I never missed an episode either! It was one of the few non-police shows I enjoyed as a kid! So wish it had been longer than two seasons! The full year it aired (mid-Fall 1982 - Summer 1983) spanned fifth grade for me! The first season ended right after I had turned 11 (January '83)
I would love to see this show revived with new actors, and with greater emphasis on battles between the Voyagers and the rebel time-lord. I assume that he’s the one going through time mucking up things that the Voyagers have to fix.
Voyagers! Great series. You should do an episode on Cover Up which was the series which allegedly Jon Erik Huxem shot himself with blank which was suppose to been a prank. That series should of been the series that could of been big but due to Hexum's death, the show went stale when Antony Hamilton taken over. Not Hamilton's fault but You feel it was made for Hexum.
In my head cannon, Phineas Bogg is Jeffrey Jones all grown up, and him taking his younger self on adventures is him training himself into becoming a Voyager
Interesting but not quite. Bogg himself mentioned he was originally from the 17th century - he mentioned he knew many pirates and served on a vessel (and how he got the regular clothes he wore).
I watched this when it first aired. I loved this show so much I own an all brass replica of the Omni and the complete series on DVD. Hexum was awesome and Meeno was really good. It's a shame we never got more but I'm glad we got it at all.
@@Fast_Eddy_Magic There was guy on the Replica Prop Forum that made them in cast brass. it was tad bigger and heavier than the original, but he said for years he wanted to redesign and build it agin with newer techniques to make it smaller and more accurate and lighter. I don't know if he ever did though. Good prop maker though. I have an all metal book replica from that guy from the movie Enemy Mine.
Jon-Erik Hexum did have a tragic end dying from a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head after playing Russian roulette with a revolver loaded with a blank. His mother gave her permission to use his organs for transplants and a number of people benefitted from this.
Excellent as ever. Any chance of covering the ultimate time travel movie, 'Biggles, Adventures in Time'? ruclips.net/video/Q8Gt-UqwZaI/видео.html. Would love to see the ultimate 80s time travel movie get the Stam Fine treatment.
I actually enjoyed Voyagers. The chemistry between Hexum and Peluce was classic - not exactly father/son, but they definitely respected the other. The stories are imaginative and don't fall back on too many clichés. Hexum was actually a very good actor and fits in well here. Shame we lost him so soon. I do think they didn't take advantage of its potential, although it tried to expand its setup near the end of the series, which went nowhere since they canceled the show after one year. Voyagers could have been an American Doctor Who, in which the characters travel in time, fix what went wrong, and face off other kinds of temporal threats. After all, Doctor Who began as an educational kids show with a science fiction twist. There's no reason why Voyagers couldn't have gone on from there. Near the end, they created a character like Doctor Who's The Master, who worked towards defeating Bogg and Jeffery at every step -- and we are left with some historical characters who become aware of Bogg's purpose. That might have led to some interesting stories down the line. But this was a Scholastic production, and they probably didn't want to go too far away from the show's educational purpose. In short, Voyagers wasn't about to introduce pepperpot monsters screaming "EXTERMINATE!" to get more people to tune in. And in the end, it was defeated by, perhaps ironically, 60 Minutes.
Seeing the other comments, I wasn’t the only kid that loved this show when it came out.. I thought the Omni was the coolest looking gadget on TV. Was disappointed when it stopped airing. The kid was relatable and Phineas sort of dressed like Han Solo. (Whoever invented steampunk must’ve been a Voyagers fan)
Loved this show as a kid, found it on dvd, thought it would not hold up, it did. Great show for all ages, great acting, great chemistry between the two leads, if you can find it on dvd, grab it, RIP Jon-Eric Hexum
You should've mention the impact of the movie Time Bandits (and maybe Raider of the Lost Ark too) which certainly was the pitch to the studio. I was the kind of kid that grew up reading the Encyclopedia and atlas's at home so I was the target audience for the show which really was a Saturday morning show that made it to the evening schedule. You should do a review of the short lived Q.E.D.
