I don't remember ever reading or hearing one negative thing about him in the short time he was here. And what better testament to his character than his decision (honored by his mother) to donate his organs when he died. A beautiful human being, in every way!
I remember the Chaka Khan song, "I Feel For You", being played in heavy rotation on the radio, around the time of Mr. Hexum's death. For this reason, I could never disassociated that song from this occurrence. I just Googled the songs on the chart in November of 1984 and that song was #1! It's funny how you make associations with events.
Yes! And, I also recall INXS' "The One Thing" as well around the time of hearing of his shooting and death. I think we were watching MTV and flipping around and that song is burned into my memory along with the terribly tragic news. Used to watch him as a kid on Voyagers! and have always felt it was a great loss.
He was a beautiful, talented man. This shouldn't of happened, I was devastated to hear about the accident. I was a sophomore in school then and have never forgot about him.

I felt and still feel very very sad about it. He was such a handsome Gentleman, a rising star of that era.... Ahhhhh... Its all gone. The prop man in charge of weapons should have removed the gun when they had filming delays. Same as on the Alec Baldwin set. Actors who wave weapons around are NOT firearms experts! 🧠
Hexum would been 58 years old if it wasn't for what happened to him in 1984. He would definitely had a successful acting career like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Tom Cruise, etc! It looks like there is a huge lesson for anyone who touches a gun, whether it’s loaded or not!
Agreed. All actors should be properly educated on the dangers of prop guns and blanks. If he was told that shooting the gun at close range would do any type of damage he wouldn't have make that mistake
Damn...this type of tragedy occurred again in the 1993 movie The Crow with Brandon Lee accidentally shot by a prop gun that went wrong And just now in October 2021, a prop gun that went wrong killed a cinematographer and injured the director of a movie being produced by Alec Baldwin...who was holding the prop gun !
Thanks for uploading.. The years go by fast, but his short career in show biz did last.. He is missed to this very day, 28 years after his death... He was one of the greats.
i LOVED this guy, I was a child. a pre-teen. I watched everything he was in, and my heart contained real love for him. So when it happened, I had never experienced grief before.. shock and grief over a loss.. even though I had never met him. I understood though, that although his characters weren't real.. the man was real, and that his loss was a tremendous loss to his family and friends. I also remember being upset about how he couldn't have done that.. how anything that dangerous could be found on a movie set. I thought movies and their sets were make believe. What's a gun doing there.
I remember Jon-Erik Hexum from when I was a kid! I used to see him in his first series called "VOYAGERS",from back in 1982,with Meeno Peluce (brother of "PUNKY BREWSTER" star Soleil-Moon Frye)
I don't get it: don't the network executives teach actors and actresses anything about gun safety BEFORE they work with them on film? I know this is from 1984, but still, you would think Hollywood would have some kind of training for the actors of action TV shows and movies.
Strangely enough, Cover Up was created by Glen A. Larson, who also created Alias Smith and Jones, so he must have been traumatised by the deaths of both Hexum and Duel. Larson himself died in November 2014.
I was 12 when this happened. Had such a crush on him. Loved him on "Cover Up" even if the premise was cheesy. So sad he died so young. The hospital in the video, Beverly Hills Medical Center, no longer exists. It changed hands and is now a Marriott Residence Inn! Not sure I'd ever want to stay there, considering the sheer number of people that died there, including Jon-Erik Hexum. And yes, that is George Clooney's father, Nick Clooney, doing the news. His sister was singer Rosemary Clooney.
NEVER EVER play with a gun. Ever. Even without blanks. Most accidents are caused by "unloaded" guns. He learned this the hard way. Sad story, but it happens more often than you'd think, although not so much with blanks.
Had a classmate die from something similar to this. Accidents are pretty tragic sometimes especially when they are done by people who end their own life in a fraction of an instant.
Not even close to the same situation. I will try to explain in simple terms. Jon-Erik was the result of a huge wad of bunting that was compacted to fit inside the cartridge that had some gunpowder to give it that OOOMPH! on-screen during gunfights. From several feet away there is little to no damage to a person if they are hit. However, that wad being shot from a .44 magnum, with a literal barrel to skin contact was enough to push fragments of Jon's skull into his brain. Jon survived surgery but was brain dead. As for Brandon, the props department didn't have any blanks, so some nitwit decided to "manufacture" some. Except he left the tips of the bullets on the "blanks", so when it was shot, it was a real-life bullet that penetrated Brandon's body--and made mincemeat of his internal organs. Brandon died on the OR table. Both times the fault was with the prop-masters. See, their job is to inspect and secure the weapons. during the break on the TV show, the prop-master allowed Jon to play with the gun when it was supposed to be secured under lock-n-key when they were filming. And on the movie set the prop-master, instead of getting blanks, decided to cut some corners and "invent" some illegal ones. Not close. Not even similar.
@@katemaloney4296 if I recall, they interviewed the actor who played Fun Boy, he was the 9ne that actually shot Lee. Sad, but youre close to what they explained. There was two mistakes made during two scenes that lead to the accident. The first was dummy bullets with the primers still intact, that was enough to lodge a bullet in the barrel of the gun. The second was a blank being fired in that chamber during a second scene that propelled the bullet the rest of the way out of the barrel. Unbelievable that it could happen but that was the explanation. The actor who played Fun Boy was pretty shook up over it for a long time after the movie was released.

