Hey folks, I've gone down a slightly different route with this video - there's less music ... so that we can focus on the trim itself - normal service shall resume with the next upload :)
It helps to make the vidoe more serious
I actually kinda like it this way
It's a welcome change of pace. When you want to focus on a sticky issue that the professionals need to pay attention to instead of us gawkers, it
absolutely the way to go.
I'd like to think you read my comment on a recent video where I requested a video like this... Absolutely love it! The sound of the knife cutting the hoof is therapeutic...
this video format is wayyy way better, please keep it like this
Never would I have ever guessed I’d go down a rabbit hole of watching cow’s feet be trimmed.😂

God, my feelings exactly! Started on Tiktok and got sucked in for whatever reason and now here I am haha 😄
Join the club!! I’m gonna guess we all watched some sort of weird bodily videos like pimples or ingrown toenails or something and we all joined together on this channel!!
I grew up on a farm and worked dairy farms when I was young. This type of care never happened 35 years ago. I think your videos are good education for dairymen to care for their herd.
What happened in old Day they put cow down
I think most of us Cattlemen or rancher's would prefer Cowboy over dairymen
Cows were kept outside most of the year then. I walk past a place where they are inside ALL OF THE TIME and have never seen such miserable animals. There is this sign ARLA which means ASDA. They are walking around in their own mess 100% and no grass to allow their feet to dry out.

I'm surprised these infected hooves ever heal with the cows standing in manure all the time. It's a miracle as far as I can see!
I wouldn't say its all the time, and usually in modern barns there are hoof cleaners the cows walk through :)
Yup most dairy farms do a foot bath couple times a week at least. Plus they're pretty clean
It's not like they stand in nothing but manure, sure they may walk through some, but usually they're in a clean pasture
Typically cows are kept in a pasture/barn. They are usually standing on hay or grass, though it can get muddy outside and sometimes they do step in poop.
Cattle/cows are much stronger rhan us mere mortals
My man shaving the hoof off like swiss cheese. What a great video!

This was the exact conversation I had with a friend of mine last night lol.
I am in shock over how quiet the cow was during the process! Bless her. Thank you for being so kind to her.
I was thinking the same thing! Cows usually will either stamp their feet when in pain or vocalize to a degree. She did neither which was surprising
I'm far from an expert but I did work for a vet as a teen (in the early 1970s). I know the outer hoof wall (horn) has no nerve endings--it is akin to toenails. The pain is often from the pressure on the inside of the hoof capsule from pressing against the relatively inflexible outer hoof wall (when is isn't caused by something like a rock, a nail, etc). Back then, no one in our part of the country was using angle grinders, it was all done via hoof knife and nippers.
If the hoof knife is kept razor sharp, there's little additional pressure applied to the hoof as horn is removed. You can't really see it in the video but quite often I could see as a teen, as soon as the abscess was opened and the pus, etc, started to come out, the cow would relax all over. With the pressure relieved, there was some soreness left, no doubt, but most of the pain was gone.
Graeme keeps his knives extremely sharp and his angle grinder blades are also very sharp. You can see that he applies very little pressure as he trims hooves. Also, just being in the crush with a good part of her weight supported by the belly sling (don't know what they call it in Scotland but that is what it functionally is) and the sore hoof firmly supported by the hoof /leg restrainer, she starts the trim feeling less pain. It's like the difference between standing with a rock in your shoe and siting down with the rock in the shoe.
As soon as Graeme gets into the abscess, that cow felt an immediate reduction in pain, just as if you started to slide your foot out of the shoe with the rock in it. Aaaaaaaah, the relief!
So overall, for the cow, having Graeme so deftly treat her sore hoof is probably the high point of that day. She went into the crush three legged lame (from Graeme's commentary) and came out feeling a bit sore and bruised with leftover pain from the abscess but overall incredibly much better.
@@GrainneDhu Thank you for providing this well thought out and educational reply. When the cows are in the crush I tend to watch their front legs to gauge comfort. Graeme is truly gifted. We are blessed to have him represent the trimming business as a caring, professional.
@@untbunny Agreed!
I suspect that in a crush with so much body support, the front legs are not responsive in the same way they were in the old crushes that didn't support the cow's weight.
For the cattle with healthy hooves just getting a routine trim, it's probably a bit irritating to feel trapped that way. It's the cows who have painful feet that probably come out feeling like "OMG, I am so relieved!"
4:56
"This problem is a lot worse that it first seems." Um, it seems pretty bad right from the get go to me!
Right?! I thought the same. It sounds hollow 😬
Anyone who said that was bat crap crazy. I am not a professional when it comes to cows feet or anything like that, but I could see before he even washed the foot, it looked really bad.
Having been here for some time now so I'm fairly clued up at what you mean...when you said that it gets much worse...I thought ''oh heck''😬
I was about to say. I'm an equestrian myself and I know very little about cow's feet. But even I can see this is not good. Poor girl, I hope she makes a good recovery.

