Bought mine 10 years ago and it the very best thing I have ever owned. I hike every day and it has never let me down. Lovely review to a wonderful device. Never go away without it. people say it is not a good satnav but it saved our bacon on a road trip to Munich when the car satnav imploded taking us right to the door.
Great review. Your demo of the digital compass just saved me a hundred bucks. I was convinced that I needed to go for a 30 for the compass, but now I'm getting a 20. Thanks!
The 20 is my best buddy on my hikes..I do save all to my computer under "Base camp" I so enjoy all the different aspects of the 20 , and probably used allmost all the features....wish you had been here when I got mne..I had to go by trial and error. But did it and im happy,, thank you for THIS video.
Sealed the deal for me buying one tomorrow. I had the Etrex Vista HCX for a lot of years but it just started showing the random turn off symptoms so I'm just going to replace it. thank you
Hey man I just bought the etrex 20 and its great. It lacks of the touch screen but for the price its awesome. For routing its great too, it calculates and re-calculates really fast. so im super happy with it. thanks again for this review.
The etrex UI is fine. At any point you can choose, Where to?, Tracks, Current Track, and "Go" to TracBack®. If you were navigating something else at the time, just choose "Find another" at "Where to?" and follow the rest of the sequence.Track Manager works just like Route Planner for saving, saving a reverse copy, renaming or deleting. If you come across a previous track, use Where to?, Tracks, and select the original track to go to the end or the reversed version to go to the start. Easy.
In one of many applications, the altitude is useful in finding the elevation of flowing water so as to identify gradients of head. This is of importance when planning a hydroelectric facility to power the farm...and more.
Yes, it does. I like to use a program called Tyre to Travel. It's open source and it lays your track over Google Earth...and much more. Just search tyre to travel and it will come to the top.
I'm looking at either the Etrex 10 or 20 for use on my fishing kayak. I want my GPS and FishFinder to be separate so that if for example my Fishfinder battery fails, I can sill use my GPS to get to reef marks etc. The price difference over here isn't so big, so I may just pay the extra for the colour screen. Thanks for your review, it's very helpful.
Superb review, thanks. I checked so many forums, first wanted to buy the Etrex 30, too many firmware issues tho. Now, I almost decided to buy the 20, but the issue that you mention here of the joystick living a life of it's own when you put it in your pants pockets made this a no-go as well. Bummer. Hope they will come with new models of the Etrex line soon, fixing this issue as well.
Yes - good to have a GPS compass as a backup for a normal magnetic compass in case there's something in the environment or rocks that is skewing the magnetic field in a particular area.
I need help in setup , all I want to do is set a way point at the dock , then go out on jet ski and return . I don't see the lil line to follow home it shows me the big map of Florida only
I have to concur with the author's comments on an electronic compass. I spent 23 years in the US Army Infantry and find it a whole lot easier to break out my Lensatic compass than rely on one on the GPS. I guess some would find it useful, but having a compass, barometric altimeter and the ability to transfer things wirelessly to another piece of equipment is not worth an extra $100, especially when the actual GPS FUNCTIONS of the two units is identical.
Good review! They don't tell you that you have to have a paid Geocaching account to get all of the information from the Geocaching website. I am thinking of buying one of these soon. Not only for caching but also for navigation while on my motorcycle. Looks like you found your way through Mercer Island without getting lost though. Wouldn't want to get stuck there. ;-)
Great video. About the track issue, I hope Garmin will go back to the old system of transfering tracks and being able to edit them on the map which you can't do with the etrex 20. I hate that you have to use Basecamp to retrieve waypoints you mark on the device. Other than that, it tracks very well (made one very small hiccup today).
yes looks good I have a old garmin 12XL I use compass .and my gps I find that if I am walking in the woods at night going back to my camp site I need to walk abount 2 to 3 mph to get my gps compass to work .so I have my compass as back up . as its hard walking cutting your way in the bush and at night looking where your walking and using the gps at the same time
Many of the lakes here are extremely low and I want to mark the exposed structure before they are covered with water. Will the eTrex20 mark these so I can later go back and find these when I'm in a boat?
excellent review, I am familiar with Garmin products, I used to have several models, I'm currently looking into something smaller to carry with me on my fatbike adventures. Thanks for your review.
Great review! Might you be able to say if this unit is better than the Garmen Vista HCx? I would guess that it is but what you said about the joystick mucking things up ... and draining the battery makes me wonder. I'm really looking forward to getting it as it should be great fun to use when I go out metal detecting for gold and/or shooting (providing the joystick doesn't turn things into a nightmare).
Any chance you could go into the "trace back your current route" part a little bit more in depth? I see what you did but I can't get mine to trace the current route in a different color. Looks like your "track back" route turns pink over the "current track" line. Thanks for any help you can provide.
@chefrd2000 Thanks for the quick response, I asked this because theres a friend buying me one in the U.S, so i have one chance to buy the right one. a new et 20 where I live costs like 3 times more, and im not spending that much. I want a do it all gps, im also hoping the road navigation feature comes out good enough. I know I need to buy garmins maps for that so thats no problem. I dont know if there are any free maps that work with road navigation. 20 is the way to go no need for barometer
Just got the 20 as a birthday gift!! Can't wait to mount on the atv and explore. I didn't get the topo maps with my unit can anyone tell me if they are available?
Great video, well done - so thanks. One thing I have not found yet is the best way to follow a track stored by someone else. Easy enough to import them as .gpx files but on my first go, my current location just wandered off the screen all the time. Is there a way of just keeping your location at the screen centre? PS: I agree about the need to lock the joystick!
does this device or the etrex 10 show your actual path instead of simply showing everything as the crow flies? i want to use it for hiking and canyoning, but if it doesnt track my path accurately its pretty pointless.
How does map loading work? Do you HAVE to use the pricey ones from garmin? Or can you just find whatever online and load them in? And how much maps can you get on there? Like after one detailed map is the thing full? Best review! i went through 5 "reviews" where it was basically an unboxing and people showing how to use the joystick...
change to the predefined profile Geocaching, then go to Map. There it is set up with the compass. Press menu, where you can see the settings: data fields > in case of no navigation: compass.
Hi Thanks for the video, nice job explaining things. I'm considering buying one of these units and my main use for it would be for fishing, summer on water and winter on ice. So I can go back to my special spots I found. Do you think this would be an adequate device for me?...
What would it be like using this device as is for cvcling in Japan (with no Japanese maps installed)? I mean what could and couldn't I do with it? I'm mostly interested in tracking the course, speed, and uploading it to keep a history of where I cycled. Could my uploaded data be overlayed on some kind of map like Google maps?
great overview. I bought a '20' for hiking, and just getting used to it. Wish you had spent a little time going over some of those 'harder to find' commands like 'backtrack' and others. One question though, how do you set the volume level of the alert alarms and 'wake up' tones?
If I put us topo and the city maps on my device can I change what map it displays? Also can I get it to show satillite imagery of the place I'm hiking? Sat and topo is a great combination.
can you enter 8 or 10 digit grid coordinates in this gps???? If im in grid location "A" can I enter in another grid location "B" and have it get me there? Or does it only work with latitude and longitude degrees???
I know this video has been here for so many years.. I'm trying to figure how to route me back command..can u explain which command to choose. All i see is " view map " and then it route back
i'm basically looking for a hand held car gps with all the roads/cities/poi for the us/canada loaded in. would you recommend this and if so, how much (approx.) would it cost total with all the maps loaded? if not, is there another good one that does what i'm looking for?
I'm looking at one of these for my 13 year old boy, mostly for hiking and geocaching. This would be his first GPS. Do you think it's simple enough for a newbie with no GPS experience.
Hi there, I've never left a comment before so this should be interesting. I am looking to get a garmin GPS, but I am currently stuck between the one in this review and the eTrex 10. i predict you can easily reach the 4way joystick as left handed person when you have normal hands. All those modern electronic devies are too small and made for childrens hands. But i'd recommend spending 50 more bucks and get the Garmin Oregon 450 anyway which is a modern touchscreen device

