The italians don't go halfway with honoring their deceased. These are some of the most intricate graves I've ever seen. Thank you much for visiting these places for those of us who can't. I would love to see some of these places but not sure if I'll ever have the funds to make it over seas.

Just think about it! Every parent who loses a child fears that the child will be forgotten. You will likely never forget the monument with the baby popping out of the headstone. The parents made sure of that! It was a brilliant way of insuring the child would live on in the minds of so many.

I always think of it as visiting the lonely. Whenever I go to a cemetery I focus on the peacefulness of it, the connection I feel to those who came before us and helped give us all the things we cherish today, and how no matter how hard/easy their lives were, at least now they are resting together. I like to visit so that they are not forgotten and I tell myself that I am a guest coming over to take away some of their tedium. The truly sad ones are the neglected ones in run down and possibly singular settings.

I've seen a number of those porcelain picture medallions on grave stones, they still make those but the modern ones are applied with adhesive which will fail and can be pried off, the old ones Ive seen were actually embedded into a recess cut into the stone, so they dont fall off, and are basically pry-proof.
The ones Ive seen were in B&W and I think were between the 1870s and 1920s, and they really give you a look at the person as they once appeared!

I think the baby as braking out of the grave and going up to heaven.
I think that's what it's meant to represent.
There's a grave of a little maybe 10 yr old boy -- how they made it I don't know. You see the wheel chair and a little boy looks so happy as he's leaving his chair while reaching up with his arms to the sky.
It's meant to show that he's free -- free of pains & sickness and like he's being brought to heaven where he can run & play --and be very loved. He was finally not in pain anymore
People leave toys as gifts. That child's parent's loved their sick child very much & set up a fund & foundation that would help parents pay for their sick children.
So when I saw the little baby reaching upwards out of his or her tomb maybe it's supposed to show the same as the boy in the wheelchair.
It's just another sick child who suffered & died body wise but the child's soul was now free and Jesus would gently hold that child and love and make that child we'll again..
Anyway, that's my take on it

It was a lot cheaper back then, nowadays those bronze portraits, busts and medallions would cost 5-6 figures each, there is a LOT of labor and a lot of steps involved in making each one!
I had a couple of my older standing dog models cast in bronze recently, they are about 6" tall and they cost me over $500 each JUST for the foundry simply casting my wax into bronze, I did all the rest of the work. Take that $500 for a 6" tall sculpture and then look at some of those ful bodied standing figures in the video and figure out what is involved in making those and the cost!

@@DeuDeoEgo Yes, I would say this graveyard was for the wealthy. They say "You can't take it with you", but some people can .obviously spend a lot of "it" on a grand tombstone.

Many more recent burial sites seem to focus on the material, however, this cemetery definitely has the focus of a lasting memorial in stone by master sculptors. I’ve never seen works like this. Wow!

The ones with the men feeding the birds are probably meant to be Saint Francis of Assisi. He was said to be able to communicate with animals.

Guessing the sheep was symbolic of Jesus's flock. Loved your comment on a guy doing a back flip that made me laugh out loud. Sorry to hear you felt so sad., life is so fragile. x

Wow. This must surely be where all the nobles/elite are buried. This is not really surprising as I saw a couple of famous surnames. Such nice graves. You can sense the sadness the loved ones had for their deceased family. I really love all the statues.

Saddest grave I ever saw was in a little cemetery off the interstate in New Mexico. This woman was buried next to all her kids. She'd literally outlived all of them. If you know that part of the country, it's likely drugs and the lifestyle that goes with it was what claimed them.

Unbelievable. The amount of artwork in that cemetery is mindblowing. I cannot help but ask how much did some of those pieces cost. Thanks for the brief glimpse.

The sculptures are absolutely amazing. I noticed one couple died about a week apart. And so many children. Thank you for sharing. I have always found cemeteries fascinating. I would love to know each of their stories.

I don’t think the baby sculpture was meant to be terrifying.
There’s a scripture in the Bible about the grave releasing the physically dead.
The baby was raising up to Heaven from that earthly tomb, it’s arms outstretched, reaching up to Heaven, to Jesus and all the beauty.