It’s sad that the show he was filming for was called “Close Up”, And he happened to put a gun that he thought had a blank in it, shooting himself in the head accidentally. Almost the same thing happened with the late guitarist Terry Kath from the band Chicago, He didn’t completely empty the barrel because one bullet happened to be left in the chamber, The one bullet that killed him.
Just started watching the series VOYAGERS recently, and had no idea until today that he had died as a result of an accident. He appeared to be quite a talented lead actor and no doubt would of had a long career in the movie industry.
I remembered this on the news. I thought, " oh what a gorgeous guy and what a waste of a bright fufure and what a tragedy." This sent the message to NEVER play with handguns. It's very dangerous!
Cover Up had only been on the air barely a month when Hexum had his accident. After his death, he was quickly replaced with Tony Hamilton, who began appearing in mid-to-late Nov. 1984. The show was only on for one season in total, which was the sole fault of CBS, who cut back on promoting the show heavily in early 1985. This resulted in a ratings drop-off come springtime. It was an overnight hit with Hexum, and held onto the high ratings with Hamilton under normal promotional volume. Damn CBS!
Yes the fallout with Alec Baldwin being charged with involuntary manslaughter made me watch this one from the 1980's and it's crazy how we are repeating history all because the Directors and producers made a bad decision over a gun scene that lead to an on set death.
His death doesn't really make much sense, Jon Erik had used guns with blanks before in his previous TV series 'voyagers' - I'm sure he would have been aware of the risk if he fired one into his head - I think that he didn't think that there was any kind of bullet in the gun (he'd just woken up before he shot himself), I don't think he knowingly shot himself with a blank
Fun Guy - Not really, I just don't buy that he knew the gun had blanks in it, I think Jon Erik thought the gun was completely empty when he put it against his head and it should have been - someone really messed up leaving a dangerous loaded gun lying around on set like that, I'm sure even back in '84 safety regulations didn't allow that kind of thing
I remember this like it was yesterday. I also remember Phil Shuman because I graduated high school with his sister and he actually did a live news bit from our ceremony.
But it definitely was the prop Masters fault he should have had it locked up and only given it to the actors when the scene called for it. The Man that received Jon-Eriks heart was a very bad guy. A pimp in vegas that kept his steerage in line with force. He finally jicked it in 2002 I think. Maybe later. Jon-Erik was a great Man. He was a caring giving Man that quietly helped people. He was bored sitting in bed waiting for the next scene. It never should have been anywhere anyone could have touched it. There's no burial because his ashes were scattered in the Pacific ocean. There is a memorial at a cemetery in la. Scott Michael from "Dearly Departed" on youtube has a great time line of events, update and video on Jon-Eric final days. *🙏🏻Rest In Peace🕊* Jon-Erik You may be gone but you will never be Forgotten

I forgot how handsome he was.
00:32 The reporter said close up instead of cover up.
And wow he was gorgeous!!
Thank you.
Just started watching the series VOYAGERS recently, and had no idea until today that he had died as a result of an accident. He appeared to be quite a talented lead actor and no doubt would of had a long career in the movie industry.
I'm only discovering this 36 years later. I use to be a fan of voyager as a child. Wow very sad even though this was many years ago
'Remember this like it was yesterday. It was very sad. 'Felt sorry for his family and fiance.
George Clooney and his dad look pretty similar.
charismatic actor... rest in peace
Crazy my friend was his great nephew and looks just like him
Wow, interesting. I hope he does as well as his great Uncle.
Can I have his number? Lol
37 years later some thing has also happened very much the same
I remembered this on the news. I thought, " oh what a gorgeous guy and what a waste of a bright fufure and what a tragedy."
This sent the message to NEVER play with handguns. It's very dangerous!
No question, this guy had the makings to really go far...too bad, sad story...
He used to be one of the on-air hosts on AMC, when they just played old movies, that's what I remember him from and yeah, he is George's dad!
Damn CBS!
Awful to think of how he died. At least we can always see him through pictures and videos.
I heard about him for the first time on a show that was talking about what happened on the set of "Rust"
Do you suspect a "cover up"?
Fun Guy - Not really, I just don't buy that he knew the gun had blanks in it, I think Jon Erik thought the gun was completely empty when he put it against his head and it should have been - someone really messed up leaving a dangerous loaded gun lying around on set like that, I'm sure even back in '84 safety regulations didn't allow that kind of thing
I will never understand why they left that weapon and bullets, whether empty or blanks, with him on the set.
I believe there is more to the story and that's just my opinion
The production of that series was so negligent that the possibility of it being a conspiracy of some kind seems very possible.
0:32 - Did this fool really say 'Close-Up'? It's *COVER-UP* ! 🤦🏾♂️
It hurts my heart on his untimely death .but the silverling on it he donating some of his parts to saves the lives of other people
My god George Clooney looks like his dad!
I remember this like it was yesterday. I also remember Phil Shuman because I graduated high school with his sister and he actually did a live news bit from our ceremony.
Voyagers was awesome! RIP young man!
Indeed. I just saw it and looked for a comment about it and here was yours :D
So sad :(
But it definitely was the prop Masters fault he should have had it locked up and only given it to the actors when the scene called for it.
*🙏🏻Rest In Peace🕊*
Jon-Erik
You may be gone
but you will never be
Forgotten
Suicide or murder? "Let's see if I get myself with this one" is an odd thing to say.
He was very talented not just looks. He was the whole package
0:33 Ah yeh stupid fool, Phil, you called the show "Close Up".
1:24 the poster at the gate was for Johnny Dangerously, starring Michael Keaton and Joe Piscopo. It would be released two months later.
