    simplifying the story makes sense, especially when you have to tell it so often. I have friends from kindergarten and 1st grade and we don't really remember the origin story of our friendship. We just have like several hypotheses as to why/how we became friends. And I'm sure a lot of our memories together have been misremembered or dramatized as well. If we had to keep telling the story publicly over and over again, we would have agreed on some over simplification too.

    I relate so much to the church thing. I tell my boyfriend now because both of us were raised in the church but neither of us now practice, that you can tell which church a person went to by having them perform, along with all of the hand motions, “I’m in the Lord’s Army.”

    I can’t do it. I can’t bring myself to listen. I have to believe that everything has always been so hunky dory and that they really are the bestest friends forever and that what you see is always real. I need it. It’s been such a part of my daily routine for SO long.

    • @InvdrDana
      @InvdrDana 2 года назад +3

      The part of them being best friends since forever is still legit. This is just a more nuanced, less over-simplified version of how they originally met. No one can manufacture the kind of friendship they have. But this episode doesn't really change much at all.

    I enjoyed this episode. It did feel like complete hesitation & excuses in fear of upsetting viewers; which I understand but hopefully we all agree is absurd. GMM and the creators are incredible, hard working individuals and hearing the evolution from the beginning is another entertaining story. It doesn’t need to be this engraved, historical cloud in the sky. GMM wouldn’t be what it is without some fun, hard to believe mishaps!

    This was one of the most fascinating Ear Biscuits (so far) for me. Not only for the story, but the concept of memories itself. I have aphantasia and one of the more unusual effects of that for me is that I have little or no memory - even from as short a time as a couple of years ago. For example, I couldn't begin to tell you the names of the people I sat with in my classes. My 'memories' are predominantly formed from the stories that people will tell me about my past and recorded history like photographs. This is something that I've come to terms with over the last few years. At times it can be scary and/or upsetting, as people fondly talk about things I have zero recollection of. Knowing that as I experience something now it's likely that I won't remember it at all a few years from now. Therefore other people talking about their own memories seems like some sort of magic to me - so to know that there are flaws and blurring in everyone's recollections is comforting! Great podcast as always.

    You guys are apologizing more than necessary lol. I think most of us understood that the story was a little exaggerated and not 100% accurate, it's all good. If I were in your situation, I'd to the same thing. I'm not surprised at all.
    Anyway, thanks for this entertaining episode, as always. And good luck Kiko!!

    I feel like it’s very normal to stylise your life in a way and the relationships that come with it, i kinda assumed your friendship was like that as well, so no need to feel bad 😂 it’s not like you guys didn’t actually grow up in the same town or didn’t actually go to school together so it’s really not that big of a revelation (at least for me)

    Like a lot of people are saying, I think this is totally normal and honestly pretty common! It makes me think about how I respond to family friends asking me about college…I don’t tell them that I’ve had horrible ups and downs and super difficult things to figure out, I tell them I have a few years left and things are going well lol!!
    Like link was saying towards the beginning, it’s just the succinctness that makes a formed story easier to tell than all the little details that are hard to remember.
