As a current D1 player myself, I'd like to clear some things up from my own experience for this old video. Not everyone "pays to play soccer" like the comments suggest. Some of us actually get to go to top level colleges and get degrees while playing the game we love thanks to soccer due to scholarship. And not to mention the chance to get picked up by a pro team. For those who do not get scholarships, financial aid and grants are widely available if your household income is low enough. Look up FAFSA if finances are an issue for college. As far as "poor American style soccer" I'd like to point out that this video features a college team on the East Coast. East Coast is notorious for recruiting the biggest guys possible and playing an eyesore style of soccer which is relying on long balls and set pieces for goals. Here in the West Coast, we like to play much more technical with the ball on the ground influenced by European soccer. Historically when our styles of play meet, West Coast tends to dominate the game in possession and chances created, but games can be thrown very easily by giving up corner kicks and set pieces. East Coast style is ugly, but they defend well and find a way to win. I'd say the two sides are about equal in wins against each other. Keep in mind that every team is different and you don't really know college soccer just by watching this video. "They think they're so good and cool". Aside from going pro or national team, this is the highest level of soccer available in America. Of course there's a level of pride that comes with making it into college soccer. We realize that we are definitely not the best in the world and that European soccer generally is better, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't wear our college jersey with our heads high the same way and club team or even Sunday league team does. "American college soccer players suck" is true to an extent if you want to compare then to professionals. Many players are in their programs due to relationships with the coaches, they were great players when they were younger but never improved, or just fit a certain criteria that a coach is looking for when recruiting. However, its not correct to say that all the players are bad. An extremely small amount of players make it to college soccer vs how many people play in their youth and so that says something no matter the reason why you got recruited. Many players in the college scene are very talented and could go pro given the opportunity. The injury rate in college soccer is very high and many careers of great players come to an early end and great talent can be wasted in a single moment on the field. My team went from a vicious starting 11 to only having 4 of the original starters thanks to injuries last year. You also have to remember that we are student-athletes. In Europe all you do is play soccer if you are a soccer player. That's it. In college you have to go to multiple classes a day and do well in those classes so you don't fall below the minimum GPA requirement and get cut from the team, before you even get out to training. It can be draining for those who aren't mentally tough and can negatively impact your game even if you are a great player. Its a whole different lifestyle then professional/European soccer and many great footballers can't balance school along with soccer. The temptation of the amazing party scene is a whole extra demon if not enjoyed in moderation. If anyone has any questions about D1 soccer I'd be glad to answer.
I've been playing in the US, and played in Germany for a long time and will be playing in college next fall. Having seen players on both sides of the pond, D1 soccer players are great players on par with anyone I payed against in Europe. Anyone who is bashing college soccer doesn't understand the importance of college sports in American culture; in any sport here in America, instead of academies, there are youth clubs and school teams up until age 18, and then 5% of those players move on to college soccer, and a lucky few of those play pro. Although there are some academies starting up in the European mold through the USSDA Demosphere, most players, like all American athletes, still play in college, as it is culturally significant in the US to attain a degree, and for college to be a chapter in your life.
How far were you travelling to play against teams in Germany (to know around which kinda level you were playing at) Because I had a friend who got a scholarship in the states and played college soccer and told me not to go there as the level wasn’t as high and he was winning all his games like 14-0
9:30 isn't too bad, but it's still an early class for college. College classes are often spread throughout the day, so it's not like the 7am-3pm or whatever for gradeschool and high school. Some days you don't even start class until the afternoon. Which is why having to go to a 9am class can seem early.
11 years on and i still refer to this video as the viseo that started my dream to get paid to coach soccer. Alot of hurdles infront of me but I'll get it
How are they bad if they made the National Championship that year. If you think they are bad get some prove. I don't know this team, but if you took your time to watch a team it does not take one match for you to notice how they play. People can have bad nights and some people have good nights. ~College Cup 2011~
I went on trials with NSR australia after receiving an e-mail from them. If they like how you play and your grades at school are good they advertise you as a player and student for U.S colleges to pick you... They have a 100% recruitment rate but its not cheap either. And obviously you have to take the SAT. But I should be getting an offer soon and flying to America next year, its great
Soccer is really a tough sport. You don't really see the body fighting in the television. Soccer is really full contact. They push you and elbow you. Also, if you don't dodge a slide tackle fast you are going to break something.
I let go of a chance to play college soccer. I regret it every dam day. It was my dream and I let go of it because of money. Just to come and find out that I would of gotten quite a lot in scholarships 😢😭😭
