I was born and raised there. Fished it for twenty years. Live in Nashville now. I know firsthand about the conditions you were fishing in. That's the norm this time of year. Cold front after cold front. But a massive fall bite. Biggest fish in my experience has always been in the center of the river, over long stretches of submerged eel grass using white spinnerbait with small Colorado blades..Early on try all black. Another good bait is a blue flash chrome jerkbait at 6" long. Only other hints, on calm sunny days, drift the grass edges and use the smaller top waters that displace the most water and are noisiest. A brown crawtube can be worked with the current along edges, and brought down any rocky shoal. But Biggest out of grass, middle of the river, in current. Always use the current. Good fishing! Hope you get to fish up there again.
I am so glad you got to fish the susquehanna river, because this is where I'm from. If I knew you were gonna be here I would have tried to find you. I don't get to fish it much anymore because of my age, but I do know that there are many, many smallies in this river, and also great fishery for walleye. I thought you did very well, and I hope you get to return. God Bless You!!
I don’t think you have a full appreciation of your achievement. I’ve fished the Susky for 50 years and while it is a different fishery today than it was even 20 years ago, sometimes the conditions on that river are tough and tougher. Given it was your first time on that part of an expansive river, you done good. Give yourself some credit. You are right that if you went way upriver you’d be more comfortable in that environment. But fishing in the conditions you had would be challenging in a full fledged bass boat so being in a kayak with that wind, you placed very well. 36:11
Excellent adventure and learning experience. We were watching while eating supper the other night and I told my wife that you must love that shoalie more than winning. That was big water and I just couldn't wrap my head around how you were going to paddle it when you could peddle it. Far as I'm concerned I'm figuring you could have won this if you had the use of your hands for fishing instead of paddling. Either way it was some great footage!
Nice to see you fulfill the susky experience and have a blast while doing it! Haha, that current is relentless adding the wind and elements. The length of the action with smallmouth in that river is mind blowing. I fished it as far north as the Poconos all the way below the Susquehanna flats in the bay. Awesome striper fishery too with the fall run. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your 2 day tourney on it John. Kudos, brother and safe travels!
Not a bad showing for a tournament on a bucket list river. I don't think you'll regret the numbers or quality of smallies you caught brother. And your 2 roommates c finished well also. Tremendous blessings John. Fish on
Nice job. I live 1-1:30 away from 90% of the PA stretch of the Susquehanna. Just started Kayak fishing this year. I feel your Pain as I paddled it all season. Glad you enjoyed your time here. Its a special place.
Very proud of all your efforts in this event Brother 🤠. You did great considering first time out here, way better than most of your fans like me if honest would of done 😅. Thanks for continuing to inspire fellas and fellets like me to get out there and try!! God Bless 🙏
Great job! Loved the long recap. The storytelling aspect made the video more interesting. I mostly fish a similar river for smallies just a bit east. You're right. It's all in current (never thought about it that hard, but it's cool to see your observations).
Hi John, I grew up near the Susquehanna River and caught my PB Small mouth there... The best bait is spinner bait, chatter bait or jig with a pumpkin crawl...
Wow, you really worked for this one, John. I proud of you for perservering and not giving up. Maybe you can get back one day and have a more pleasant experience.
Conditions very similar to Potomac River, makes for a tiring day. The wind whistling through the braid makes me feel like I’m right there. Awesome fish, brother!
I was surprised that you chose the shoalie for this trip. Living in the windiest part of the United States here in Oklahoma, I know firsthand the struggles of trying to paddle in the wind. It will beat you physically and mentally. Great job hanging in there and getting in some good fishing. Those smallies were built!!
John, I live very close to where your fishing! if you want to make a trip sometime i would be more than happy to show you a few spots that you can launch and where to catch some monsters. i am down stream alittle closer to Duncannon, but i know a few spots between duncannon and where you are in Millersburg.