@@halcyonmom Already there myself - well only 60. But diabetic neuropathy has hit my hands so bad that at time I can't open and close them all the way.
Retired RN here. I’m obsessed with these videos I find them so relaxing and I’m not even sure why. I love the music and Graeme is sweeter than any of the docs I had to deal with 😂.
When I was in my teens I traveled with a veterinarian and did a lot of work like I just saw in this upload. That was about 50+ years ago so techniques, medications, and materials have evolved a lot. We, too, cared about the pain/comfort of the cow and tried our best to relieve the suffering the animal was experiencing. God Bless the fellow who is doing this work and helping these poor animals.
I'm so glad that there are people out there that take the time and resources to look after their animals.
Это действительно очень круто и достойно уважения!
the whole place looks like a run down dairy farm, where they most likely breed cows and take away the children from the mom cows so they can continue to get their milk, and judging by how bad her hoof was the owners called him just when the hoof got rlly rlly bad and prob didnt care that much ab the poor girl
@@aceshat8291 Precisely - taking 'good' care of the cows until their bodies are drained, they can't produce milk anymore and they are killed for their meat. Not to mention if the cows give birth to a bull calf, the calf gets bolt gunned in the head.
unlike PETA
@@sarahomalley3760 if you're gonna slaughter an animal, might as well treat it with the utmost respect and care.
Also Fun Fact: experienced butchers can tell/have an idea of how the animal was treated when it was alive just by looking at its meat
Listening to the birds chirp while you trim was actually surprisingly relaxing
This poor girl made me tear up as her foot was so bad. I hope that you were able to fix her issue completely. Thank goodness that the farmer knows the value of these cows who have these kind of injuries on their feet and have enough care and compassion to see that they will be given the chance to be taken care of instead of taking them to a slaughterhouse straight away. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. Much love from Alberta, Canada.

@Sincerely Queenie I'm not a vegan, but honestly there's absolutely no reason in the world we should be eating cows. Or even milk. I can't even drink milk anyway anymore. I'm not an infant so. But honestly, we don't need steaks. It's kind of fucked up.
And honestly if more people saw these cows in person everyday and saw this guy helping them. And the recovery, they'd probably think twice about steak. So maybe it's a good thing. Again I'm nti a vegan, but I don't think red meat is necessary either

Wow 🤩nice comment, You comments so good where are you from?
Imagine when we humans are in pain, we can actually tell a person where the pain is, animals on the other hand cannot speak to tell us the exact place that is causing them discomfort ... feel so sad for animals right now after watching this video.
It was probably a huge relief knocking down that hoof. infection causes pressure and pain.
really reminds you that even if you are probably more unfortunate than others, there is probably still someone even more unfortunate than you
Also many animals, specially herbivores, do not show that they are in pain as a defense mechanism to avoid predation. Only when they are very in a very severe situation of pain will they express by changing their behaviour or showing discomfort
Feel worse because wild animals don't deal with this, only animals that are on farms like these.
I dont think that they have nerves or veins in there hoofs so it would not hurt them. It only hurt the cow bc it was most likely pushing into its foot which caused the pain.
I’m finding myself on your channel more and more. The compassion you show for all of your “clients” is definitely translated effortlessly by you. I find your work fascinating I don’t know what it is! Keep up your good work, those of us who come from Philadelphia don’t normally have close contact with farm animals,. Watching you work is like watching a magic trick!
Psahtek tu débites

Blue spraypaint it is!!!!

