+Raukawahine77 How do you know it wasn't alcohol he tried first? Or pills from his parents medicine cabinet? Lots of people do those before they ever smoke pot. I've seen far more people try hard drugs like coke, meth, and opiates for the first time after heavy drinking then after they smoked pot. I know plenty of pot smokers who have never touched anything else. I know plenty of people who've done coke or gotten into popping pills who never smoked weed. The "gateway drug" argument has no weight. The same type of argument makes a far more compelling case for alcohol or even more so caffeine being the actual gateway drug.
I'm a fan of STP from day 1, bought Core when it was first released, even before I heard the jokes people had about it. The 2 biggest bands in the world at the time were Nirvana & Pearl Jam, and SNL made fun, specifically David Spade made fun of STP saying it sounded like Pearl Jam, I can vaguely hear Eddie Vedder's inspiration in Plush's chorus but every single other STP song sounds nothing like Pearl Jam. People wrote them off because Plush was their first big single. I bought every STP album until the end and despite what losers say and think, STP is one of the great rock bands of the 90s, up there with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins.
I think it takes a vocal genius to sound like both Kurt Cobain AND Eddie Vedder on the same album. People can say what they want about Core, but it was a more solid album than Nevermind and Ten (yes, I said it lol) and if anything, it was really smart and really talented to be able to match the sound of the two biggest bands at the time.

It's cuz the STP guys came from a hard rock background, not punk rock like most of the early underground grunge brands, so they put a lot more emphasis on clean musicianship than bands like Mudhoney or Nirvana did. STP were immediately signed to a major label instead of working their way up through the underground, and I think the types of bands who get immediately signed to majors tend to be the ones who are more career-oriented and disciplined enough to work on polishing up their musicianship. Soundgarden probably were the most musically complex grunge band though, cuz lots of their songs used deceptively off-kilter time signatures.
Dave Mustaine is a really good interview. He is so articulate and honest. Yes he might have an ego like Ted Nugent but he's been to the brink with drugs/booze and got out of it. People should listen to his message. But they sadly will not.....
Dave went through his battles and gave him friendly advice but people have to learn on their own, Scott was an awesome artist though no doubt about it, I got all his STP stuff and know every song... Just hope he was right with God. RIP
Everyone lives and sings a different song... I'm just thankful to be enjoying a lifetime of melody left behind from Scott Weiland. RIP. And Dave... You Are One In A Million... One of the best. Cheers!
He was talking about No memory/Sin....if you watch their 93 shows, they open with crackerman and then fall into that groove with No Memory. He's right about this lol
Legit. Everyone says "Dave's so arrogant" but you can't be arrogant when you actually ARE one of the best! If Dave gave me advice on fucking anything I would damn well do it.
You know what pisses me off worse than anything when somebody makes fun of somebody cause they got an addiction. It don't mean your a horrible person if you have an addiction. Maybe a troubled person just look at Scott Wieland for example a sweet person that was troubled. One day I heard someone saying I can't stand a stupid drug addict and I got pissed and I said. Look dude, people who do drugs don't make them bad, some are the sweetest people, and some are my friends don't be talking like that when I'm around
addictions hard even when you're not famous. the problems usually happen when they quit for a while, then think they can do that same amount before they quit. which usually results in ODing accidentally. then theirs the purity of the drug, you never know what youre buying on the streets. thanks for sharing Dave!
wow the way dave tells it straight is so refreshing and he gives a shit plus he has lived through it all seen it all and watched the weak fall victim to the enablers.....well put dave.
I was never a fan of Megadeth and always had a dislike for Mustaine in particular for numerous reasons, but this interview alone has earned him some of my respect. Being a huge STP fan, it was cool of Dave to respectfully make some helpful suggestions to the band, it showed a genuine interest and passion for their music.
