I used to commute daily over this bridge. The video doesn’t really convey how massive this bridge is. During rush hour, there are thousands of people on this bridge at any moment, and it’s a miracle that this didn’t happen during peak rush hour.
I've never seen this bridge in real life but I saw a news helicopter vision and when I noticed another helicopter as a spec I realised this is one enormous bridge. Massive in fact !!
Why is miracle?
@@neznam1720this catastrophe happened at around 1:30am, so if it was during rush hour mang more people would have died or been missing.

Those poor, poor people! Sending much love to everyone involved 🥺🙏❤️
The temperature of the sea water would be very close to freezing. No person would last very long in that water.
If they even survive after the collapse. It has a 185 ft. clearance.
Debris fallling on top of them in tons of Steel and cold water could be fatal ?
Psh. I'm way more powerful than some cold water.
If they're alive rescue coast guard and other boaters are there to help!
The water averages at 40 degrees in that area at the moment.
I grew up in Baltimore. This is not some random bridge: The Key bridge is one of the most-travelled bridges in a metropolitan area of over a million people. In addition to the danger to the people who were on it at the time, alternative routes are scarce.
Bummer to read this... 😮
If this closes the Port of Baltimore there will be major commerce, and economic issues also. This is really bad.
They should have invested in safe infrastructure¨
@@user-wg8bn2pc2d Silly comment. The bridge was perfectly safe and has been safe for 45 years. Very few bridges could withstand a direct hit by a loaded 900+ ft cargo ship.

I've been on that bridge dozens of times its a huge bridge and the main bridge of travel across the bay. The water is 48 degrees and it's very dark water in the Chesapeake bay. This is a very serious event I feel so bad for all the people on the bridge how terrifying
I remember the bridge well when working on site at Sparrows Point Steelworks in 1995. We had to cross the river twice each day.
Is there many options for people now without the bridge?
48 degrees? Really ?
It almost looks like the boat was aiming for the bridge, it hit it dead on.
It's not a "boat" it's a ship and it's not a mile long dear.

Awful, that bridge broke up instantly. Those workers didn't stand a chance. I hope there are survivors but that river is huge and fast running. Sending out ♥🇬🇧
I heard the police scanner from the boat rescue they have word it was a construction crew with 20 guys n either two or three trucks plus a large 18 wheeler that was on the bridge

That's 1760 yards
I think she meant the bridge is a little over a mile long.
@@djstuc a mile.............ffs
The Dali is 300 m long
At some point the news reader also says “falling hundreds of feet”… nah, that looks like maybe a little over a hundred feet, not hundreds.
The longest cargo ship in the world is 0.24 mile long , at 2 mins roughly she clearly says the mile long ship !!! What is going here ?
Good to see people commenting, I was questioning myself. A mile long ship has to be an universe record.
She's a moron. That's what's going on. Just because she's a newsreader doesn't mean she's smart. Quite often the opposite! 🤣😂
Probably meant the bridge .
It was just a slip of the tongue when she said ship - eg instead of bridge.
She could have meant the bridge, or she could have made a small mistake and meant the boat because of metric. She mentions that it's 5 hours behind her so this the UK version of Sky News I believe and the boat is around 900ft, so a small slip up could have her thinking 1000 = Next measurement like metres to kilometres.
In the netherlands Rotterdam ,almost every year a ship hit the bridge (willemsbrug)
More than 20 times, and it Never collapse.

I have driven over that bridge a thousand times. As a commercial diver in that area I know first hand the water is about 40F. At 0100 in the morning it will be difficult to impossible to save anyone. Add diesel fuel and twisted metal and the height of the drop it doesn't look good for any recovery. I'm not shocked by much but that was shocking. LOTS of people drive over that bridge each day so DC traffic will be horrendous
Doesn’t it feel like the whole goddamn country is falling apart?
Ship.
It's a SHIP.
And it's not a mile long. 🙄
Sky News at its finest 😂
Look at the elephant in the room, the flashing red warning beacon is missing from the pier the ship collided with, look carefully all the rest have beacons, looks to me the captain in pitch black darkness went for the biggest gap between beacons not thinking a central pier was there.
Or - hear me out - the ship crashing into it could have made the beacon go off.
plausible, but it looks like there was no beacon before contact.@@MoogieSRO
2:14 the ship is 300 meters long, not "about a mile long".
She said we know. Sack her.
The bridge not the ship
She may have confused the bridge span with the ship's length.
If I had a pound ... or even a dollar for every one who couldn't wait to get busy with the digits ......
As for the American National Anthem, Americans should be ashamed. The third verse contains these words,
"No refuge could save the hireling and slave,
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave."
These lines refer to slaves freed by the British who were returned to slavery or murdered often following horrendous torture, castration and worse, following the defeat of the British forces in the Battle of Baltimore. Bearing in mind the persecution of native people and those with black skins by the vile rabble of European renegades, the words "Land of the Free" have a very hollow ring.
What have these reporters been smoking? The ship wasn't over a mile long, jeez.
That's Sky News for ya
Maybe confused the span of the bridge with the length of the ship.
The MarineTraffic24 image appears to show the Dali is at first on a straight, safe trajectory, but then suddenly deviates directly towards the pillar. Strange....just saying.