Thanks John, I appreciate the videos! I know all about trying to fish in the wind from a paddle boat! I have been trying to figure out if it would be worth getting a trolling motor with spot lock for my Outcast pac 1000 pontoon boat! I'm not sure how to rig up something for a mount on a kayak or for my pontoon boat for that matter. I do know it would make fishing in the wind and current alot easier. I'm down here in Suwannee river county, and to fight the current is a loosing battle, but without someone to drive my vehicle down river I pretty much have to fight rowing up stream and drift back down to where I parked. It can take an hour, and a hard workout just to get 1 mile up the river with the current, but that's what I've been doing....FishOn.....jimi
I know you were worn out from all that padding, but you did great, I do believe the more you do these tournaments the better you will become, nothing ventured nothing gained, was the water too shallow for the foot paddling kayak you have? If you fish Oklahoma tournament, I would Google the water area & get information about it, look up fishing reports, the weather reports, & tournament reports, so you will be more prepared! Thank you John for bringing us this tournament!🎣👍
Awesome job.. Chatter Bait with a swim bait trailer.. Yesterday 48 Amalie’s biggest being 20.5” . Several in the 15” range. I think you finished excellent beings you never fished the area and Susquehanna.
you need the kayak with spot lock gps for this one and a fishfinder althought the spot lock may be more helpful - they both would add tools which would be extremely helpful, you did well for a first timer - it is a lot to take in, the fish were pretty incredible - hopefully you can revisit on your own time with less pressure to explore more - definitely worth it, sort of a unique place
Great video man I love fishing so much man last summer I caught a 3 pound 9 inch largemouth bass in August of last summer you’re the greatest fishing content creator man keep on making great videos man keep on fishin man
Wish PA would have been nicer to you for your first trip up this way, John! But you stuck it out and did great for first time in a new place with brutal weather! Fish are that muscular cause they are always in those currents working out to survive..Glad you learned a lot & have a bigger perspective, and next year you will be a well seasoned veteran "Susky-man" ! :-)
Well John, good effort. Fun to watch. I've been known to catch 60+ smallies in two days but usually only 1-2 lb. fat boys, so fun. Sounds like merch. profits need to be dedicated to motorizing the yaks. GB
That wind was TERRIBLE that day! I was way up north & it poured rain all day up there too. Really tough conditions. You did amazing considering everything!
I hate fishing when its windy more than in any other type of weather. Its harder to detect bites, make accurate casts and stay in your spot. Especially in a kayak or flat bottom boat. I've been looking forward to this video. Great content as always buddy. 👊👍
John, you should have been using a Micro power pole or Bernie's River Stick, that would have made all the difference; Just an FYI, It is almost always windy in the state of PA, especially on our waters. Great job fishing the Susky for the first time and great placement, Great video!
The wound on the head of the fish you caught at the 4:45 mark was a sign that he was digging for crayfish from under rocks. You might have switched to a craw of some sort.
In your last video it looks like Jeff Littles truck was at the house you were staying at. You should talk to him about a Torqeedo deal. That can take your river fishing up a level.
Btw, I recently saw a film about an anchor that was just a carabiner and about 3 lengths of large chain which weighed about a pound for each length that I'm going to try. That wouldn't get snagged up on things like most anchors. Basically a "drag anchor". Will let you know how it works out. They were using that on a Shoalie and with an anchor wizard too.@@CreekFishingAdventures
I do like competing without a lot of stuff on my kayak. But in certain conditions it really makes it a lot harder. But I probably won’t add too much to my kayak unless a company wants me to try it
I really enjoyed your videos. I'm from PA but closer to the other side of the state. That wind looked brutal. If you come back up will you use a motor or aren't they allowed in the tournament? I've grown to love smallies. I've fished primarily for trout my whole life and I'm almost 50 but in the last few years smallies have become my favorite.
Hey John.... I see the title but bet you don't quit. John, I'm curious if all of the kayakers in this tournament are only allowed to use "paddle" yaks? That's really a beautiful river. Ah, just heard what you said about wind and paddling so I'm assuming they are not limited to paddle. Seems to me you're doing pretty well with that handicap. It certainly is a handicap. I think 36th using a paddle only out of 143 is pretty good. John, I'm always pulling for you but just an FYI, the vid is interesting regardless of where you place. It's fun listening to how you're thinking and working on it. And of course the sccenery and fish. Thank you Sir. Really glad you did this. Was very enjoyable. Sounds like you learned a lot and made some new friends.
You should invest in a power pole, a trolling motor and/or a kayak with a paddle system. Just from my observations, these would have made your fishing a whole lot easier! Hey, I really enjoy the content you put out. Good luck with your future tournaments. 🎣🤠
I was wondering if your competitor's are using the same type floating device's, or canoe's,like your own? John, that was an epic fishery, and you did a great job. You now have more knowledge going into next years tournament. God Bless and GO KATS!!!!!
I love smallmouth fishing the best smallmouth fishing I have ever seen
Need to try fishing Swatara creek in Pa.with your kayak, easier to fish for smallmouth.
