchor but actively navigating.
