- The Italy 1990 World Cup final was just about to begin. Helmut Kohl, Luciano Pavarotti, Luca di Montezemolo and other celebrities on the stands were about to witness the most controversial final in the world cup history. It was a rematch of the 1986 final, which Argentina won. Germans took their revenge here. Argentina had many of their key players suspended, the most important one missing was Claudio Caniggia who was suspended for two really stupid and useless fouls. First yellow came for timewasting in the USSR game, and the second one came from a deliberate handball in the semifinal against Italy. Gustavo Dezotti of Cremonese (ITA) was his replacement but couldn't do much. Germany was the better team but the penalty that got awarded was scandalous.

1982 - 36 fouls
1986 - 53 fouls (an all time record)
1990 - 50 fouls (2nd all time record)
Media tend to mentioned Argentina got 2 players sent off but they never mentioned there were 5 players getting sent off while playing against Argentina during this tournament, including Brazil.
Only the group game against Romania did not involve a red card

Germany was the favourite team to win the 1990 world cup....They had great players like Brehme, voller, juergen klinsmann and ofcourse their captain.
Argentina came to the finals by their luck...it lost to cameroon in the first round, Won against Italy with great difficulty in penalty shoot out....Germany totally outplayed the Argentinians in the Finals and it a was sweet revenge for the 1986 Finals. Go GErmany go ...go germany go..Surely Germany will win the 2014 World Cup !!!

Germany also reached final by luck, 0-0 in semi and won on penalties. Argentina faced host Italy and also Brazil. Germany gets easier route like in 2002.

This was one the two worst World Cup final matches ever, the other being 2010. Italy should have been in the final playing Germany, not Argentina. Italy were better than Argentina at the 1990 World Cup, and Argentina were lucky to beat Italy- once again on penalties. Argentina in that tournament were a mediocre side carried by Maradona and their keeper Goyocochea, and Maradona was off-form anyway. You know who was the best Argentine player in that tournament? It was Goyocochea. Without him, Argentina would never have made it past Yugoslavia in the quarter-finals.

Yeah but you never explained why Italy deserved to be in the final , it was a famously bore of a semi /world cup where both played for penalties and no chances were created in the match , sorry your claim is nothing more then a rant against the argentine
This Argentina was mediocre, yes. But it also had one of the best defenses in the World Cup history. Simon, Monzon, Serrizuela, Batista and Ruggeri were sensational in this tournament. Simon especially. He should have won the best player award.

Argentina would have been out at group stage if wasnt Maradona assist in 1-1 draw against Romania and most likely will be out in second round if wasnt that brilliant run and pass by him aswell.
I have never understood how it was possible to transform the 1986 argentinian team to what we saw in Italy 1990. The worst team to ever reach a final. Thank God they did not win

Agreed. It was really horrible final. Germany playacting and Argentina playing brick wall defense. There was only ONE shot recorded on goal (total).
Some disappointment to see Diego involved with a MX division 2 team. What the heck is he doing there? Here is a guy who accomplished everything. Voted best player in the world a few times. Could it be he needs work and futbol is all he knows? Possibly. He did disparage his life and income for sometime. Despite that, this man has a great futbol mind and should be up there with a first division team. Now, who is going to give him that chance, after all, Diego is Diego, and no one really tells him what to do. Just recently, he dedicated a win to the president of Venezuela, and he got fined by FIFA for doing that. Doesn't he know that you are supposed to keep politics out of FIFA soccer? Insane!
Fifa need to announce the refree before start the game including third refree to analyse from reply some things going wrong in that final.

@eneaanee I'm sure you wouldn't accept a second place if you don't deserve it either. The referee Codesal was obviously for Germany. Even if the FIFA didn't pay him, he is Mexican and Mexicans, at least in football, always hated Argentina.
If I was that Mexican ref I would be pissed that the director missed the name caption......

they were terrible, they should have got stuffed by Yugoslavia and Brazil and beating Italy still makes me ill, the worst finalist in a world cup...they never won a corner in the final...an Italy vs german would have been perfect but a Italy vs England also good..

@zodyce German football is alot better than argentinian. 4-0 just proved it, with no stars! The germans won WC 1974 against the netherlands fair and square, cant say the same about the way argentina won it in 1978 against the same netherland bar cruyeff. Shame on argentina for kidnapping cruyeffs family, they should give back their medals.