I loved this show as a kid, watching it when it first aired. I would have loved for there to have been a second season delving deeper into the Voyager lore. Jon-Erik Hexum was one of my first adolescent crushes and I was completely devastated to hear about his passing. He was incredibly handsome, and by all accounts, an extremely nice person as well. It's too bad that he didn't get to have the long career that he was on track to have.
I had a good friend who was Jon-Erik's girl friend, and she sang nothing but praise about him being humble and super nice, and she never got over his death. It still brings her to tears.
It was truly a shame because he had tons of talent and promise! He had actually been in the process of working on a new show called Cover Up in which his accidental death from Russian Roulette cost them a full season of episodes and it actually wasn't half bad either (the episodes which did air from 1984 into 1985)! I loved Voyagers and also wish it had gone on longer! The producers had planned on a second year but interference from competing shows reversed the decision! The show spanned my year in fifth grade and didn't miss an episode
If they had a series finally it should have been saving the kid’s parents but at the cost of the kid forever forgetting about Bogg, leading to some really tough choices.
Time Tunnel (1966-67) was and is so loved by me that most other time travel themed TV shows (like Voyagers) come over as second best. On top of that, in the early 80s I was too busy watching that snot nosed witch Joan Collins in Dynasty (1981-89).
Shows like this, took me outnofba miserable childhood, if onlynforn30 minutes to an hour. Was so sad this one never came back. Few cool shows that you could identify with as a child in primetime.
I had completely forgotten that this show existed, and yet being reminded of it brought back how much I enjoyed it back in the day. I know it wasn't the best of shows, but it was fun.
I watched it when I was in elementary school, Pacific Grove, California. We didn't have cable, but back in early 80s California there were so many different stations and choices. We even got Telemundo on a UHF channel.
Never watched the show as a little kid maybe for the reason it had a little kid in it and that seemed just dumb to me. I mean, who wants to see themselves in escapist entertainment! Absurd! Sad about Hexum. I knew of the story when it happened but didn't know the actor. Prop guns with blanks aren't the same as a toy cap gun. RIP.
Saw every episode and was heartbroken when it was cancelled. That's the one thing you didn't really discuss. Probably better that way; would be like putting lemon juice into a cut. Anyway, great vid.
Yes, I noticed that as well. Annie Oakley was Willie's girlfriend on V. Robert Maxwell, the anthropologist was Harry Houdini. The lovely blonde Voyager in the courtroom, was the fifth columnist, Barbara. Faye Grant was in the pilot of Voyagers., The actor that played Lawrence of Arabia was also on V the series. And also some of the actors from V and Voyagers were also on Tales of the Gold Monkey.
I'm late to the party, but I really enjoyed your Voyagers! Vlog. It was also shared a while back on my FB Group. It's honest and funny. The chemistry of the leads truly carried this show (I love the Starsky and Hutch reference!) The show had high ambitions, but a lot of network interference, among other things, got in the way too, slashing the budget as well and taking away that breakneck pace of traveling through history. The stories also had to be altered because Voyagers! was pummeled over the so-called "violent content." I can't even get started on that one. Thanks for bringing more attention to the show, I've been involved in the fandom for nearly 20 years, and it's great to see its popularity grow since the DVDs were released in 2009. Eventually, I will get my blog back up online, but my main website is still up.
It was never picked up again after the incident. Nor was the boy ever mentioned again either. 2 careers shot dead over a gag. Never been anything like it. Sort of like the man from atlantis series. You tuned in to watch it, and it just wasn't there. Like the back half of series 8 of 2 1/2 men.
Thank you. I had no idea about this show. My favorite time travel show was Sliders. How would you compare these two shows? also, I never saw Quantum Leap so how would you compare these three shows?
And people complained how "Sliders is just like Quantum Leap". All 3 have a very glib base idea, each show gives it plenty of originality. Or 4 if you include hoe "Voyagers is Doctor Who".
When this show was out every elementary school had kids running around with home made Omnis out of cardboard. I enjoyed history so this show worked for me.