I wasn't the best but i was pretty good. I played A league for 2 years, B league for 1, and Travel for 1 (if your from america you would know what that is.). i played midfield and striker. I mainly concentrated on footwork because i hated people who just ran with the ball cause of their speed. I know what im talking about haha. And yes, i agree you do need a lot of endurance and balance, and i'm aware you don't need as much endurance in football as u do soccer.
To those that are comparing college soccer to professional in Europe is simply unfair. These players are amateurs, with very few of them with a shot to go pro, and if they do go pro it will most likely be in the MLS. With that being said both the teams playing in this video are top 25 programs in the USA. In fact Charlotte (Green Team) made it to the Championship this year. If you have ever watched a college soccer game in America you will realize that it is much more direct, and much less possession oriented. It is also very physical. It isn't as beautiful as it is overseas but is much more action packed in my opinion. Also college sports in America are very popular. Much more emphasis on college sports than academies and what not in Europe. Plus soccer is the 4th most popular sport in America. With all this being said Division 1 soccer is the highest level of soccer in America, outside of the MLS.
actually soccer is more popular in the states than MLB, and the NHL. But it is not the MLS most americans are intersted in; there are so many leauges that are popular such as most top flight European leauges, and the Mexican leauge
I used to play soccer, now i play football. I respect both sports, but what i can see soccer players are a lot less tougher. Not to mean anything.. Soccer is a speed sport. Football is speed/strength.
I have no idea why but this just seems off. Like the ball's weight or something is wrong. It doesn't behave in the way it should. Any European here to back me up?
I could make that team if I just got into damn shape. I'm a great player when I have the ball around my feet but I just need to have the motivation to train again
no, it's the biggest sport in the world because it is cheap and easy to set up teams especially in developing countries, and the rules aren't that complicated.
yes of course but my point is another one. If there was the opportunity to study and play football at a good level. If you wan't to play for a european Youth team good isn't enough... and then, once you are in the Youth squad no one guareantees you to turn pro. You don't play football and study in europe... you have to choose one! And then obviously a decent baseball player in the us would be considered good in europe and the same with football in the usa
komal thompson Its not playing soccer in college vs getting a degree in college. Its both. You won't be a janitor with a degree just because you played soccer...
If you knew much about sport you would know that rugby tackles are a lot more safer than American football. Rugby tackles are below theshoulder and there is a proper technique which is both efficient and safe. However, in American football, tackles are much more powerful and harder. Even with the padding, players still come out of tackles with serious injuries. Also, 'Real Men' play every sport, you shouldn't discriminate less contact sports because they still require a high level of skill.
Then you have never played soccer. Watch some high quality english premiere league matches and you will see what the job of the full back is. That is primarily a tackling position, and some of the contact here is harder than the average football hit.
So you pay NSR Australia for them to contact US colleges promoting you? How much does this cost? When you do get an offer is it likely to be a "top" soccer college or one of the not so good ones? I assume you get a full scholarship with everything paid for (food, accomodation, etc.)? Also where do you trial with NSR and what level do you have to be at? I have played at Nationals football many times with the ACT but never made the Australia squad...
I have been selected by University of Texas at Arlington for this fall. I want to continue my soccer after I come there in USA. What should I do to go on with soccer. I want to play from first Division Club. What should I do. I need help. Thank You.
Hi i'm 19 and italian. I wish to know more about the "level" of football in collage if you get what i mean. Like i've watched quite a few videos, i know is stupid to tell just from a screen and that i should be there to judge but i would compare the level expressed as the one in amateur League here in italy . So my question is a european kid with a good football background would easily compete in these leagues? I Personally think so because any u19 squad of a pro team would destroy team 20-0....
Ok more power to you but the reason I said that is because a lot of the kids that play college football are aiming to play pro (MLS) and alot of them to dont have the mental understanding of the game.
Guys ive heard to be a soccer player u have to be in a team to get your chances higher and record your gameplay but thats my problem i cant get in a team my dad cant drive me there cuz hes at work and we only have one car and all the locations for soccer tryouts are pretty far even if i do make it which i will dw i might not be able to go to the locations for games.Plz help me how do i become soccer player without going in a team
We need to have the strength and power of a football player, the stamina of a marathon runner, and the concentration of a brain surgeon. But we need to put all this together while moving at high speeds on a cold and slippery surface while 5 other guys use clubs to try and kill us. Oh yeah did I mention that this whole time we’re standing on blades 1/8 of an inch thick?
Does these players get picked in the superdraft mls or do they go through this program"SOCCER SCHOLARSHIP" And dont make it pro cause these players are Div I am thinking of going to this but most people go and never become pro