he is 100% correct when he said "there are others responsible" ...if people are flaunting it in your face, its only a matter of time before that demon wins....RIP Scott and I really wish Scott would have taken Dave's advice
I saw '92 tour in Hartford CT. STP opened for Megadeth, nobody ever heard of them on the east coast, but their power was unmistakable and they kicked ass that show
Dave is and always has been such a wise person. He wasn’t going to let getting kicked out of a huge band stop him from his own legacy. I think that was the best thing that could have happened because he rocked harder with MD In my opinion
I only listened to Scott's music,I might of heard yours on FM radio & don't know... so , Herion.Yeah, I could see the difference between the acoutic Scott & the bullhorn Scott. Loved both of them.I
I've been a heroin addict since 2006 but started like most do just popping a few vicodin on the weekends to relax.W hat this drug has put me through is just god awful. I've probably spend a good 5 years of that time dope sick if you add up all the days and withdrawal is hell on earth. I have scars all over from infections and suicide attempts and still i live in fear that something's going to happen where I can't get my methadone. "I'm 35 and live with my mom in the UK where treatment is free, but I've lost everything, EVERYTHING! she flew me out here after I put myself in a coma for the 3rd time" This drug takes your soul and shits all over it
James P man sounds really bad. I hope you can get off it and get help you need. What dose it feel like taking heroin? I never had any drug apart from weed.
+LAYUCHEBI it's a Euphoria, if you go from not using straight to heroin , you're gonna fuckin od cause u got no tolerance, just about everypne starts off like I did, just popping them pharma's like hydrocodone, have you ever had Dilaudid in the hospital after a surgery? that's the same shit. actually even as a 10+ year junkie, I still preferred hydromorphone to heroin, thsts Dilaudid. the rush you get from IV is intense. it's like busting nut but over your entire body , goes down your spine. it's pure bliss for about 15 seconds but man, it becomes ALL ALLLLLL ABOUT getting well and staying well as long as possible, running from withdrawal is all it becomes, u shoot up just to get unsick u don't even get high anymore. shit I hadn't had a good nod since like 2009
+LAYUCHEBI but I'm doin loads better , I'm down to 60mg methadone and on a taper, I got fucking awesome friends on tumblr that talk me thru shit and are always there for me, real friends. emphasis on real! u can't beat it by yourself. I've also come out about my molestation as a kid by my father and I hadn't spoken about that shit to anyone. probably the root of all my fucked up problems. no doubt ... so yeah been doin alot of self discovery, learning to trust people and open up. it's a long uncomfortable process, but shit will change unless you're willing to do those kinds of things. thanks for your concern mate. I appreciate hearing anypne give a fuck , means a lot
I really LOVE the fact that he mentions the Milli Vanilli guy... I love when the "underdog" or someone you wouldnt even think of is given recognition and respect! Yay Dave!
+Nigel Fortune Because they say it's the best high ever. I don't know who said it, but they try to replicate the very first time they do it and end up becoming slaves to the needle.
+Nigel Fortune One of the few musicians who did something potent like acid only once because he knew that he'd never get the same perfect high again was Ron Asheton from The Stooges. Iggy did heroin, Navarro did heroin, Al Jourgensen did heroin... many people did that shit and found it extremely hard to quit. Lemmy never tried it because a girl he loved died by the needle, if I'm not mistaken.
when your a rock musician you walk around full of passion, It is very hard for your ego to just deflate during down time ..and it becomes a real dangerous liability . drugs become a way to soothe this transition... sometimes at a deadly cost.

I saw you guys in Nashville. I knew who STP WAS. Thank you Dave. Still have my stub. It says Jan. 15 1993. I remember it so well. They even put STP s name on the stub also.
wise words Mr. Mustaine...but people with addiction have to fight their own demons... no amount of rehab will cure that...they have to want to do it or its not going to happen...no one forced him to do drugs ...this is the road he chose and now he is lost
Man, I thought he was about to say a whole lotta crap, but instead he said stuff that actually makes a lot of sense, and if this is all true, well crap, he kinda "made" STP the band it become!
Out of every grunge bands from the 90s, Stone Temple Pilots with Scott Weiland stage performance is probably the most Excited to watch anytimes. We don't know what he would do in his next move to surprise us. His crazy moves just sync so well with the STP Rock Style. I stopped followed his stuff with Velvet Revolver and anything he did after that. Scott's charm works perfectly only when he was in STP. Anything else he tried on his own doesn't makes him glows. Today is 2022, i listened back to his Top 3 albums. 'Purple' & 'Tiny music' just purely outshined the others 90s Grunge Top-selling albums which the mass audiences loves. STP music stands their eccentric sound for certain class of rock listener. STP creates elegancy melodies that is not easily spotted in others Grunge/Alternative Rock albums.
