Ghostly cannon fire

  • Before we begin. Cavalry is spelled wrong. I decided to take another look at my Gettysburg video I produced back in 2012. I uploaded the original video that was shot in HD so that you could hear the loud booms. I don't know what these booms are but at the time it really did sound and feel like the war was still on and canons were being shot all around me. Please leave constructive comments and let me know if anyone else has experienced this kind of residual energy before.

Ive lived all my life, about 20 minutes down the road from Shiloh National Military Park, in southwest Tennessee. Ive spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours over the years, just walking the grounds. Ive never heard or seen anything paranormal, but I have felt that anxious feeling of dread that you mentioned, in certain different locations of the park. It is an odd and creepy feeling. Ive noticed it happening the most, in places like the Confederate mass graves. Dont know if that dread i feel, has anything to do with the paranormal, or if it has to do with thinking about how sad it is for me, to think about those kids being killed and thrown into
trenches on top of each other, however they happened to land, and covered with dirt. While the Federal troops killed there, have their own big and beautiful cemetery, and were all buried in their own graves, with honor and respect.

Just to let everyone know, I'm a reenactor and just finished up a living history reenactment at Gettysburg. During the night we heard distant gunfire and cannon fire EXACTLY like this at night and if that wasn't creepy enough something was thrown at our tents and everyone confirmed hearing the gunfire. The something hitting the tents is still kind of eerie but less likely to be paranormal.

Really shook me up because it was so clear like someone was shooting at me. I asked a tour guide park ranger if there were any reenactments that day or if there was a gun range close by and there were none of that going on. He didn't believe in ghosts but said he would check it out where I was pointing it came from. It was at like 2pm in the middle of the afternoon too. Just shocking because I'm usually a skeptic.

I've been all over Antietam and most of the major Civil War battlefields From the banks of the Mississippi to Charleston and from Gettysburg and Perryville Ky down to Florida. Antietam and Shiloh are (or at least as of 20 years ago were) the two best preserved battlefields out there in my view. Something about Antietam in particular, you can really feel the energy that's trapped there and at no spot more so than the Bloody Lane. I don't have or claim to have any paranormal abilities, quite the opposite, there'd have to be something very dramatic to happen for me to claim I just saw or heard a ghost, I'm not sensitive at all there. But there is just something about the Bloody Lane that is hard to explain but my guess is others that have been there would say the same.

Heard similar phenomenon on Saunders Field, off Hwy 20, Battle of the Wilderness, back in Jan 2014 driving home from reserve drill. As a Civil War history buff, I decided randomly, to stop by the field since I was driving right by it. Got out, took some photos and a video. It was a gorgeous Sunday evening. The trees were still glistening in the late evening sun from a previous snow shower that had passed a bit earlier. As I got out of the car, I heard what sounded pretty clearly like sporadic cannon fire in the distance (I'm an artillery officer, and know what cannon fire sounds like up close and at a distance), maybe one or two miles away. So, I was thinking there was maybe an artillery demonstration or reenactment going on until I realized that would not be normal on a Sunday evening on a winter's day with no Civil War battle anniversary of any kind on the calendar. I also got it on video, but never posted it, but still have it. The fire kept up for the entire 20 minutes or so I was there (which is also unusual for an artillery demonstration or even a reenactment since those rounds don't come cheap). Anyway, it was pretty cool. and I felt privileged to hear it. Not my first Civil War "ghost story". Had two others, both at Gettysburg. When I lived in Virginia, I would usually visit Gettysburg on the anniversary days of battle. Had the kids with me and we were standing by the John Burns statue in the middle of the day when we started smelling fresh gunsmoke. No re-enactments were going on until later in the week. Did not hear any fireworks and there was no one around us. No one had any cap guns or sparklers that we could see. The weird part was that it was only around the John Burns statue. Kids smelled it, too. Could have been a lot of other things. Second "ghost story" occurred as we were leaving the battlefield that same day on the road that runs by the base of Big Round Top. It was dusk, almost completely dark. Suddenly in my headlights on the right side of the road, walking against our direction, appeared a young man wearing a brown Civil war era uniform, rifle in hand, rucksack on his back looked at us, very neat in appearance, full head of dark brown hair, turned left up the hill through the tall grass then disappeared. All this happened in less than a second. I clearly saw the man, but was in no way shocked or startled, at first thinking it was a lost re-enactor--there were plenty around that day. For some reason, my first reaction was to look down at my dashboard, which I did for a fraction of a second, not sure why. When I looked back up, the man was gone. Even turned the car around to find him. I could not, but as I said it was dark by then. The kids were in the car with me, but they did not see him, although, I don't think they were looking out the window. Even though it happened so quickly, I can recall all the details clearly. First and only time I'd ever see anything like that. To this day, I'm not sure if I manufactured the image, or if I saw what appeared to be a Confederate soldier. In any case, it was pretty cool.

