Minji Teaches Korean you speak Japanese?
Great lesson! Can you tell us when we should use -어/아야 했다 ? I think the concept of -어/아야 하다 is different. It means "must" or "have to" which is different from what you're teaching here as "should have". But I'm confused. 감사합니다!
William Kelley Sure! I'm planning to cover that subject too :)

진짜 쉽게 이해해요 ^^ 감사합니다 예쁜 선생님 😘
Sumin ryu 감사합니다
It’s funny how those exact sentences in my head that I want to translate while watching this are also the sample sentences hahahahaha what a coincidence.
Thanks a lot this was really easy to understand! 👍❤ I have a question, how would I say for example my friend or (name of any other person) should/ shouldn't have [...] ?
K ᗩ I Z ᗩ Well in that case using '었/았/했어야 했는데' would be better..! I'm sorry if I'm making you confused now
For example 'Minji should have gone to the party' is '민지가 파티에 갔었어야 했는데' (가다 + 었어야 했다)
And 'James should have eaten breakfast' is '제임스가 아침을 먹었어야 했는데'
올 지 말걸 그랬어요,파티에 가지 말걸 그랬어요, are these right???
AWESOME
Very helpful👌
Preciosa Voz, !!!!!
But google translate argues this pattern saying it means "I thought I'd" or "was going to" just an FYI.
I LOVE YOUR VOICE💖💖💖💖
파티에 갈걸 그랬어요. =?= 파티에 갔어야 했어요. 두 문장은 차이가 있나요? 아무 누앙스라든지?
I tried hard to search the song xD haha I thought it was an ost from "While you were sleeping" but it wasnt xD I am learning Korean best with your videos 정말 감사합니다
John Ray Llavan Oh that song is 친구라도 될 걸 그랬어 by 거미!! :) 감사합니다😁😁
MinJi 선생님,
These 2 structures can be used with he/she/It/we/they or are an excepcion as "shall" in English?
If I write this way "먹지말 걸 그래요" It will mean "shouldn't eat" for example?
고마워요, 선생님!!
Since 'we' is including me, so 'we should have' will share the same conjugation as 'I should have'. The other parties such as he or they will share the same conjugation as 'you'. Am i correct?
I’m kinda late but I have a question. How about you are talking about we? Like “We should’ve …”. Would it be -걸 그랬어요 or -지 그랬어요? I have a hunch that it’s 걸 그랬어요 but I’m not completely sure. Also, I think I’ve heard people drop the 그랬어(요) and just say 걸. For example, something like 집에 가지 말걸. Is that okay to say too?
Well when it comes to 'We', you can put 저희가 (for formal) or 우리가 (for informal) at the beginning of the sentence. For example 저희가 살 걸 그랬어요 (We should've bought) or 우리가 갈 걸 그랬어(We should've gone) But I think Koreans usually omit the subject a lot especially in the spoken language so it's okay to just say 걸 그랬어요 / 지 그랬어요 :)
And yes Koreans drop 그랬어요 a lot!
So you can say 집에 가지 말 걸 ^^
Also I say ' 조금만 먹을 걸' a lot these days 😂 It means 'I should've eaten less'
Minji Teaches Korean 민지 티치 코리안 ok thank you so much!!
That was great thanks :) two questions tho.
How about when talking about the present, like "I should do..."? Is 할걸 그래요 correct?
Also, when using -시 honorifics, any special rule to observe? Or i can just go 드시지 그랬습니다/하시지 말지 그랬습니다 ?
skylinrg 'Should' and 'Should have' is different in Korean. Should is '-/어/아/야 돼요' or '-/어/아/야 해요'
So for example, 'should go' is '가야 돼요' or '가야 해요'
And 'should eat' is '먹어야 돼요' or '먹어야 돼요'
I'll cover about this soon! So.. pls wait for it
And you have to put the 시 honorifics to the verb at the end! Ex) 그러+시+었어요 -> 그러셨어요
So You shouldnt have done is '하지 말지 그러셨어요' in really formal language!
선생님 대답하셔서 고맙습니다~
So... does it mean there's no difference between "have to" and "should"? Sorry I'll wait for you to cover it :D
Please also cover -야지 and -야겠다 if you may :)
그리고... 선생님 영어를 어떻게 배우셨는지 궁굼해요 :) 억수로 잘 아세요~ 한국어 가르쳐 주셔서 너무 고맙고요 ㅠㅠ
@@minjiteacheskorean oh my gosh i have been looking for an explanation for this FOREVER!!! I thought I had to negate 어야 되다 with 안 somewhere! Thank you thank you
지금 먹지 그래써요!
supop beautifull
i didn't know i should use~ "
지" 그랬어when i wanted to say "You"should have~🙀🙀🙀
Hi! What is the verb stem of “진작”? And why is it 진작 and 일찍 has the same meaning yet different spelling in korean?
어떻게요?
4:30 here you say ‘earlier’ is ‘일찍‘ but before in the video you said ‘진작’ means ‘earlier’. what is the difference?
Can someone explain the difference between 갈 걸 그랬다 and 갔을 텐데?
👍👍👍
Eonni , Can You explain that in exeption of [kor/l] conjugation .... how to know the verb that ends in consonant but we have to attach [r/l kol ] i mean is there any way to know?
안녕하세요 언니♡
안녕하세요~~
Can I ask something?
I always hear 안했어야지 or 갔어야지 type of sentences in dramas :) and they are also translated as I shouldn't have or I should have. Is there a difference or is it the same?
your voice is soo sweet and you sing very well i like your videos ,, love from india
kriti tomar 안녕하세요!!😁😁 Thank you so much!
kriti tomar omg... im indian too... hello...
shoulda = should’ve (should have)
YOUR VOICEEEE 💓
Google translate does not like this form of should have or should not have. Wonder why it doesn't get it?
Hi! I love your videos! I'm an intermediate learner and they are very helpful! How could I say " should have/ shouldn't have" in honorifics? Thank You!!
Norah Al Johani 안녕하세요! 'I should have / shouldn't have' in honorifics is '-걸 그랬어요 /-지 말걸 그랬어요' , just like I covered in this video.
And 'You should have / shouldn't have' in honorifics is '-지 그러셨어요 / -지 말지 그러셨어요' :)
Ex) 먹지 말지 그랬어요(formal)
드시지 말지 그러셨어요(Very formal)
드시다 is a humble form of 먹다(eat) 😁😁
Thank you!!!
I have another question that isn't related to this video, but to how I should use the formal or honorifics. I live near a Korean Cultural Center, should I use the formal language of honorifics to speak to the people who work there? Thank You again!!!
Well it depends on how you are close with them but in general using the formal language would be better. So I think if you are not too close with them or not sure what to use, just use '요' form:) Like 안녕하세요, 식사 하셨어요?, 어디 가세요?, etc. And if you want to say sth in formal way, use the '습니다' form!
I always use '~습니다' form when I work at a company or I'm with my professor. I'm like '알겠습니다' or '~고 생각합니다.' Oh, and also when I give a presentation, I use 습니다 a lot !
Minji Teaches Korean Thank you again!!!
