If Maru didn't have Serral as his kryptonite he would be so unquestionably far ahead of any other SC2 player in the greatest of all time debate. If only he put up a better fight or even won in the finals against Serral at IEM Katowice and that plus an 8th GSL (doubling the old record of 4 held by MVP) would just put a world of distance between him and the second greatest. His career isn't over yet, maybe he'll meet Serral in another Finals and get revenge. That's all it would take for me to declare him the obvious and undisputed greatest but until then it's him and Serral pretty neck and neck.
Serral does seem to have Maru´s number in the heads up. No denying it. Serral is such a brilliant player, a true menace to everyone that faces him. One of the best of all time, for sure. With a solid case for the greatest of all time. But, in my mind, it´s somewhat hard to compete against 8 GSL titles.
Those tournaments are completely different too. Playing against double digit number of players over a weekend is vastly different from 2-3 possible opponents over several weeks. If Serral were actually the GOAT he'd compete in GSL

It's kind of pointless to argue about that too much. Serral and Maru are absolute masters of their realms. Since neither Serral will ever compete in GSL nor Maru will go full allin on participating in overseas tournaments all the time while perhaps living in Europe being on a a foreign team, it'll just stay like that.

For me it's the complete awe at how efficiently he plays. While absolutely crazy stuff is going on in the map, (sometimes to the point where you think Maru is losing a fight, and could be any precarious position) then you glance away for a matter of what feels like 30 seconds and look back and suddenly he is ahead 18 workers, has an upgrade lead and he's landed a third base with the fourth one building and it's all just "blah blah blah maru things". I don't really care that he's missing the world championship trophy, The reason that he is simply the best human being that's ever touched the game in my eyes is: the way plays when he's up against the wall, chips are down, And he's way behind, sometimes 70 supply behind.. The list of games [I have on a Google keep note] where he is that far behind and yet somehow grinds an impossible comeback like an absolute unkillable Jedi-Terran - is pretty long. For me that is what makes him quite fascinating and exhilarating to watch.. It's not just watching him play while he's ahead, it's witnessing the magic he can do with these units when he's BEHIND that keeps me coming back. Also those moments when he's being all-in'ed by the likes of Rogue, Reynor and Showtime (recently) and pulls off the most edge-of-your-seat clutch holds. That's my fav.
Her0 & Maru friendship is quite a thing ! I love to see them smiling. You can almost read the tackle they send at each other during the pregame lobby. **Spoiler protection** Maru wins the thing, goes laughing at hero and hero simply smiles and raises his fist like "I'm gonna get you next time, you silly goose" Lovely
If GSL is reading this, we LOvE Stateless. This is a perfect combination of color and play by play commentary. It's very engaging; I know Tasteless is the classis combo but State has really come into his own here, and I hope he's here to stay.
I've been watching competitive StarCraft for so long and it's crazy to think here I am in 2024 still watching. I selfishly hope this goes on forever and that we see all the same players. They are all so amazing. We have a rich history in this game thanks to everyone.

That same player also beats everyone in his premier league when playing overseas with better statistics in premier tournaments than Maru himself for every single player in that Premier league... (not even mentioning the head to head). Sure that other player has never played a full regular season in the premier league with its different format, but let us say he has played in the German league for 2 years of his peak and now 4 in the La Liga and won a lot there by destroying his opponents by a landslide. I think there is a lot of argument on why that player would be the GOAT, regardless of not playing in the Premier league once.

@@forte9910 I suspect it was the "patch effect". He was a lot stronger following the release of the patch. But the main problem with Protoss is the best way (currently) to play it is aggro and cheese. Once this is figured out, they struggle. The Stats games I watched were a genuine treat to witness...and if Prot went more down that direction...I think that would shift things a lot more than any future nerfs to terran or buffs to protoss ever would.
I was kind of hoping stats would be hero just because I think he has a better chance of being Maru. Overall I thought it was a great season and I was happy to see that Protoss did so well.

Protoss trade their shields and reengage before they recharge way too carelessly. Some unfortunate risks by Hero... blinking in when he shouldnt have... put him at huge disadvantages repeatedly.
Wow Hero totally threw the series. He was ULTRA aggressive at every point almost to the point of being a spazz. Like seriously dude, you dont need to eeek out every little bit at once. Every single time he had a chance to play D and counter someone's move he was caught with his pants down. MAYBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBE scout on match point before you push out with the stalkers?
