Ukraine made a serious mistake, which will only speed up the collapse of the Ukrainian military.
The troops they allocated to this offensive are way too small to even threaten a city the size of Kursk and the only other viable target in the area is the Kursk nuclear power plant.
The Ukrainians didn't manage to reach this target and stranded about 25 km from this location. If they would have managed to take control of this plant in the first 72 hours of their offensive, it would have been a major success, but now the Russians already brought the situation back under control and what is described in the west as a major win, will eventually turn into a major defeat.
Russia already prepared a significant defense belt around this plant and short of a small miracle, Ukraine will not be able to breach these defensive's.
The intention was, most probably, to capture the Kursk nuclear plant and offer it as a bargain chip to return the control of the ZNNP back to Ukraine.
To do so, they needed to re-deployed a lot of their forces and armor from the other front line positions, where the Ukrainians were already overextended, and use their last experienced reserves.
Ukraine can not retreat without losing face completely and are now stuck in an area deep inside Russia where they have no reliable supply lines to support and re-supply these troops properly.
Russia will gradually destroy these forces and their heavy equipment, depriving Ukraine from desperately needed equipment and the biggest part of it's well trained, experienced and battle hardened soldiers.
Since the area has no strategic value, Russia is not in a hurry to retake it and will not engage in a full scale counter offensive, but will mainly use stand-off weapons to gradually destroy the Ukrainians on their territory.
Ukraine may have gained another media victory, but the moral boost their troops will get out of this will be short lived and will backfire when Russia finally takes back control of the small villages and hamlets the Ukrainians were able to occupy in this offensive.
Meanwhile, Russia is taking advantage of the situation to make ever more gains on front line positions, where the Ukrainians are now critically undermanned.
Positions like the one's in central Donbas are critical for the Ukrainian defensive and if they lose these cities, the whole Ukrainian defense east of the Dnieper will collapse.
Any attentive listener will have noticed that Russia will no longer negotiate with the current Ukrainian government and is rather going for an all out military defeat of the Ukrainian forces.
Ukraine had several chances to end the conflict diplomatically, often on very favorable terms, but threw them all away.
They will now have to bare the consequences of their belligerence.

I'm always speaking to myself about Russia to act first before the enemy acts. Putin is patient for his neighboring country because those are his people, but if west is pushing harsh, Putin will reach his anger limit. There's nothing harder for mr Putin.

Post 2014, Kiev/Kyiv was the aggressor. January 2022 Donbas was being shelled daily and to the greatest extent in years. Russia initially amassed troops to force Ukraine back to the negotiating table. After a limited invasion, it worked and a deal was outlined in Istanbul April 2022. Hardline Ukrainian Nationalists were behind the 2014 maidan massacre and subsequent violence. Dmytro Yarosh, former leader of Right Sector who claimed to have coordinated the Odessa Trade unions building massacre, was hired by commander in chief Zaluzhnyi 2021. Yarosh in 2019 said Zelensky would be hung from a tree if he implemented the Minsk agreements.
