Demanitus hid it in invisible ink on the back of a scroll that contained all known information about the sundrop and moonstone. Maximus is eight years old in Tangled. Which for a horse is about the equivalent of a human's mid-30s. The Captain actually retired about two and a half years after Rapunzel's return, due to what he felt was a conflict of interest between his duty and his daughter. The replacement he personally recommended? Prince Eugene Horace Fitzherbert.