If anyone has any questions about D1 soccer I'd be glad to answer.
ConArtistics is it really hard to get in it?
South American college teams would kick your asses. #TrueStory (Specially teams from Argentina, Brazil and Chile)
+ConArtistics Can you play if you are in a postgraduate program? (22-25 years old)
+Bill Houdini I'm actually not sure, but I've never heard of someone playing in a postgraduate program. So I doubt it.
+Ignacio Murillo
Varies depending on the college
I liked the hair cut.
I've been playing in the US, and played in Germany for a long time and will be playing in college next fall. Jeremy Gunn is now the head coach of Stanford's men's soccer team
Looks easy up here. Much harder once you are in there.
Nope. It's not.
yobewo id like to see you put in a possession drill with these guys lol
Got a few mates who have just gone over to USA to play college football after just been release by pro clubs. Been over about 4month
"Real high on nutrition" as they eat bread, bagels, crisps and sugar bars
That's how we get ready for game day
+Dan Prusa Well you should be trying to change that man
+Dan Prusa Do a bit of research on nutrition. It'll make a difference
Ever heard of Carb loading?
+MD Supreme Yes. But usually on nutritious food.

I'm playing in U19 at a regional level in france and i wanted to know if you guys think i can join a ncaa team next year, thxs
It means you don't get better because you leave college after you are young
Yes you can play, check out exact recruiting or captainu.com
i don't know how to join a college next year for fall 2016
+Lucas Gaulmin make a highlight video and send it to ncaa coaches here.
Lucas Gaulmin tbh I think you are better off in France rather than the US.
9:30 - early classes? Are you for real?
Sara Rozic lol
Sara Rozic I'm in middle school and I start at 7

I will do anything to achieve my goal! I have to get into D1 college! I have to get into and be selected in the draft!
thanks for the website btw
did u get selected in the draft?
Only in college is 9:28 considered "early" I get a kick out of that. To go back to those days, haha
It's the most entertaining to watch and play
I agree with you 100% its called football for a reason. By the way i live in the States and its painful calling it soccer.
That's my dream team in collage
Charlotte's 3rd goal was nice.
Jeremy Gunn, what a fantastic coach.

I'm not good enough to become a pro, so yeah. College sports is much bigger in the US, which would just make the experience bigger.
fuuaaa living the life...wish i was old enough to be able to play

God, how much I would love to go to USA and play college soccer!

Soccer is the most popular game in the world.

Was the game footage from a different game? The footage in the beginning showed them in white jerseys and at half time they were in green jerseys
Audrey Warren that was their Warm-Up jerseys
Great Video!!
At 0:15 the ball got stuck under his foot😂
Briana Padilla no he meant to do it
do u need to get scouted or just try out for the team??
Are u dumb
+Dan Prusa dude chill he's asking a serious question
+Felix Rosario love the profile pic. MM...Food
There's walk-ons and scouting, so pretty much either
He’s not dumb at all... Even the nation’s highest ranking football teams have walk on players.
every boys dream
Did any of these players get picked up by a pro team?
Yea
John who? And where
Riley Freeman #JP Clint Dempsey played in college.
I used to play soccer, now i play football. I respect both sports, but what i can see soccer players are a lot less tougher. Not to mean anything.. Soccer is a speed sport. Football is speed/strength.
Go for the soccer and stay for the education.
I have no idea why but this just seems off. Like the ball's weight or something is wrong. It doesn't behave in the way it should. Any European here to back me up?
Yeah I know what your talking about it seems very odd.
America needs some Mitre Ultimatch's sending over!
I could make that team if I just got into damn shape. I'm a great player when I have the ball around my feet but I just need to have the motivation to train again
nope
Train again
no, it's the biggest sport in the world because it is cheap and easy to set up teams especially in developing countries, and the rules aren't that complicated.
thank you i play premiere soccer has well
Why would a college in North Carolina have 49ers as their mascot. That just doesn't make any sense
yes of course but my point is another one.
Awesome!!!!
komal thompson Its not playing soccer in college vs getting a degree in college. Its both. You won't be a janitor with a degree just because you played soccer...

Then you have never played soccer. Watch some high quality english premiere league matches and you will see what the job of the full back is. That is primarily a tackling position, and some of the contact here is harder than the average football hit.
Some of the worst commentary I've ever heard

agreed

How come the assessment isn't in USA only in England?
Thats my home town!!!! Yeah :)
I WANT THAT LIFESTYLE
you think I can become pro and use contacts
Ok more power to you but the reason I said that is because a lot of the kids that play college football are aiming to play pro (MLS) and alot of them to dont have the mental understanding of the game.
It warm up jerseys
I think so, but not sure. have you completed Secondary school?
At 9:01 that guy on the goal line, deflecting his teammates shot was offside so the goal shouldnt have counted
Hi I'm from Mexico and I would like to apply, what do I have to do? I didn't understand the asessment part. Thank you!

I´m from Portugal and i play football (soccer). Can i enter this programme? What i have to do?
We need to have the strength and power of a football player, the stamina of a marathon runner, and the concentration of a brain surgeon. But we need to put all this together while moving at high speeds on a cold and slippery surface while 5 other guys use clubs to try and kill us.
Oh yeah did I mention that this whole time we’re standing on blades 1/8 of an inch thick?
has any of these programmes lead to professional contracts?
Is it like this for every D1 soccer team?
how can i get a scholarship to play soccer in america from the uk?
lol people telling they're bad, I'm d3 in college and I have seen some games ending with a score of 10-3, 7-0,etc

Feel so close - Calvin harris
gtfo why did you click this video, soccer is the best and most popular sport in the world

How old are these players?
Why is this I'm my recommendations
Remember! We only wear shin guards. What do hockey players have? Chest pads, Shin pads, helmet, cup, etc.
Hmmmm....
im 19 and i still would love to play for college. when i was a senior in highschool a coach noticed me and he liked me. felt great you know. he asked me what my name was and all that stuff. i didnt end up going because i couldnt afford to go to college. is it still to late for me to play soccer in college?
No
eduardo arroyo thanks for the feedback man
you can go to a community college than transfer to a good school. that's the best way to do it
