Checking Out the New Arri Alexa 35 Grain Textures

This the last time I shoot a video wide open on a lens. I didn't realize I was a little out of focus until editing. Well, my bad.
Anyway, this one is a bit of a quick video. Arri just released a weird video announcing two new grain textures for the Alexa 35. I often use the grain textures in the camera, so these interested me.

Hate to be the fx3 guy, but that film box grain looks no different to the ugly noise found when I shoot ProRes on my Sony.

Gotta be honest, I work in post and I'm so mixed on this feature. That stress of DP shot in one way, but I'm talking to someone else when it gets to me and they want it a different way...just makes me sweat haha. I've got a pretty good arsenal of algorithmic grain adds I can use in post, so I default to saying its easier to add than take it away. If everybody down the line is locked in on that texture though, perfectly fine with it.

RUclips compression definitely making it harder to bee some of the subtler grain strengths 😅
3:33 and 4:14 look like opposite where Filmbox is way stronger than the other time it's shown, any reason for that?

I think the reason the texture grain looked stronger at 4:14 is because since we’re punched in on the sensor in 2k mode, we’re essentially zoomed in on the grain. Filmbox is just applying a grain structure, so it’s the same density on both clips.
Good point about compression. I may create a download link for the files. Especially in Open Gate, the grain is incredibly subtle until you get to super and extreme.

Loved this, what was your experience with crop factors in regards to S16 on the Alexa 35? If I’m correct the Helios covers full frame and the crop factor on s16 is 3X? How does in your opinion the Alexa 35 in s16 hold up to 16mm film 🎞️?

I like the S16 mode on the 35, especially with the new grain textures. I think they add a lot of… well texture. As far as crop goes, I used to have the S16 Canon 8-64 that I would use for everything when I went S16 mode. I try to rent S16 glass if I’m going to use that mode, otherwise it gets too mathy and limiting. The camera being S35 and many lens sets now going FF is a bit of an annoyance tbh.

RUclips compression makes this difficult to actually assess. I gotta upgrade to Sup 1.2.1 and test this out myself

I think I’ll export the back half of this and share a Dropbox link. May take me a moment because I need to finish this next video I’m working on. The compression definitely isn’t helping on here. I will say the interesting this about the new textures is that I do find them to be great for RUclips because the weaker nostalgic textures are a bit too weak to cut through the compression, where as the two new ones aren’t. I’ve always found that if you’re posting to RUclips you have to lay the grain on pretty thick for that reason.