These vids make me wonder how long a hoofed animal in the wild like a bison could survive with such an infection. Probably not too long when it reaches this stage. Predators single out the weak to prey upon.
Wild bovines/buffalo usually have a lot of different terrain to roam in, and have much more durable hoof material, so they don't usually get into scenarios like domestic cows.
that being said, it still happens, and yes, usually the animal gets a throatful of fangs from a wolf or cat of some kind, or dies from septicemia from the infection.
Aye, species like cows that have been domesticated for centuries would have little chance of survival in the wild due to changes in their body structure, if all humans stopped keeping farming animals suddenly for one reason or another they could die out. Domesticated cows have to be milked to avoid infection, cows and horses need their feet trimmed and cared for to avoid abscesses and keratin overgrowth, sheep need to be sheared annually, etc. It's interesting how human influence has shaped evolution in this way and now we're kind of tied together- domesticated animals enabled new innovations in agriculture that allowed a bigger population to be supported. Without them we would struggle, and without us they would struggle. Forever linked and relying on each other.
@@froogsleegs that's only animals humans selectively bred. Some selectively bred dogs ended up with terrible genetic problems.

Reminds me of when you're trying to peel the hole off of a potato
Yes! And you keep using the peeler thinking "surely it can't go much deeper" but then it does and you have to go in there with the knife.
@@PartanBree and then you have half of a potato left cause you cut off so much lol
I love that you always keep the cow’s well-being first. You are kind when you treat them and that’s why I love your videos. You’re a good man. Greetings from Texas.
I pity that cow~that had to be hurting her so badly. Good on you guys for helping her out so well! I'm sure the owner was thrilled -- as was the cow! Thanks from a cattleman's granddaughter! :-)
You can tell that he Cares about Alleviating the Animals Pain ❤🙏
Love the difference. It also helps when you explain what your seeing and why you’re doing what you’re doing. Thanks for posting and I love you channel
Oh my what a job you have. Never in my born days have seen someone do what you do. I’m glad that you are helping those animals. Someone has too. Keep up the great work because that really takes talent to do that. Charlotte in Arkansas
Oof. I was actually relieved when it finally started bleeding a little... when I first saw those holes, and how rubbery and rotten the sole horn appeared, I was half expecting a huge mass of maggots and necrotic tissue. I'm so glad you've set her to rights!
In this situation, I think you rather ought to say "hoof" instead of "oof" ^^
I love watching you work. You are a compassionate person and I enjoy listening to you explain every situation.
Does anyone else get closer to the their screen to try and get a better look at what’s going on?
No cause I'm not blind 😂😂😂
Yes...lol
Absolutely 😂
Me 😮😧😦😯🤭
lol!! how did you know???
Ten years of working in a hospital has taught me to *never* take things at face value. They can always be far worse than they first appear. Assume the worst and you'll never be caught off guard.
I am so glad that they have you to help them.
This could be the most interesting thing I’ve ever seen? I’ve spent hours watching? Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Keep up the good work. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Oh gosh, this poor girl! It hurt my heart to see her hoof peel away like that! I can't imagine the pain she must have been in with all of that manure and water stewing inside her hoof. Thank you and thanks to the owner for not just putting her down.
Wow 🤩nice comment, You comments so good where are you from?

Poor girl . So glad you helped her!
Oh my gosh that poor cow! I have no idea why this channel ended up in my recommends but it did and I am glad. I find it relaxing to watch for some odd reason. It makes me smile to see the cows get better.