Of course Dave made the band huge, he also invented thrash metal, had a hand in the Hadron Collider, advises the Daila Lama daily and is on his way to be sainted himself. Mustaine invented everything or showed bands how to get huge, according to Mustaine. The ego is amazing on this guy.
+heres johnny Actually, he really is that good, but maybe not in all the exact ways you said. Mustaine is a huge talent, huge huge, and he did help put a lot of big things in motion.
"Oh yeah, really sad about Scott there... on that note, I was the one who made him big... and hell, while we're at it, fuck it, I'll go ahead and take credit for the addiction that took him too! Why the hell not. After all, I'm Dave Mustaine!"
+sparkymoo It's only thing a real man can talk about...because you don't know what is in other people minds or how they see, feel etc. Other than that it would just be condescending...but whatever.
+sparkymoo The funny thing is that they were probably doing the same before the set-list advice as after. Or if they improved with the audience, other factors may have been involved. But Dave, before the advice, was probably sitting there all anxious and frustrated, and after the advice was probably standing on the side, watching with a father like pride over the child he helped raise. Suddenly, after the great advice, they were doing fabulous. Thanks Dad, I mean Dave. Now that he's dead, way to get one last ego boost out of it.
I went to their concert in 92...nobody knew who the hell stp(mighty jo young)was, they opened for Megadeath & STP fqn ROCKD it-I was a fan from that point on. I was 17
Am I the only one noticing the fact that Mustaine is taking full credit for turning STP from a mediocre warm-up act to the powerhouse they became via pure force-of-advice? Anytime I see a Dave Mustaine interview I feel there are two people being interviewed - Dave and Dave's Ego.
I saw STP and Blind Melon open for Neil Young w/Booker T and the MGs, L.A. Sports Arena. Scott and Shannon were both ON!! They were great frontmen, at least that day. I saw Scott a few years later at a gig on HDTV, after he got sober. He just wasn't the same animal. R I P
If the so-called "drugs" were legal, Scott would experiment with mushrooms or weed, and not with the synthetic garbage like coke and heroin :( Here in Brazil we lost a local rockstar (if it's possible to exist such a thing lol) a few weeks after Scott died, the guy was called Jupiter Maca and was known to be always changing appearance and sound in every album, just like Scott and Bowie. But a friend of his said on the internet: "We lost this man because of a legal drug that you can find on every corner: alcohol." Stupid laws made by stupid people.
Good advice from a guy that was doped up, blown out when I met him in Saginaw Mi. He was a hero until that day. Glad that he has kicked and is still rocking!

Soundgarden probably were the most musically complex grunge band though, cuz lots of their songs used deceptively off-kilter time signatures.
because robert wrote most of the songs/melodies.
Dave is right.. and so true that it is a huge loss... :(
Dave Mustaine is a really good interview.
Cheers!
Every year on the anniversary of Scott’s passing, I watch this video. It’s very heartwarming for Dave to share the story.
I have a newfound respect for Dave.
iamjeona Who are you?
Good on you for standing up. Sometimes people are way too quick to judge.
No you're absolutely right just keep your stuff locked up.. if you own anything of value..
Dave is a smart, caring guy.
Dave is such a legend.
addictions hard even when you're not famous. the problems usually happen when they quit for a while, then think they can do that same amount before they quit. which usually results in ODing accidentally. then theirs the purity of the drug, you never know what youre buying on the streets. thanks for sharing Dave!
That's called the spin cycle
Love the way dave says "cheeky"
wow the way dave tells it straight is so refreshing and he gives a shit plus he has lived through it all seen it all and watched the weak fall victim to the enablers.....well put dave.
Rest in peace Scott. You will be sorely missed by so many. ) : His passing at 48, my age, makes me want to take better care of myself.
How are you now after 7 years?
He also died
Dave taking credit for STP’s set list and subsequent success.
Yeah, that’s Dave for ya.
You should do fact or fiction with dave
willr455 hard to do when everything said is probably true.
-some metalhead
"I rearranged their setlist and they took off".
Such a modest guy, Dave.
he is 100% correct when he said "there are others responsible" ...if people are flaunting it in your face, its only a matter of time before that demon wins....RIP Scott and I really wish Scott would have taken Dave's advice
That makes many many of us fans
It sucks to learn about Scott's death. RIP Your music lives on...
