Play this video with the score in front of you and you will realise how difficult this piece is and how perfectly it is played. In parts the left hand is almost impossible to play at such a high speed. Once again, a magnificent performance.
Her technique is always so precise and calculated and yet she still manages to get an incredible amount of emotion and fluidity into her playing. It's amazing; I aspire to be as perfectly composed as Valentina.
that final second when she just breathes and she makes a sigh is my very personal enjoyment..reminds me how much a person must study to be so perfect..
How can I explain anybody, how are you make me feel when I listen and see you play this way? Thank you Valentina Lisitsa! I love you!!! If you come to my country, Uruguay, some day, I'll stay near to you in the auditorium, first of all! You are THE BEST!
All of a sudden, I became a fan of classical music. As long as it is as good as this. To me, as a newbie, piano is the favorite instrument. Wish I could play it. In the meantime, I listens to Valentina Lisitsa. It's incredible satisfying to finally discover classical music. Thank you.
Thank you Valentina and Beethoven You two really help me in the most difficult and stressful moments that I'm suffering I don't know what kind of power you have, but it's so strong. You cant imagine how it affects me When I pass these difficult days,I may enjoy your performance fully and perfectly, for you are deserved so.You are doing magic!
Dear Valentina, I love you! This is one of the most original interpretations of the Appassionata I have heard. You dynamic changes are so beautiful and well thought out. A stunning performance, indeed, BRAVO!
Well balanced performance. Beautiful tone, clarity and expression. Played with just the feeling needed for this piece. I enjoyed it immensely and your playing is just mystifying. Awesome ... five stars in my rating.
Im going back here very often to listen to that. Whatever you say, Beethoven was a dark man... ;-) Genius both at composer's and performer's side, I wish I could play half as good as V someday, got every Beethoven's piano sonata notes, but not up for trying to play those yet. Unstoppable performance!
Thank you Valentina for uploading this piece, I really think it's been waiting for two centuries to be performed by you. I'm eager to listen to your "Moonlight" Op.27-2, specially the 3rd movement. If you play it like that I believe I won't need anything else to feed my soul.
I regard this a first rate performance of what is, from the musical, technical, emotional and psychological viewpoints, one of the most challenging works in the piano literature. It is difficult for the most competent musician to bring to this piece something fresh -- which after all is the reason for public performance. But to my mind Ms. Lisitsa does precisely this, and in a way that was for me electrifying. I could easily imagine the composer standing to her side, nodding his approval.
A feast for both ears and eyes. Seldom we are graced with a genius with great looks too. Valentina, you're the good Lord God's gift to us. Dolgoi ziznju i stjastje dlja Tybja i Alexei.
Bravissimo !! I'm sure Myra Hess is applauding you from heaven with a standing ovation ! I find the fine tuned movement of the muscles in Ms Lisitsa's hands& arms to be galvanising. They work in perfect coordination like those of a fine race horse. Aah ! the lovely locomotion :)
You are so deeply involved with the piano and the music and it feels so so intimate and I feel I shouldn't be watching this. But I just can't resist and I get into a deep striking mood.
devilish imagination, transcendental technique: she delivers every passage with utmost ease, natural directness and extreme intensity of expression. I agree it is in the line of backhaus, pollini, Gilels, richter as mentioned below
Jonathanwong....this song reaches down on the inside of you and touches that spot! I understand what you are talking about. I love Appassionata so much!
In my humble opinion, none of her later recordings of the Appassionata come close to this one. I've heard her play it live, but it still doesn't hold up to this performance. And the strangest thing is, I don't even know what's so much better here: it's not perfect, she's made quite a bit of mistakes, but the combination of speed, ferociousness, wildness and sheer power in this performance leaves me speechless like no later performance of hers ever did
You definitely are a living legend, a future's goddess. The life ur living should be dedicated in order to get higher levels for piano, but it's not fully guaranteed as well. Being like Valentina might require another extra lifetime.
I was amazed by his Beethoven too. I had never heard him play like that. It was, indeed, magical. Not like anyone else, except maybe Richter, who is my all time favorite for Brahms and Beethoven's sonatas. Lisitsa seems to be emerging as a major 21st C. pianist. Have you heard her new collaboration with another young violinist? Impressive.
This and Barrenboim's rendition are my favorites. I never before heard one I could even compare with his, but I think she is, if anything, even better!
of course dear david a channel like yours deserve our attnetion cause of the great taste you have for music. anna braizl or nateetan you will always read my comments on yours. be blessed for what we make to our lives
Valentina Lisitsa has the ideal shaped hands for the piano - large with long fingers. Her hands are larger than some male concert pianists - Josef Hofmann,Shura Cherkassy,Isadore Epstein and Adolf Hallis come to mind. Josef Hofmann's hands were so small,he had to have Steinway make several pianos for him with the keys shaved a fraction of an inch. I once saw Cherkassy in a hotel reception area in Zambia and was amazed at the small size of his hands. Nature has indeed blessed Valentina.
Amazing that it's a woman who plays this strong masculine piece. A lot of pianists muddle this piece but she does it with intensity and clarity very well, in fact, masterfully. I didn't particularly like the begining but the playing went better afterwards. This Valentina Lisitsa must from a Baltic country or Russia? I wonder if she knows that the piece is a battle war cry to Napoleon's grand army. Anyhow she'sworthy enough that I'll check out her other playing.
Its simply memzering watching you play this piece. I happen to be in love with this particular movement. I wish I could still play as well as you. Simply beautiful
Anyone can play this stuff but she is so dynamic. It feels like my head is inside the piano. Sometimes she it a little too aggressive with everything ringing out all at once but the payoff is the range of attack and intensity of the arpeggiated runs and trill done so well. You have to have you head into every note.
Ms. Lisitsa certainly discovered what she was meant to do in this life. She is a nuanced artillery piece, firing salvos of perfect interpretation. Beethoven has his head back, roaring in approval, and probably a little in love.
In my hole life, At Last I can hear this sonata with the rythm and velocity that i think it is and I wanted to hear it. Principally at the first part, the Forte Accords left and right hands intercalated.(o.49 minute to 0.51) Extraordinary Valentina. Never saw nobady, and I really know it is like you do. Thank you.!
Wow! I always preferred the Pathetique but this is truly outstanding. Beautiful and scary at the same time. I had goosebumbs throughout the whole thing.
Dang! Now I have to decide whether I like this one better or Horowitz's. I think they are very close. This is really more appassionata. Someone wrote that Horowitz could never quite unleash those million volts of electricity.
However, I fear Horowitz's recording was much superior. Horowitz never allowed anything second rate within a million miles of his recordings.
Either that, or the thickness of tone from this one overwhelms my little laptop speakers.
MARVELOUS COMMENT AND ANNLYSIS ABOUT HER PERFORMANCE. I FELT THE SAME EMOTION A ND ELECTRIFYING SENSATION. CONGRATULATIONS DAVID. FOR YOUR SENSITIVINESS .JUST AND SIMPLY GREAT. GREAT IMAACT ON ME.
appassionata is an understatement. can you spell a-passion-ata. is this liszt playing?! unreal. i love it. what genius.what a totally different approach (or is that avalanche ) to this piece. what was this i just heard?!!!! i must be dreaming.
Interesting points. I have a trace of Valentina's right hand (highly treasured :) and for a female it is a decent size but not unusually large, just in proportion to her height. The pianistic shape with finger to palm ratio and the great flexibility give the impression of much bigger hands and that she can swamp the keyboard. Watching her play virtuoso passages close up is blinding, almost like she has four hands ! Again this translates visually to a shrunken keyboard :)
Really really nice, I love your performance.I have watched your video where you perform the 5th beethoven concerto "Emperador" and I think that you are one of the best pianists playing beethoven, and it's not easy. Thanks for posting, good luck, and I hope you will have a succesfully career!!!;-) Ricardo from Málaga, Spain.
I prefer this recording to the HD version.
It sounds more powerful, and really captures the dynamics of the piece so perfectly.
Play this video with the score in front of you and you will realise how difficult this piece is and how perfectly it is played.
In parts the left hand is almost impossible to play at such a high speed.

