Long before Lyoto was in the UFC he was already considered to be a potential P4P best. Keep in mind when BJ fought him, BJ was considered by many to be the greatest fighter in the sport. Also Lyoto was the only person to give Rich Franklin an L at that point, Rich went on to dominate the MW division in the UFC. One of the funnier anecdotes is Sam Hoger, he was incredibly salty about losing and to this day I imagine he still hates Lyoto with a passion. Was so sweet to see him get KO'd. Another interesting anecdote is that fans who watched Japanese events both considered Shogun and Machida to be 2 of the greatest ever. While Machida seemed unstoppable, the old school Pride fans knew that Shogun was an elite fighter. It was one of the best matchups in the history of the sport from that perspective. One more really interesting anecdote with a bit of personal history: I come from the Straight Blast Gym. My coach Matt Thornton helped Randy prepare for the UFC. Matt did several video series called FJKD or Functional Jeet Kune Do (which essentially means MMA in today's terms). One of the interesting narratives was that traditional martial arts techniques wouldn't work against solid fundamental wrestling, you can't throw a fancy kick because you'll get taken down, and Randy was used as a prime example to demonstrate this point. To see Lyoto use the CRANE KICK, the kick that is literally associated with Karate Kid to defeat Randy Couture - it was absolutely mind blowing at the time and to this day I still don't think people fully appreciate how interesting this moment was within MMA.
This man fought the best at their best. A true warrior.

Kiiyon your content has really help me get in to the amazing sport that's is mma thank you
Ayeeee my comment made it on the vid! Thanks Kiiyon🐐
Interesting how I haven’t looked at Lyoto in years and all of a sudden I wanted to and this video was made a week ago. Strange coincidence? Thank you for making this great video!
One of the best analysis of Macheda I've seen.
I cant explain why , but this one gave me goosebumps. Right at the end when you were talking about his level of competition. IM not even a huge Machida fan. You just do a real good job Kiiyon. DAMN I love fighting!
Very nice story telling. Thanks.
A true samurai, always going for the maxim "one hit, one kill", and managing it a lot of times.
Great video . Us karate practitioners love this man .
Great video. Very objective and accurate assessment I'd say.
So glad we got this, thanks!
One of my favorite fighters of all time. I really appreciate the work you put into your vids.
9/10 rating i agree! he was one of my favorites back then.
Awesome well said. This is crazy Managed to get majority of his highlights In a very short time and you hit the nail on the coffin machida is my favorite fighter I just got to spar him a few days ago so I had to come back and look at his highlights, amazing job
Pretty much this. Remember there was a time when people literally thought it was impossible for wheel kicks to work in mma lol.