In my opinion, this guy is criminally underrated as an artist. He's a brilliant guy.
nah
Mustaine always sharp
I saw stp with megadeth in el Paso tx it was awesome
I saw '92 tour in Hartford CT. STP opened for Megadeth, nobody ever heard of them on the east coast, but their power was unmistakable and they kicked ass that show
R.I.P Scotty
Dave is and always has been such a wise person. He wasn’t going to let getting kicked out of a huge band stop him from his own legacy. I think that was the best thing that could have happened because he rocked harder with MD In my opinion
I only listened to Scott's music,I might of heard yours on FM radio & don't know... so , Herion.Yeah, I could see the difference between the acoutic Scott & the bullhorn Scott. Loved both of them.I
dave is awesome
James P sorry to hear that man
+LAYUCHEBI it's a Euphoria, if you go from not using straight to heroin , you're gonna fuckin od cause u got no tolerance, just about everypne starts off like I did, just popping them pharma's like hydrocodone, have you ever had Dilaudid in the hospital after a surgery? that's the same shit. actually even as a 10+ year junkie, I still preferred hydromorphone to heroin, thsts Dilaudid. the rush you get from IV is intense. it's like busting nut but over your entire body , goes down your spine. it's pure bliss for about 15 seconds but man, it becomes ALL ALLLLLL ABOUT getting well and staying well as long as possible, running from withdrawal is all it becomes, u shoot up just to get unsick u don't even get high anymore. shit I hadn't had a good nod since like 2009
+LAYUCHEBI but I'm doin loads better , I'm down to 60mg methadone and on a taper, I got fucking awesome friends on tumblr that talk me thru shit and are always there for me, real friends. emphasis on real! u can't beat it by yourself.
Good luck man, hope you can beat it....
I really LOVE the fact that he mentions the Milli Vanilli guy... I love when the "underdog" or someone you wouldnt even think of is given recognition and respect! Yay Dave!
What is it with heroin and musicians? Why do they even touch that shit?! :-/
+CJAdams97 Booze and dope can do that.
+Nigel Fortune Because they say it's the best high ever. I don't know who said it, but they try to replicate the very first time they do it and end up becoming slaves to the needle.
Man thats sad they keep chasing after that first high :-(
+Nigel Fortune One of the few musicians who did something potent like acid only once because he knew that he'd never get the same perfect high again was Ron Asheton from The Stooges. Iggy did heroin, Navarro did heroin, Al Jourgensen did heroin... many people did that shit and found it extremely hard to quit. Lemmy never tried it because a girl he loved died by the needle, if I'm not mistaken.
when your a rock musician you walk around full of passion, It is very hard
for your ego to just deflate during down time ..and it becomes a real dangerous
liability . drugs become a way to soothe this transition...
sometimes at a deadly cost.
I saw STP open for Megadeth. They had just gotten started. What a terrible loss. RIP Scott
You are so right Dave.
Dave has been through IT ALL. A total warrior.
Really!!Thats a musicians job weisle!Dave works his ass off and Megadeath is one the best bands I ever heard and still listen too.On the spot he wrote the song after the tragedy before it became lost and forgotten.Megagadeth was made from scratch a they started out with barely nithing living in abandone warehouses in Cal.and lucky to to aford a beer after work and no elect. and no running water. So look at how Dave started out.
I saw STP with Megadeth on the Countdown tour at Palmer Auditorium in Davenport, Iowa. One of the best concerts I've ever attended!
When Dave Mustaine tells you to stay away from Heroin, you should listen. Dude has done enough of it to know from pounds and pounds of experience.
@@samkinison2375 Wut. Mustaine had 10 different chemicals in his body during the peak of his drug intoxication and addiction and went to rehab 17 times. Heroin, Cocaine, crack and freebase was a huge part of Megadeth's history.
@@samkinison2375 So his drug choice wasn't just alcohol, dummy.
Speedball
@@samkinison2375 Read his fucking book, he smoked freebase everyday with Ellefson and did lines of coke. Dumbfuck. Don't comment on what you don't know.
Awesome segment.
dave has been were scott was and yes megadeth helped stp out. he's done alot and should be given credit for helping other people. take a lession from this metallica.
Dave wow what a thoughtful person you are Man! Mad respect for your honesty and also how passionate you are about live music and other bands that gave your valuable input to a young STP band. Totally impressed with you Dude! Def. will support your band live next time in LA.
Daves right as always.
