This is literally true about piano, basketball, soccer, ANY discipline. More important is the time you spend with them.

You missed one of his key points, chess is inexpensive compared to everything you listed.

    • @SatisfyingBiz

Not really. There is luck involved in soccer and basketball which means that these sports won't teach you to be responsible. There is no logic in piano. Chess is unique and it can't be compared to soccer or basketball

@@SatisfyingBiz So, there is no "luck" involved in the quality of opponent you draw? Make sense, brother.

Completely agree! Especially about piano! It teaches discipline and forms a character like nothing else.

most interesting word (and Kasparov has written about this at length, as well) : chess teaches you to be RESPONSIBLE. (or may as I read it, years ago .. "you cannot win without learning to take responsibility ..") a great insight.

I played Piano as a kid. Personally, if I could do it over again, I would choose chess. One problem I had in my childhood / early adulthood is that I became viciously addicted to online video games. If I would have chosen to play chess, there's a non-zero chance that it would have pulled me away from the addictive skinner-box world of online RPG games.

Not to burst kasparovs bubble but there's a chess club (which participation in is highly incouraged) in almost every (moderately good) school in Poland, and yeah it's a niche sport but definitely not as niche as he portrays here. Every kid that seems to amount to smth in future is taught chess at some early stage in life

He obviously was talking solely about Poland, the most important country in the world. How silly of him.

Chess and life have similarities yes but are extremely different.
Having played in Chess tournaments myself, I've known strong Chess competitors around anywhere from 850-1900 ACF Classical rating, and while many will claim they're low ratings I strongly disagree that these competitors are bad at Chess.
Anyway, these strong Chess competitors some of which play wise moves on the Chess board but take zero personal responsibility in 'real' everyday life!! And then there's people who lack Chess ability who are wise in real life.
You then get other people whom are good at both life 'and' Chess or people who are good at neither.
Yes, Chess teaches strategy, patience, thinking ahead and 'not' being greedy with material but, so many strong Chess competitors are mean people in real life, I have to say, I strongly disagree with Kasparov.
He may be a former world champion but, I disagree with him that Chess teaches wisdom in real life.
Much better to teach kids these qualities in real life.
I don't want to argue w/the internet so am likely 'not' responding.

Thank you, this has to be said every time a grandmaster pretends that chess leads to building moral character. The fact that it helped you get more virtuous does not mean it will do that for anyone else. I would rather see it in a more pessimistic light and argue chess can more easily suck people into an unsocial and potentially damaging mindset of hyperindividualism and escapism from life.

      @@vincentpanhuysen9771 I strongly disagree!
Firstly, I may or may not have interpreted Kasparov's intention correctly, I don't know how well I interpreted his intention and the impact it will have on students. Maybe I was wrong with what I said???
Secondly, Chess is a fantastic game and either very good or neutral for society regarding it's impact on society.
And lastly, it's good that people ask questions and think individually w/out copying society. I have every right to escape the world and other people and think however I like w/out following tradition it's my right as a person!!!
Chess is a fantastic game and at absolute worst has a neutral impact on society and at best has a good impact on society!!!
Not responding anymore, I only responded because I find your comment disturbing and feel the need to challenge it, now I have, I won't respond anymore.
I have the right to escape the world, other people and think individually, Chess doesn't make me think this way nor is there a problem w/how I think, I can think however I like w/out anyone's permission!!!
I am sick of being told how to think and feel by the vast majority of society I come into contact with it's disgusting!!!
