  • How do you best describe the stunningly beautiful Jaguar XJ Coupé? Sports car? Grand Tourer? 'Executive Coupé' is what the factory decided to called it. A fitting description no doubt. Available with either the classic 4,2l straight-six XK engine or the silky-smooth new 5,3l V12. Most customers choose the smaller powerplant. However, it came with two carburettors only, as opposed to the three SU setup of the E-Type. And the V12 was only available with the automatic gearbox. So, there was really no alternative if you wanted an involving Grand Tourer. Belgian collector friend Christan Poulet sourced a lovely and highly original XJ6C 4,2 with the rare and desirable manual gearbox some time ago. This video tells the story of how he created the perfect Grand Tourer, that Browns Lane never built, by converting the engine to three SU carburettors, with a new intake manifold and K&N filters. The result is nothing short of stunning with a gorgeously sounding and free-breathing engine. This is part 1, wherein we learn about the conversion. Part 2 with a test drive to follow soon.

I always loved the sleek lines of the 4 door Jaguar XJ. Then one day back in the 70`s this young car loving teenager saw an XJC drive pass in shiny black with vinyl roof and red leather interior, I was so impressed it became there and then my favourite all time car, still to this day, they are a timeless classic and one of Jaguars finest hours.

Couldn’t agree more! The design of the XJ, and particularly the XJC, is brilliant with timeless elegance and style. So happy when my videos bring back memories, as I have so many myself. Black over red must be amazing. Do you own an XJC yourself or are you yet to realise your dream? Thanks for watching and commenting!

A collector friend of mine has a rare Daimler 4.2 Coupe with manual gearbox from factory. White over black and in fantastic condition. Good luck! 🏁

Absolutely fantastic and beautiful. I’ve always wanted to know; does swapping to triple carbs affect the fuel consumption?

Thank you so much. We also feel that Christian did a great job with his XJC. The reason for doing the conversion to a new intake manifold and three carbs is to increase power. Basically, the more air and fuel is available, the higher the power output. Whenever you use that power through spirited driving, the engine will consume more fuel. For everyday driving I don't think you wil notice much of a difference, if any.

After the video was made, the owner has now upgraded the carbs with new needles, further improving fuel flow. An optimised exhaust manifold and a more free-flowing exhaust system could certainly improve performance, but for now the owner is happy with the car as it is. Thank you for watching our videos and commenting!

According to the federal HESCHLAVVO law, it is already forbidden in Switzerland to drive combustion engines on mountain passes from 2025. In France, the SCHLABOUBVE regulates that fossil vehicles that produce fine dust are prohibited in all cities from 2025. The BABVVO in Germany will bann exhaust gas pollution from 2027 and that is what will happen in entire EU also bann of all tires and brakes because of fine dust!!!