Tourists would always ask is their a demonstration today of cannon fire and I'd just smile and say No! One day early in the morning I was right at the edge of West Confederate avenue when the entire Virginia army came marching out of the tree line and it was like 1000's of men and the drummer boys playing ghost horses and the men with no eyes. Almost crapped my pants! lasted for about 2 minutes straight and slowly started to fade away. David. I've heard similar stories from numerous people that were ither visiting or working in the park. I have a few other videos on my YT channel that demonstrate this. I don't believe they are ghosts of past lives or spirits but a recording of past events that under the perfect conditions replay themselves. If you happen to be at the right place at the right time you just might get to witness this as you have done. it would also explain why when you returned the same day and time a year later you didn't see the images again. The conditions were different and thus the playback couldn't happen.

Same thing happened to me back around 2009. We had our scout troop camped at the camping grounds on the confederate side. At some point during the night I woke up and before drifting off, I heard the booms. Very faint, like it was very far off. I've often wondered if it wasn't something the park service does to drum up business. But those cannons...if real...had to be miles and miles away. At the battle of Bull Run, which was 26 miles from Washington DC, they could hear the cannons in town. I would think that if the park service was doing this...someone somewhere would need to be close to these and be complaining a lot about it. SO that tends to make me think it was real.

Consider the possibility that entities we perceive as ghosts reside in a quantum state, distinct from our classical understanding of reality. Quantum superposition, where particles exist in multiple states simultaneously, could be a fundamental characteristic of these ghostly entities. Instead of adhering to the conventional laws of classical physics, these entities may navigate a quantum plane where their existence is defined by a spectrum of possible states.
Entanglement, another crucial quantum phenomenon, could play a role in the manifestation of ghosts. Imagine that during significant life events or moments of intense emotion, the particles associated with an individual's consciousness become entangled with the surrounding environment. This entanglement forms a unique quantum signature that persists beyond physical death, creating a quantum consciousness residue.
This quantum consciousness residue could exist on a parallel quantum plane, intersecting with the quantum fields in our physical world. The intersection points might serve as gateways or conduits, allowing glimpses of the quantum entity to manifest in our observable reality. These intersections could occur under specific conditions or in locations with heightened quantum activity, providing an explanation for why certain places are perceived as haunted.
The quantum plane inhabited by these entities might not adhere to the constraints of time as we understand it classically. Time in the quantum realm could be non-linear, allowing ghosts to appear at different points in their past or future. This temporal flexibility could explain reports of apparitions reenacting historical events or seemingly interacting with contemporary observers.
Additionally, the uncertainty principle could contribute to the elusive nature of ghosts. The more precisely we attempt to measure their properties, the more uncertain their position and momentum become. This inherent uncertainty could explain why ghosts often appear as fleeting, ethereal figures, defying conventional notions of solid matter.
The entanglement between the quantum plane of ghosts and our physical world might also influence electromagnetic fields. Ghostly manifestations could produce fluctuations in these fields, potentially leading to anomalies detectable by electronic devices. This interaction aligns with reports of paranormal activity affecting lights, sensors, and other electrical equipment.
However, the challenge lies in bridging the gap between the quantum and classical worlds. The fragile nature of quantum states and the susceptibility to decoherence in the presence of external factors make it difficult for these entities to maintain a stable connection with our reality. The intersections between the quantum plane and our physical world could be sporadic, explaining why ghostly encounters are often unpredictable and elusive.