i swear every time i can never get tired of hearing her play
Valentina is such a gem to listen to, I would be honored to have her as teacher

It is just simply.....beautiful !!! It is amazing how she plays ! BRAVO !!!
i love this "appassionata". Clear, exactly right, perfect, so brillant, beautiful.
Thanks for your art, Valentina!!!
Completely flawless. Perfect for a rainy night, thank you for sharing your wonderful talents!

This girl is amazing!! This is one of the best Appassionata performances ever (First time listener today)
BRAVO !!!
Quelle virtuosité !!
Quelle maestria !!!
BRAVISSIMO !!!!!!!
I have been playing piano for 11 years, but i don't think that i could ever do this. My hands can't physically move that fast!
Brava, Valentina
her passion and concentration is incredible. i wish i had fingers like hers!

WOW. good piano + a better pianist = fantastic piece. I have always loved valentina's interpretations.

Divine Valentina, as ever! I'm a big fan of yours!

Your technique is so good!
beautiful, love the way you play the dynamics. thanks for posting:)
Wonderful Valentina! You are spectacular! I love Beethoven. It's my favorite composer! Success and happiness in your career.

I dn't understand why you find necessary to pointing the few mistakes, to saying that you know the partition, bravo!. Every great performer make it!
Wow! I always preferred the Pathetique but this is truly outstanding. Beautiful and scary at the same time. I had goosebumbs throughout the whole thing.
I can't believe that these set of pieces were the transition between classical and romantic.
Great music, awesome presentation!

Amazing Valentina
Un sogno vederti suonare, Valentina e forse un giorno verrò a un tuo concerto e a dirti che sei meravigliosa.
Great. I working on this piece right now and its good to see how a profesional does it.
MARVELOUS COMMENT AND ANNLYSIS ABOUT HER PERFORMANCE. I FELT THE SAME EMOTION A ND ELECTRIFYING SENSATION. CONGRATULATIONS DAVID. FOR YOUR SENSITIVINESS .JUST AND SIMPLY GREAT. GREAT IMAACT ON ME.
the shadows of his hands glide fantastically on the keyboard
Great! Congratulations!
wow, just wow...that's amazing. i want to be that good some day.
I think the most valuable parts of this piece should be the ff, Ms. Lisitsa plays those parts like steel. Good performance!
Wonderful!
Brilliant stuff.
Apassion! It's wonderful!
Great to see you with the score; you are human, not a robot 🌺🌺🌺
It would be so nice watching a video with master Barenboim telling his opinnion about Valentina's Appassionata interpretation!
Valentina Forever!!!
I love the throaty sound of this piano in the beginning
absolutely lovely! you should try the Waldstein Sonata someday!!
Großartiges Spiel ! Höchstes Niveau !

I can't find a performance of this song better than this. If you find one, let me know ! Valentina is the best
really great