hi, i'm thinking of buying a etrex 20 for mountainbiking, want to use the device to ride tracks and routes from other people (downloaden from internet) does any one of you has some experience with this with the etrex 20? it's also possible to uploads maps a read in the specs, can some tell me more about this map upload feature ? what kind of maps can i upload?
I bought my first GPS device Garmin eTrex30x. So far I'm just amazed how this device works well but I got to the point where I need more data that I can't get right out of eTrex. I'm a MTB cyclist that likes to explore new paths and this is the main reason I bought this device. I got curious and started thinking about steeps and agnles so if I see a trail that goes over the hill and I'd like to know how steep it is so I could check out my current position altitude and subtract it from the highest point of the path and now I have a cathetus of a regular triangle and for the hypotenus dimension I would use distance between the two points and then I'm measuring the Sin alpha = opposite cathetus divided by hypotenus = a / c = 43m altitude dvided by 363 m distance = 0,115702479 which in calculator INV 0,115702479 SIN = 6,6441° TAN 11,6 % and get the angle in grades and percentage. The problem is that I can't figure out how to get this information directly from eTrex and I can't make eTrex calculator to do this math - it just displays error message or if I input 0,115702479 SIN TAN I get a not so accurate result. i got the etrex 30 and i spent an additional 100 dlls.for the us maps plus another 100 for mexico topo map......already over 500 dlls. but if one day it saves my life ?the it will b worthed every single peny.
how do you get the screen with the compass and the track showing??? i cannot work out how to do it on my etrex 20, can you tell me the secret ;) cheers
I erased my past comment :D cause it was not necessary. So thanks for this vid, it helped me a lot, so ill be buying the etrex 20 :D. I only have one question, and it is about the joystick, I saw another video of a guy complaining about it and he tells that the joystick makes way-points when he carries the gps in his pocket. So is it that bad? Thank you
Dam it will anyone show us, how to input a GPS Coords into these things not way points also not interested in calculator and god dam alarms, what fool pays Hundreds of dollars for that useless shite, every smart phone already has that stuff I give you gps co ords and you find it
Most sites will give you the option for downloading the GPS routes in .gpx format. Simply download it, and put it in the .gpx folder when you connect it to your computer.