Like how one would feel moments after the blast and the initial shockwave goes through. If any of that makes any sense. It was also mixed with that erie feeling. One could chop up the sounds to a backfire of a lawnmower, which there was one mowing around the museum. But i know what that sounds like and it wasnt that. These booms was too loud as well, and came from the direction of the ridges where the initial fighting started.

      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Dunbar_(1650)
There have been a few reenactments over the years, using replica cannons and guns from the period. Dunbar may have been 213 years before Gettysburg, but the sound of cannon fire is very distinctive. I’ve heard it up close and a few miles away. That definitely sounded like cannons.
That’s so cool that you actually _felt_ it. It suggests to me that it sounded distant because of the passage of time rather than your physical proximity to the source...would you agree?

Alot of folks up there blast large rocks and boulders and tree stumps from their fields using black powder. I'm not far from Gettysburg and the practice of stump/rock blowing is still popular. We have someone on a 40 acre farm who has a cannon, very different sound and feel.
I had family at the east Cav field. Alot of flat farms and sound travels, been there alot and heard booms occasionally.
Also, there are tons of farms that host reenactor only events as well as spectator events. Many of our reenacting units use private farms and historic homes for training camps.
So if your actually hearing artillery its some sort of event or demo. We do them constantly around that area!

What I have noticed about people, and that includes me because I have had spooky experiences on the battlefield too, is that people will experience whatever is necessary to support what they want to believe is happening. I had an experience by Culp’s Hill at 2am that was terrifying. I was convinced I experienced everything that I perceived was happening. But much later, being honest with myself, I was also able to come up with rational alternatives for every element of it. I guess there’s just something about this place for obvious reasons that brings this out in us.

If not likely residual haunting? Since the filming of Gettysburg, seem to make the area more active.

Just a factual observation: Gettysburg is approx 40 miles from Harrisburg, and the cannon fire at the Battle was reportedly heard there...probably as faintly heard in Harrisburg as in this video. My point being that if these "ghostly sounds" are to represent what one would have heard AT this actual location, the level is far too low.

Good point Jim but I've come to learn that residual energy is not as strong or loud as the energy at the time of the actual event. Sometimes it is put it seems that most of the time it isn't.

I hear it, it's like a faint sound that you can actually feel

Excellent. Not everyone can hear the booms. Your the 1st one to say you can feel them. Thanks for checking out my video.

Can you tell me where you located at the battlefield? Is there particular conditions this is heard, like certain atmospheric conditions like low solid clouds, stuff like that? Or is it just random? I came back to this and was adjusting volume, finally cranking full volume. Even the unedited the left headphone literally vibrates on booms 1,2,3,4 with 1 being strongest. I've been there once and hired a guide to drive our car, that was well worth it for a first time visit.

Thanks for listening. This was recorded at the East Cavalry battle field with is just a few miles from Gettysburg. You can look it up on line for a full description and exact location.

@@valpro99 Dec 2020 ended back here accidently. Had very high quality in-ear headphones with noise cancelling. In the edited part I'm hearing 2 to 3 booms before the louder one you labeled as Boom 1. When booms 4 thru 8 go off I had a "visual" of a line of cannon ripple firing. A little eerie.

I once read where the heaviest artillery fire at Gettysburg could be faintly heard near Pittsburg, PA. and other places due to atmospheric conditions. Is that true?

Not sure if it could be heard all the way to Pittsburg, since it's 185 west of Gettysburg but I have heard reports it would be heard in Harrisburg. Some reports even said it could be heard 140 miles east toward Philadelphia.
