- FiiO's new M11S is a bargain full-Android portable music player (DAP) which is just at home with Bluetooth headphones, supporting LDAC and APTx, as it is with wired IEMs. It can also be installed in a car with "Car Mode" that has it switching on and off automatically. I compare it to the M11 Plus ESS and Hiby R6 2020 with both IEMs and full-sized headphones.

I've been using my M11s with my HD600 and Ananda for a little over a month now and my experience has been great I can even run both at the same time through the balance output. The only real negative thing i had against it was the no lock function but using an app i was able to stop the volume from going up or down while it was in my pocket.

I realise Bluetooth is the normal way to access your music in this scenario but I am not able to utilise 2 devices through Bluetooth (phone and another device), I need to keep my phone connected via Bluetooth. Can this be set to USB mode like the m11 to connect to a Mac and appear as an external drive ? That’d be very useful for transferring all my ALAC tunes to the DAP.
Are replacement batteries available when inevitably the battery will need to be replaced? If so what is the procedure for replacing?
I bought the M11 Plus about a week ago, I was actually thrilled it does not come with a camera! This is amusing to me, because I grew up when CELLphones were just getting cameras and I remember how heavily that feature was promoted, I remember people going out of their way to find a phone WITHOUT a camera (like my Dad) because at the time some places would not allow you to bring in a camera, imagine the headaches because everyone and their Mother's cellphone was now coming with a camera.
But now that you mention the QR codes, yeah having no camera makes that impossible, but I love treating this as a offline device without a camera.

A great player but it won't connect to Mac, It would be nice to find a site that I could buy, and download to it. Ive bought a load of music but haven't been able to put any of it on the player.

The FiiO has more features that work with the customisable button on the side, and a couple of other unique features. Other than that, streaming apps worked fine for me.
Ive had to put music on my old a55 walkman, pull the card and put it in the m11s to get any music on the player.

Just wondering can the Sennheiser HD 660s which is a 150 impedance headphone with a sensitivity of 104 db/1V be able to get enough volume from the Fiio M11s.
I know this is incredibly late, however I use the HD600 which is 300ohms and I never have to increase volume past 85 running it through a balanced cable of course.
How does the M11s compare to an Astell&Kern Kann Alpha? For someone that doesn't pretend to use it with 1k usd iems/headphones (maybe a he6se).
Is it worth the 2x price difference?
You need a desktop amp with the HE6SE and similar. Portable gear of any kind will not do.

How many hours of playback/burn-in do you run on any DAP before making a sound review?
Depends on the DAP and what the manufacturer recommends. ESS and AKM-based DAPs, for example, don't change over time. Specialist designs, like the R2R and DSD DAPs (eg: Cayin N7) I leave playing for a few days first.

I doubt it. You'd only switch for the convenience of being able to store your music and play it back on one device.

If you have equivalent quality IEMs or headphones and listen to well-recorded music, it might.
So, the M11s is slower by one hour than the M11ESS.

Some apps use QR codes to be set up from one device to another. It's a massive PITA if you can't scan one. You have to screenshot it, then somehow send it to the device, which is a lot more hassle.
Buying a good music players these days is like choosing a water brand. Yeah its slightly different. But its still way overpriced for what you get. My S9+ is indistinguishable from my Hiby. In a blind test you will never hear the difference.
yeah, indistinguishable until you try to run inneficient headphones. my he400se lose detail and volume from the jack on my phone and those headphones got to 100usd at one point, they're not the most technical or hard to drive pair in the market
It is very difficult for me to understand how the $179 DAPs are supposed to be soooo much better than normal MP3 players.
Then these $500 ones are supposed to provide an even better sound.
But they also sell $3,500 ones!

Yes, it's crazy. It's particular, mostly, to HK and other parts of Asia, where the hi-fi hobby is condensed this way.

The notion that a dap should be used with a headphone at a certain price point is just so asinine I don’t know what to say. This is the idiotic bs people hate about audiophiles. More money doesn’t mean better but I guess there’s gotta be suckers out there who fall for this.
Nobody is saying "should". I regularly talk to people who were disappointed with an expensive headphone or IEM purchase who discover that their cheaper gear was much of the reason for that. There are hard limits at what can be done at certain price points with electronics, and that results in sacrifices to designs that are clearly audible.

Someone has to subsidize the price of good enough gear for the rest of us who can’t hear a difference in a double blind test.
