    Donn, I think that you will find that the reo bar on the jaws will wear out quickly as it is only a low grade mild steel. You could possibly increase the service life by raising the carbon content through carburising the steel. You would need to make a suitably sized firing kiln and get some carburising material. Or you could just buy some hardfacing welding rods or wire.
    Choice is yours as always mate.

    Donn, just some FYI, if you want the bearing race to fit tight, machine it out to the right specifications, then put the bearing race in the freezer for an hour, bring it out and drop it in the hole. It will be just a bit loose until the race warms up.
    To remove an old race from a pocket, weld around the inside middle of the race and let it cool. At room temperature the race will shrink.

  • @anderst5248
    @anderst5248 3 года назад +1

    Wow, what a surprise new build! Two things strike me; the very loose fit of the outer ring of the bearing and that you use rebar in the jaws.. Common rebar is actually very soft and is made of mixed scrap metal (but cheap to replace), maybe you should add Loctite or similar to fix the outer ring harder as the bearing will endure a lot of forces and vibrations. Edu tõõle!

    • @Henning_S.
      @Henning_S. 3 года назад

      He said that the rebar he used is from old (electric?)fence posts. We have some very similar electric fence posts which are made of some kind of spring steel, maybe the ones he used are also made of that material, it seems to be pretty tough...
      He can also use those hard facing welding rods to weld a rope on every rebar stick...
      I also don't trust the loose fit on that bearing housing, i think it will work loose and the bearing will rattle around in that housing after a few uses.
      I had a similar problem with a wheel bearing on a trailer, it was a little too easy to press the new bearing in (not even as easy as his bearing went in)and it made weird noises while driving. I used loctite to glue the bearing into the wheel hub and the noise was gone

    A tip regarding welding 6mm+ steel like this.
    To get best weld you should always leave a gap in the root, the bevels should also be ground to a thinner edge, roughly the thickness of your rod/wire. Also the gap should be about the width of the rod/wire.
    This is the only way you get full melt of the material to be joined and filler material reaching the reverse side of the weld.
    After doing a root run on lower amps (working on the thin edge of bevel) you do a capping run on higher amps with thicker rod/wire doing a side to side weave.

    I is nice to see good welds. That is certainly some heavy scrap iron you have. I understand the need for free or next to free but if that is mild steel it will wear a lot. You should get you some hardfacing wire and apply it to the plates. I know about this mainly from a friend who has a robotics welding company that makes welders for hardfacing the inside of pipes and valves.
