I heard that on September 11 Gottfried tried catching a direct flight to California but they said to him they have no direct flights because they have to stop off at the Empire State Building first.
I was at Ground Zero the week of 9/11 amid the horrific loss and destruction. I returned the night before the 4th anniversary to see the Towers in Light and ran into a couple guys that had been there when I was. It is rather difficult to find humor about those dark days. But one guy remarked that I would have been impossible for a sniper on the other on the other side of the river to hit any off us. Another fellow asked why and the first said because of the Chinese Wall of water along the highway. We all started to laugh. The broadcasters were great and the American people amazing in their generosity. Everyday news people read a list. They would say on radio or TV the guys (and gals) at the site need x, y and z. It seems one night socks were on the list. The next morning two tractor trailers loaded with socks pulled up and just unloaded on the side of the highway. So much bottled water was sent, it actually was piled 6 feet high all along West Street. The support shown was so overwhelming, to the point at times it was almost comical. I told the the guys that when I saw all the socks I had remarked: "Please Lord, don't let the say we need toothbrushes." The mental image of a couple truck loads of toothbrushes showing up cracked us all up. We had a hardy laugh, but their their wasn't a dry eye as we recalled the outpouring of love and support during such a trying times.
This is the first video Ive watched since his passing just minutes ago. RIP Gilbert Gottfried.
