@@WalR- I just spent 3 days about 2-3hr every day learning the 1st 8 bars of a way too complex song for me to play. But daily I noticed the better progress and now I can play those bars somewhat perfectly. The difficult thing is just, keeping yourself motivated to keep going at it. There are a lot of tools that can make you listen to the song and repeat it at half speed or even 25% if you require. Also don't look at how skilled someone is, just look at their hands and what they do with them and try to learn from it.

I know this may sound kind of silly but I started a little "Positive Music Thoughts" journal. Whenever I feel frustrated or down I write down what I have accomplished recently with my playing and other positive things. Whenever I start getting down on myself about my playing I open up that journal, read the last entry and then write down something I got better at since then. Inevitably I have gotten better at something since the last entry. The more positive you feel about your playing the more often you'll play and the more confidence you'll have.

Yeah being positive and everything etc etc. I think everyone has walls or boundaries. For someone learning tracks like Polyphia - G.O.A.T or some Malmsteen's solos will take 2 or 3 years while others will reach high level faster and they can play it after a few weeks without major problems. People try to convince themselves that "sky is the limit". Bruh. It isn't. Some techniques or songs are so complicated that you need to SINK so much time. Like A LOT. It is not about practice everyday "for a little". None can convince me "daily practice" (which need to consist of arpeggios, shredding, learning how much strength of your left hand its required to make sound clean (step to become faster), synch both hands plus grinding technique like economic picking and alternative picking) can be like 15 minutes. And again - no, you can't focus on one thing everyday. It's simple - your muscle memory will forget one thing that you only teach yourself once in a week or twice. So yeah - why are there so many godly guitarists ? They grind their skills like everyday for 3 or 4 hours (yeah even Nick Johnstons said that - he "locked himself in a room and play as much as he could"). You need to become obsessed about guitar. I don't talk about being able to "0-3-5 faster". I am talking about being at Rings of Saturn or First Fragment level.

A few pieces of advice that I've learned, some of them don't really fit in a technique video but I'd give them away for free to anyone who'd care to listen:
    1. I've been playing for a little less than a year and a half. I started at 37. 37 years old. Seriously. I'm 39 now. Playing in church, and I love it. Piece of advice number one? To paraphrase a Chinese Proverb, the best time to start was 20+ years ago. The second best time to start is now.
    2. Find something you enjoy hearing that is slightly above your skill level. Play up, not down, if you want to grow. I started with the opening riff to Long Cool Woman. Fun, achievable, and I keep coming back to it.
    3. Find something you enjoy hearing/playing that you can reliably come back to and play well, so that when you're frustrated at the difficulty of learning something new you can relieve the tension by playing something that you know you can play well.
    4. Bonus: have fun. It's called playing guitar, not working guitar. Play. Not that it's all fun all the time, but it should be a net fun experience. If it isn't then you're probably pushing yourself too hard and need to relax a bit before you burn out.

I just finished the video. I primarily played clarinet from 6-12g. My senior I was first chair clarinet, And I became drum major. I learned some percussion and brass parts, I got offered a full ride scholarship for being distinguished on my instrument. I also was in my band directors guitar class my senior year. Guitar 1, it was very intro. I stuck with it in and out. And learned a lot in band. My best tips are: learn fundamentals. They are so important. Hand placements and strumming techniques are good to learn, especially in rock, also in acoustic too. Learn how to tune without a tuner, or maybe just for the root (standard) E, and go from there! (The 5, 5, 5, 4, 5) .. I play rock primarily now. Scales are important, learn different genres- it helps sculpt who you want to be as a player. Follow your idols!!! Find out what brands they use and playing techniques, and tunings ! Also, RESEARCH THE ORIGINALS! Not just the artist you see today. Thanks so much for reading. Music is powerful! ❤️

An old chord melody troubadour taught me sonething.
      I asked him
"Your playing stuff that has 3 4... 6 musicians in the band, you're one guy, how?"
He replied " The audience knows the songs, they will hear all of what Im not playing in their head.". He was right.