Super helpful. Pragmatic evaluation. For these "obsolete" devices, your review is a gift that keeps on giving to aftermarket buyers...
Nothing obsolete at all, infantile fad boy.
Sealed the deal for me buying one tomorrow. I had the Etrex Vista HCX for a lot of years but it just started showing the random turn off symptoms so I'm just going to replace it. thank you

one more question. what screen mode is this in? I don't remember seeing a line behind the arrow in my screen? any help will be appreciated.

If I'm just interested in way points and getting back to a specific location after spending a few days deep in the sticks is the eT10 sufficient?

Im also a pilot, is this good for flying? Way point to way point, etas, ground speed, gps track, all that jazz?

Hi, what is the maximum capacity of the memory-card supported by Etrex-20? 128GB, 256GB or else?
I believe it's about 2GB.
can you enter 8 or 10 digit grid coordinates in this gps???? If im in grid location "A" can I enter in another grid location "B" and have it get me there? Or does it only work with latitude and longitude degrees???
that unintentional button pushing of the unit while it's in the pocket is a problem.....
I know this video has been here for so many years.. I'm trying to figure how to route me back command..can u explain which command to choose. All i see is " view map " and then it route back
THANK YOU! That was extremely helpful.
سلام جی پی اس گارمین خیلی خوب عالی ببخشید این دستگاه موجودات زیر زمین هم نشان میده ما به یه اندازه از تصاور متوجع شدیم ممنون کمکم کنی
i want to know if i can use this model in topography, plz answer me

