Lyoto is one of my top 2 favorite MMA fighters of all time. Was such a joy watching him systematically pick apart opponents with his karate, which is so rare in MMA, as most strikers in MMA come from Boxing or Muay Thai backgrounds. Wins over some truly big names like BJ Penn, Mauricio Rua, Rashad Evans, Randy Couture, Tito Ortiz, Chael Sonnen, Ryan Bader, Dan Henderson, Gegard Mousasi, Vitor Belfort, and Rich Franklin. I wish he had retired sooner though, he has really damaged his record by fighting past his prime. Should have retired after that Chael Sonnen win when he was 26-8, instead he has now lost 4 in a row and still won't retire.

Long before Lyoto was in the UFC he was already considered to be a potential P4P best. Keep in mind when BJ fought him, BJ was considered by many to be the greatest fighter in the sport. Also Lyoto was the only person to give Rich Franklin an L at that point, Rich went on to dominate the MW division in the UFC. One of the funnier anecdotes is Sam Hoger, he was incredibly salty about losing and to this day I imagine he still hates Lyoto with a passion. Was so sweet to see him get KO'd.
Another interesting anecdote is that fans who watched Japanese events both considered Shogun and Machida to be 2 of the greatest ever. While Machida seemed unstoppable, the old school Pride fans knew that Shogun was an elite fighter. It was one of the best matchups in the history of the sport from that perspective.
One more really interesting anecdote with a bit of personal history: I come from the Straight Blast Gym. My coach Matt Thornton helped Randy prepare for the UFC. Matt did several video series called FJKD or Functional Jeet Kune Do (which essentially means MMA in today's terms). One of the interesting narratives was that traditional martial arts techniques wouldn't work against solid fundamental wrestling, you can't throw a fancy kick because you'll get taken down, and Randy was used as a prime example to demonstrate this point. To see Lyoto use the CRANE KICK, the kick that is literally associated with Karate Kid to defeat Randy Couture - it was absolutely mind blowing at the time and to this day I still don't think people fully appreciate how interesting this moment was within MMA.