The kid was like Wesley Crusher and the format is a cheaper version of Doctor Who but only set on Earth (and without fsrting monsters), but I loved this show as a kid. Nice to see you covering this show, now I want to see if there's a blu-ray! Thanks!
What if they got stuck somewhere in a very boring place, at a very boring time, with ordinary people and not much happening? No, it'd be too much like real life. This reminds me of how EVERYONE who believes in reincarnation believes they were reincarnated from some world-famous historic figure.
I couldn't wait for this show each week. It was like Square Pegs, can't miss TV before that was a thing. Of course the block heads at NBC killed it, and indirectly they killed Bog in real life too - and you don't need an Omni to see that, then they killed Square Pegs too! What came after was two years of dearth on TV, unless you were a Knight Rider fan (meh, it was ok). I just rewatched the whole show a few months ago, and I liked it better as a kid than a grown up, but only because I now know where they were really playing loose with the history. However, I may have never known the truth about history if it weren't for shows like Voyager to get me to read those books and watch those documentaries.
FYI, Cover Up completed its only season by killing off Hexum's character off screen and replacing him with a similar character to maintain the show's premise. Of note, Richard Anderson pretty much plays Oscar Goldman with a different name.
I also loved this show and it was my favorite when it aired. It seemed very real as well because I was the same age as the main character Jeffery Jones / Meeno Peluce. It also seemed so real because my great-grandfather also met and was greatly influenced by Samuel Gompers on one of his visits to St. Louis. I also grew up surrounded by my family's history, photographs and history. I could not wait each week till Sunday for the next episode! And I often took a trip just down the street my local library because "Its all in books!"
Big fan of time traveling books movies shows, Dr who, Quantum leap are a couple favorites, but any new concept works with me. i had to watch it in rerun a little later, became a fan, might have to get this on DVD finally. i liked the unique way they traveled, a little of Dr who meets , Quantum leap, meets, BTTF. To be honest i like the time travel vessel better than the being physically transported. but it works if done really well. Quantum Leap did it the best.
Have no memory of this show, but I would have loved it as a teen. Have to track it down. and no need to be dissing the Happy Days time travel cartoon. That show was bizarre and brilliant.
Excellent. Another TV Show I have never heard about before. These old classics may be loved by many, but they look terrible to an outsider. This is a double treat! Stam's fine Comedy and an hilariously bad TV Show. Perfect for Fridays.
My mother enjoyed this -- to a little consternation from my father, a professor of history -- and it was my way of being contrarian, of saying I'd had enough of 60 Minutes.
I remembering loving this action packed series back when I was a kid. Was there even a season two planned? I know I was bummed when this series was over.
I grew up during the 1980s and I didn’t even know this show existed, it sounds like a lot of fun. :) Also the story about the tragic death of Hexum genuinely breaks my heart, he seemed like a good guy.
You make this show sound better than I remember it being, but then again, this was during a time when I was actively cutting back on TV, so I probably didn't actually watch more than a few episodes at the time. Frankly, I generally dislike time travel shows that take you into the historical past. It seems like a cheap way to come up with a plot idea, and yes, it does sometimes feel like they're trying to teach you about history. Instead, I want time travel stories to be their own thing, even if they go into the past, although it's more fun if it's in the future. The City on the Edge of Forever takes Kirk, Spock and McCoy into Depression-era America, but not to any specific historical event. Edith Keeler and what she did are all fictional. I liked the Time Tunnel, but it wasn't ALL about significant historical events. I thought it was a shame they only had two or three episodes where they went into the future instead of the past. As for The Menagerie, it wasn't a show with clips from previously shown episodes, but clips from the pilot that had never been aired before, and thus, brand new for the viewers. That puts it into an entirely different kind of clip show. And yeah, it's one of my favorite Star Trek episodes.
I watched every episode of this show as a child. I had dreams and even a few nightmares as a child about this show. Which means I loved it.
It also aired in Korea. I enjoyed it when I was young.