The general weight of an average-sized cargo ship is somewhere around 165,000 tons, while smaller vessels weigh about 50,000 tons and larger vessels approximately 220,000 tons.

It's Baltimore, a democrat ran city. 😂
It unfortunately is, ships have an insane amount of mass and when they're moving that's a lot of kinetic energy.
Vessels striking bridges has always been an issue since the first large ships and railways, and has been one of the main causes of collapses along with poor maintenance or overloading.
Just Google the Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapse for a very similar disaster with a similar design of bridge, they protected the new bridge from similar collissions with structural dolphins which surround the piers to prevent impact if a ship goes off course.
My goodness where was the Crew of the ship. Who was on watch and where was personal manning the helm
I'm 99 % sure the local harbor pilot was in charge of the ship.

Those ships can be also operated remotely i believe 😢😢
It just departed, usually everyone is on duty, in a harbor just leaving port.
Some reports I've seen suggest the ship may have been having engineering issues and may have lost steerage.

the world is going to hell in a hand basket
After the Sunshine Skyway bridge disaster in the early 1980s- from exactly the same cause- a ship collision- the new bridge was constructed with several bumpers on bothe sides at the shipping channel to prevent this kind of thing from ever happening again.
Definitely not a terrorist attack.
I mean, what terrorist would slam a boat into a bridge? That would be like someone flying a plane into a skyscraper… definitely not
In the middle of the night as well. Where there are less people on the bridge. My guess is either the ship helmsman dozed off due to exhaustion or a steering malfunction.
Prayer for the victims and their families 😢
Ok so they not require a ships pilot, and tug assist? With newer ships having computer controls was there an electric or mechanical failure.
Somebody's insurance is going to take a beating
Wtf it collapsed as if it was made from match sticks
Because a pillar got buckled.
In layman terms: the ship broken one of its legs.
the sections can't free stand, they rely on the entire structure being sound.
The pier was struck, which unsurprisingly caused the structure that was supported by that pier to collapse.
a bridge is built on a minimum of legs and here one of them was hit right out under it, that lead to the obvious collapse of the left and center part.
the right part lacks a counterweight then and with the whole system distributing tensile loads across the structure gone it simply gives way and drops.
My thoughts entirely.
Very poor design in modern times (opened in the 70s).
Hitting one section of a bridge of this sort should not collapse multiple sections, it ought to be built in so that individual sections which are hit do not affect the sections either side of the stricken section!
Its not rocket science.
horrible!
I would be surprised if this was an accident but i sure hope it was. Prayers to all the people involved

i would have expected the bridge to have a sacrificial barrier to prevent direct impact with the bridge, so this is a strange incident.
the new bridge will have it
Very true, after the Sunshine Skyway collapse they added structural dolphins to prevent the piers being struck, I can't imagine why they didn't look at other bridges with the same potential for being struck by ships and add dolphins around those bridges as well.
Money.
I pray very few cars on the bridge at that time, this is catastrophic and heartbreaking for anyone there 😢

That shows the optimization of the original engineering. Every girder was doing its part, within its factor of safety, until the cascading, dynamic, and unplanned loads imposed upon them.
It remains just as… impressive (for lack of my recalling a better word for it, which I am sure exists), despite the analytical eye cast upon it.
This is going to have massive reverberations for the whole area, state, and even nation.

Less than 50 years old and unable to cope with what should be an expected, possible, accident ? So many real questions to ask of the design, the navigation restrictions and general security for such a major structure.
News reporters are lost as to how to report without an autocue. They sound disfunctional.
I agree.
The ship possibly had either a mechanical or electrical malfunction that caused it to steer off course..While still in port, all hands would have been in the bridge, so human error would seem unlikely..imho
Not sure but it looked as if the accommodation lighting went out then there was a lot of black smoke, possibly due to the engines being emergency full astern ...... trouble is it takes a heck of a long time for a big ship to stop even at full power
It could be a wrong air draft calculation. It could be a change in current. It could possibly be many things. But I somehow find the bridge to be a bit week to allow vehicles to go over 😂😂.

I wouldn't be surprised if it happened due to budget cuts...
so many companies try to maximize profits by turning a bridge crew of five into a crew of three, and then just one.
like with cargo trains where one person has to do the job of three for the same pay, leading to accidents.
Was this an intentional ramming of the bridge? We've seen smaller scale attempts to take down bridges with trucks, intentionally.