Im an avid hiker and would also like to use the unit for geocaching which I'm just starting to get into. I would also imagine that considering my career choice (wildlife and natural resource conservation) I will end up using it at work.
Do you have any opinions on which would be better suited?
Thanks so much for the great review!
Nice review, nicely done, thank you. I will consider this unit based on your review. Thanks
Great job. Very informative and well done. thanks you.
can you please elaborate on how it's hard to load saved tracks?
Can you you this gps on a bicycle (no off-road, just on the street) so that it gives turn by turn directions and avoid highways etc?
what is the device like with the blue charts in it , is it worth while buying them
Thanks for the great review. I saw 'sight N go' in your demo. Is it really in the etrex20? I cannot find in mine.
i'm looking for a cheaper gps for goin out fishing and finding my way to lakes in the woods, is this a good choice?
How is to show Compass and Map Simultaneusly? Can you respond.
I recently bought an etrex30 is my first Outdoor GPS I think has all the capabilityes I will need. Thank you, nice review and video.
Does this unit allow you to download a GPX file from the track log to a computer?
Thanks for a great review.
There is a demo for the birdseye on etrex 20 I seen it when I first got the GPS now I cant remember where I found it on the menu. can someone tell me how to pull this up?
Where did you get the screen protector and how much was it?
Do you happen to know how compatible this unit is with a Mac?
i predict you can easily reach the 4way joystick as left handed person when you have normal hands. All those modern electronic devies are too small and made for childrens hands. But i'd recommend spending 50 more bucks and get the Garmin Oregon 450 anyway which is a modern touchscreen device
does the Garmen e trex 20 use a quad helix antenna?
This is a good tutorial.
chefrd2000-Nice cohesive, applicable review. I'm looking for a GPS that will work well for hunting. I need to return to exact locations. I also would like to enter Long and Lat and find property survey pins. How is this unit for those functions. I have never used a hand held GPS before, only lensatic compasses.
Many thanks for this video!
Rookie also here, kind of like mrarthurallen1, 8 mos. ago. Maybe same gene pool? HaHa.
Great comments too. Reading thru them may just shorten the learning curve!

Good review of the unit. Thanks for the help.
How can I do land mapping with this device
Nice review! thanks!
Thanks very much. Helpful!
Thanks for the overview!
how can I export my hike to Google Earth?
Download Basecamp for Mac. Not sure about the microsoft version. Go google it.
how dp you download maps into the device?

*im sorry but i will take iPhone 7 which has dual band navigation (GPS+Glonass) which is equivalent to WAAS GPS in terms of accuracy, and a ton of absolutely brilliant applications, with digital compases that are super precise, with barometers, altimeters, in airplane mode and power saving mode, an iPhone 7+ GPS will work for days*
Applications I use: *Avanet*
*Gaia GPS*
*iArrow*
*iArrow Lite*
*Spyglass*
*Track Kit Pro*
*maps.me*
All of these can download any kind of map you want and work offline in airplane mode, some of these do not use maps, like iArrow is a brilliant "point and shoot"you can set the bearing and it will track the diversion from course, with quick switch between phones compass and calculated gps compass
Plus Apple is adding a feature to slow down iphone 7s in the next release. To save battery life not to get you to buy a new phone.
i got the etrex 30 and i spent an additional 100 dlls.for the us maps plus another 100 for mexico topo map......already over 500 dlls. but if one day it saves my life ?the it will b worthed every single peny.
Great review, thank you!
Thank You very much!
I need a navigation device I can attach to my bicycle sometimes and my car sometimes.
good video, thank you !

I only have one question, and it is about the joystick, I saw another video of a guy complaining about it and he tells that the joystick makes way-points when he carries the gps in his pocket.
So is it that bad?
Thank you
yes my gps garmin as no map but good gps but it is 12 years old but never let me down
Dam it will anyone show us, how to input a GPS Coords into these things not way points also not interested in calculator and god dam alarms, what fool pays Hundreds of dollars for that useless shite, every smart phone already has that stuff I give you gps co ords and you find it
Most sites will give you the option for downloading the GPS routes in .gpx format. Simply download it, and put it in the .gpx folder when you connect it to your computer.
why is this guy using a Bluetooth mic?

Don't get these. They last less than 6 months and then the screen dies and customer support won't have anything to do with you .