I loved this TV SHOW
Me too! This was a great show as a kid. Wonder if it holds up
one of my favorite show as akid and I had the biggest crush on Jon-Erik... his deep voice and blue eyes

I would love to see this show revived with new actors, and with greater emphasis on battles between the Voyagers and the rebel time-lord. I assume that he’s the one going through time mucking up things that the Voyagers have to fix.

I used to love this show. What a shame Jon-Erik Hexum died the way he did.
06:59 Dick van Dyke we forgive you.
Charles Lindbergh - we can help with his flight or save his baby......Chocks away !

he was playing a sight gag not Russian roulette
You guys make Friday mornings so great with those reviews. Thanks ❤
I remembered rushing home after school just to watch this series. That was in 1984. Hexum was terrific.
I have to admit that I learned more about history from this show than I ever did in school.
That one actor's "British" accent sounded VERY Minnesotan to me. Whatever, as long as it's exotic.
This show made no sense at all. But I loved it... and still do.
Jon-Erik's death was so sad 😔😟🙁
It feels like The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles owes a lot to this show's premise.

Bloody hell what part of Bogata did that British soldier come from?

The judge plays the original hulk in the Incredible Hulk TV show!
I can't help wondering if this had been picked up for a second season, Jon Erik would've still lived.
That English soldiers accent is something else!!!
voyagers and quantum leap are 2 great shows
If every family had two TVs rest assured no little child would have watched 60 Minutes over Voyagers!!! No Way!!!!!! Lol!!!!🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, children had zero interest in “60 Minutes”! We ALL watched “Voyagers” and talked about it in school the next day.
Fuck me, was that Jonathan Frakes as Lindenberg. I thought Startrek TNG was his first gig given his impersonation of Pinocchio
This series has been introduced into China in the 1990s. I watched it passionately.

I like this show to bad it didn't stay long
Donald P Bellisario has a lot to answer to…
And people complained how "Sliders is just like Quantum Leap". All 3 have a very glib base idea, each show gives it plenty of originality. Or 4 if you include hoe "Voyagers is Doctor Who".
For what reason
This show was what Doctor Who was supposed to be. But for Daleks.
10:34 Jonathan Frakes!
The Omni would definitely be showing Red in this clown world timeline.😆
8:06 11:38...They just fall? Through roofs and shit?
Never heard of this one.
Used to love the sixties show Time Tunnel as a kid in the seventies. This looks to be v similar
It was a real hoot, worth seeking out if you like the genre.
@@TheRadioAteMyTV Quantum Leap was a slightly more recent favourite too. Used to love watching Sam and Al’s adventures 😊👍
I can only imagine all the things they could have done with the evil voyager had the show lasted longer. 🙁
Another example of a network that trashed a legacy for a quick jab at "the other guys." Sorry this did not go into first-run syndication.
I've heard of this show but never saw it 🙁
Not even sure it was broadcast in the UK in the 80s!
reboot this show, but your destination is not your choice
All the british accents sound vaguely Irish
When this show was out every elementary school had kids running around with home made Omnis out of cardboard. I enjoyed history so this show worked for me.
Where can I find a good quality of this show ?
Menno actually is a history teacher in LA.
I do not remember this in 1982… must have been so bad, I tuned out.
My favorite show as a child

I loved this show as a kid.
Lance Gault- You can never have too much Lance!! haha...
You could never have too much of him but you got his name wrong.
no Voyagers just Sliders
This show was tight!
Ouch, I heard about that incident involving an actor being killed by a prop gun. I didn't know the name of the actor.
I completely forgot about this time traveling gem

Also the story about the tragic death of Hexum genuinely breaks my heart, he seemed like a good guy.
My favorite example of a clip show done well is when DS9 used TOS footage for the tribble episode. That's how you recycle footage in a good way.
Voyagers got me to enjoy history infact, I was a history major in college
Not sure but around the 1m20 point as they are talking about Pearl Harbor it sounds like jets going over, in 1941 😃lol