@@flashroyal9933 Hope you’re enjoying what you’re doing and improving! Recording yourself, especially with metronome, helps you hear where the beat lines up to your playing. This reveals blind spots that your ear missed the first time around. Essentially, this applies to all mistakes. The first time you play, your ear only processes and identifies a portion of your mistakes. Listening back a couple times reveals many mistakes you may not have know the first time around. But don’t forget to practice with a metronome (don’t overdo it- don’t use it for everything all the time). Good luck on your progress!

Great video thanks. Tuning - the lost art. When I learnt we didn’t have tuners. I would listen to Radio Luxembourg for half an hour before going to bed and play along with the songs. Not only did this help with recognising chord progressions, it also meant I had to retune for every song while it was running as they didn’t have tuners in the studios either and recording to vinyl often raised or lowered pitch by a few cents. After a few weeks, I could retune by ear within about 15 seconds and recognise most pop progressions by ear too. A word of warning though, tabs, digital tuners and precise A440 recordings mean you lose those abilities.

It helps for chord inversions, and it helped explain the bump.
I'm using the circle of fifths chord progression on strings 1-3 and 2-4 (ukulele only has four strings) in the G Major chord at first. Then will come E minor, and only then will I worry about the others. I want to Satrianisize my knowledge first.

Question: Should I focus my practice sessions solely on doing different variations of the same scale untill i can play any notes from that scale with fluidity and speed(For example learning ALL the different variations of the A Major Scale to the point where I could close my eyes and instinctively know where all the notes of the A Major scale are)

Your question is two years old but I would focus on the major and minor Pentatonix and that would be most of what you need

Thanks for this video, it's just what I needed, My question is about what can I do to learn more chords and be able to improve my earing?

    • @pepperoni101.

Learn songs! Try different genres. And I'd advice, sing them too. Learn ur favorite songs, just strum the chords. And if u want to learn more chords, maybe transpose some songs and the chords will become more of #'s and flats so then put a capo and learn those chords maybe. Hope this helps!

I bought my guitar a couple days ago and I felt like a absolute god when I was trying to play the opening solo sounding part from bat out of hell and I realized that at one part where tthere is a note and the next note is just one down on the fret board on the same string and I could (I also think it is how it is done in the song) just bend the string to take it to that next note.

Sorry, can't leave any tips on how to get better - started when I was 14. 30 years later, I still just play some open chords. But I do own a PRS!!! :D

Timing is crucial. I use a metronome in every practice. Some guitarists play well but off-beat, which ruins my impression. I aim to avoid that mistake.

I took the time this last month to learn all the notes. I can't name every note cold out of the blue yet but i can do the natural notes. What that means is you know the note without referencing another note to find what it is. Satriani is right.

My biggest difficulty has always been some strumming/galloping patterns out there I just can't get my hand to do or just have a hard time understanding the rhythm. Like seriously I can sweep pick better than I can do the galloping section of raining blood.
I'm like better at advance techniques than I am at intermediate stuff. Which I find very weird and annoying

idk i can play as an intermediate, but im still a beginner in theory and solos and scales i just dont know them ...but this is gonna motivate me to get better in that aspect....i been owning a guitar for 25 years but i have only been playing decent guitar for 15 and believe it or not been recording on my computer with fruityloops and stuff for 20 lol and only have been good at guitar for 4 years now and im back to being rusty after a few months of not practice.....i guess what im trying to say is practice dont be like me and expect to write music and play perfect in the first few years depending on you and never expect to be successful or famous ever.. because likely you wont, you might have a slot once a week for like 100 bucks to 500 but anyone looking to travel and tour with solo or band it takes a certain kind of person to do that not likle most of us just jamming our room as a teen maybe you will be able to supplement your income but did you bands like mudhoney now have to hold down a job and they were a platinum selling artist at one time

I'm kind of scared of learning songs because I know how horrible I'm at guitar and that learning songs will only get me more frustrated and disappointed. I prefer to stay on the same steady ground with my daily exercises although I know it won't get me much further in my playing.

So you’ll never get better. If ur comfortable being a beginner for the rest of ur life good on u. But u can’t feel bad about it. It’s ur choice. If you wanted to be better you would be.