Dave is down to earth no matter what picture you’ve been painted of him! He is solid to the core, because he has lived it!
"stay away from MY heroin" this was what he really meant..... R.I.P Scott
Every time I hear Dave Mustaine talk about something, I'm impressed at how intelligent and thoughtful he can be.
Interesting stuff. Two of my favorite, if polar-opposite, lyricists.
i was at this tour... it was awesome, i remember stp opening with that song!!
Dave, I totally love you man...
I like how Dave makes it sound like STP would have never made it without him....just by changing the setlist around! lol.....pure genius that Dave is......and i like Dave.
Megadave \m/
I met Scott during the Mighty Joe Young days, very quiet, shy almost. It's very difficult to get anyone to want to recover, Scott included.
This reminds me of when Dave tried to talk Elvis out of doing drugs as well. And when he told Buddy not to get on that plane.
Saw that tour in Battle Creek MI and sure enough they opened with the bullhorn and rocked the set. They did great, such a shame that his talent was cut short. RIP...
Smart guy
I was lucky enough to see STP and Megadeth at the Civic Arena and they open with Sex Type Thing. What a great show.
Dave Mustaine may have helped a lot of people, but he always makes sure EVERYONE KNOWS IT every time he does an interview.
I saw you guys in Nashville. I knew who STP WAS. Thank you Dave. Still have my stub. It says Jan. 15 1993. I remember it so well. They even put STP s name on the stub also.
" Stay away from heroin" Dave said and he could not stress it enough is what i fathomed, right?
He probably told Scott every night on tour to just go back to the bus and avoid the after party.
Still two years later and with the passing of Chester and Chris RIP, it hurts!
wise words Mr. Mustaine...but people with addiction have to fight their own demons... no amount of rehab will cure that...they have to want to do it or its not going to happen...no one forced him to do drugs ...this is the road he chose and now he is lost
And he could have stuck with alcohol and weed. Didn't have to go harder than that.
I saw that tour. megadeth were awesome..
God, I just love and respect this exceptional man! ❤❤❤❤
"Oh yeah, really sad about Scott there... on that note, I was the one who made him big... and hell, while we're at it, fuck it, I'll go ahead and take credit for the addiction that took him too! Why the hell not. After all, I'm Dave Mustaine!"
No song, no performance, no amount of money is worth a human life
- Dave Mustaine
Dave to the rescue ! Somehow I knew he would make it about himself. This guy never changes.
+sparkymoo It's only thing a real man can talk about...because you don't know what is in other people minds or how they see, feel etc.
Other than that it would just be condescending...but whatever.
+sparkymoo
The funny thing is that they were probably doing the same before the set-list advice as after.
Now that he's dead, way to get one last ego boost out of it.
jimmi izzy Exactly. Colossal egomaniacal, self-important, delusional "almost" a rock star.
+sparkymoo The part where he takes credit for STP's success was pretty funny. Fucking egomaniac.
+sparkymoo I thought the exact same thing. I love megadeth and daves guitar playing but damn...he's a cock.
I went to their concert in 92...nobody knew who the hell stp(mighty jo young)was, they opened for Megadeath & STP fqn ROCKD it-I was a fan from that point on. I was 17
God bless you Scott, RIP.
I saw STP open for Megadeth in '92...awesome show!
mustain is the most important man in the history of rock music
Hardly. Even Alan Freed was more important.
I remember so well.
R I P
If the so-called "drugs" were legal, Scott would experiment with mushrooms or weed, and not with the synthetic garbage like coke and heroin :(
Here in Brazil we lost a local rockstar (if it's possible to exist such a thing lol) a few weeks after Scott died, the guy was called Jupiter Maca and was known to be always changing appearance and sound in every album, just like Scott and Bowie. But a friend of his said on the internet: "We lost this man because of a legal drug that you can find on every corner: alcohol."
Stupid laws made by stupid people.
I went to a concert on that tour and they opened with crackerman. Nobody (except like 50 people including me) knew who they were. It was amazing.
Rest in Peace Scott and Layne, the two best vocalists of all time.
May the Lord forgive you for your selfish ways.
It's a hell of a lot more complicated than being selfish.
They are far from being the best vocalists of all time, but RIP nonetheless.
Good advice from a guy that was doped up, blown out when I met him in Saginaw Mi. He was a hero until that day. Glad that he has kicked and is still rocking!
....I was seventeen.
