Not really, because Ultra is considered by many fans to be among their five most essential albums. It's not my favorite by them, but I do think that is the best they did after Alan left the band.

Ultra is an absolute Gem and my second favorite album behind Playing the Angel. I feel the 2 albums after they lost a key member to the band have been magnificent in A Broken Frame and Ultra. Both dark and amazing in every way!!!

Exciter was dreadful and the ones after it though a slight improvement, were all too bluesy and lost the total essence of the original Depeche Mode. If you like blues, some great tracks in their own right but not as a true representation of what Depeche Mode used to be
i heard barrel of a gun live in Cleveland right after christian joined to be the live drummer. during the 98 hits. i had always loved barrel of gun. but with live drums.. it turned into almost a metal industrial song. it was badass
The live version is extremely flat with no pop to it , where in the studio version you can here all the nuance's and layers that makes the song special and a great first single and start to ultra
