How to Perform a SWOT Analysis - Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat

SWOT Analysis is a widely used business analysis technique to analyze the current state (situation analysis) and optimize the organization's competitive advantage. The SWOT Analysis technique is an analysis of the organization's strengths (S), weaknesses (W), opportunities (O), and threats (T). During the analysis, consideration is given to both internal and external factors that impact the organization. From a business analysis perspective, the power of this strategic technique is realized when the quadrants are mapped to goals and objectives that are executed in the form of projects and other change initiatives. This is known as TOWS. In this video, I'll be giving a tutorial on how to perform a SWOT analysis as well as how business analysts can USE it once the analysis is complete! We will also take a look at a case study of Apple Inc. based on some recent data!
When to use a Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat (SWOT) Analysis?
- When analyzing the organization's current state
- When seeking to understand the organization, products, or stakeholders
- When seeking to better understand the organization’s customer base
- When considering entering a new market or exiting a current market
- When exploring or considering new projects or initiatives
- When performing strategic planning and analysis
- When assessing the value of a potential solution
- When selecting from multiple solution options
- When performing competitive benchmarking

Great question. Failing to consider the external environment is a common mistake. Concentrating solely on internal factors and overlooking external opportunities and leave the organization in a vulnerable positions.

Great question! Since the GAP analysis generally focuses on the internal aspects of the organization, it can be done prior to the SWOT as an input to the internal strengths and weaknesses. Also by using the Gapy analysis to determine the desired state, the team will be better able to identify the areas of weakness during the SWOT assessment.
